Bills Hire Ryan Nielsen Senior Defensive Assistant.
MikePJ76 replied to BuffaloBillyG's topic in The Stadium Wall
you are talking about a single play or single formation. I was pointing out scheme. Anyone can run the same blitzes. Teams copy each other every week. Without the better players you can not have the same success. and again, if Cooper doesn't slip he is off to the races and spagnuolo's zero blitz gets wiped out. Maybe the bills win maybe they don't. It happens. Chiefs fans would have been screaming about the play and why did they gamble so big if they lost. But It doesn't matter, Cooper slipped and was caught from behind because of it so its another check mark for spagnuolo. The bills could have run the exact plays in the same situations and because of the personnel differences had completely different results to which I guarantee 90% of this place would be flipping out that they gave up a big play and gambled. -
I want them to draft better defensive players. I am sick of the same guys being injured every year and at critical times. I am most sick of the team having almost no ability to get to the quarterback while rushing four in these big games. Its feast or famine. Some weeks they look unblockable and other times, usually in the postseason they are on their heels and getting dictated to. I personally do not think its a matter of dialing up better blitzes. If that was the case the Ryan brothers would have the success spagnuolo has had. I mean the Giants and Bears blitzed a ton this year and they were not very good. Maybe the bigger issue is as you said Mcdermott and his philosophy, after all Andy Reid had two guys on his eagles staff that worked under Jim Johnson. One he fired for postseason failure and the other he rehired as DC and has a bunch of rings because of it. The Bills hired the former.

well because his name came up in this thread already, Spagnuolo was a disaster in St.louis and seems to be fine in KC. He is a defensive line coach at heart. He has helped/coached/ been a part of some good groups in his stops in atlanta and new orleans. He is here to help coach the Defensive line. also, Mcdermott and or beane seem to really like what payton did with his staff in new orleans since a number of them keep ending up here. So maybe there is something specific that Nielsen does well with lineman that Beane/mcdermott like and want him to coach here as senior defenisve assistant. Or maybe he just missed getting up in the morning and not being around someone named Josh Allen. Anything is possible -

that isn't a way to judge a coach honestly. especially when he has not been hired to be the defensive coordinator. -

is this a serious post? You think that is grounds for firing a Defensive coordinator in his second year? -
I understand your point of view, I really do and I am all for an aggressive defense and actually prefer to the general style mcdermott brought here. However. If you watch this team every week you will, well maybe you won't but I will and did get the sense that they play a certain way to mitigate risk because they can not succeed doing those things regularly. They don't have the horses for that race. I mean when Von Miller and Groot just keep giving up the edge 1 second after the ball is snapped while playing man I would say that is a bigger issue than taking risks. Maybe those guys should not have been just leaving the edge completely open seemingly every other down throughout the game. Von Miller spinning into nothing and leaving a gap is about as bad a play as the defense can make. That's not scheme, that is on the player. If the Bills ran an aggressive blitz heavy defense and in the process start giving up as many big plays as they make people would be losing their mind because guys got left on an island to cover insert wr here. There are two sides to this pancake. and again, Improve the personnel and you improve the defense. The scheme will be secondary when we have legitimate pass rushers and other players who have to be schemed for. Not a single player on the Bills defense creates a situation where the other offense has to scheme to stop him. So KC for instance can run blitzes overloaded to one side, zero pressures with 7 or 8 guys coming right up the middle because they have great players on all 3 levels of defense that have to be accounted for. So when the line is looking to keep help with jones and trying to stay away from mcduffie the chiefs already have an advantage. The bills had Rapp and Benford out of the game and Von Miller running himself out of plays on every other snap. Its just simply not apples and oranges.

maybe he doesn't trust guys to get home? Did you watch hamlin and johnson blitz this year? I can see williams, benford and bernard but the other guys don't seem to get there. Did you want Rasul douglas blitzing in critical situations in that game? If Cooper doesn't slip on the third down play the Bills would have beat Spagnuolo's blitz and had the lead and mabye won the game. The Bills brought pressure this year more than any previous year I can remember. No matter what anyone tells me I believe it is personnel. Improve the personnel, improve the defense.

There are only a few defenses you can run in the real world. Its not as complicated as so many people make it seem. The Bills do not have an X's and O's problem. They have a Jimmy and Joe's problem. This offseason will hopefully take care of that for the most part. -
I guess the bills are sort of on the east coast.

no one who watches football does but the non football people do. There have been some great ones.

Anyone else for using our draft capital for trades?

Dane Brugler had a senior bowl report mentioning some guys that could be had in the 2nd round late first that I imagine will be on the Bills radar. Edge rusher: Mike Green, Marshall Anyone who follows my work knows how glowing my thoughts are on Green as a prospect. But — no bias here — he had the most flashes of a very flashy edge group in Mobile. That bull rush on Conerly got the most attention, but Green consistently made plays with bend, burst and violence. I chuckle whenever I see someone caught up on Green’s size instead of focusing on the ways he wins. He is an easy first-round grade. The question is: How high will he go? My three highest-ranked edge rushers in Mobile — Green, Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart and Boston College’s Donovan Ezeiruaku — all performed well. UCLA’s Femi Oladejo also deserves mention for looking, and then playing, the part. He is a stock-up prospect. Defensive tackle: Darius Alexander, Toledo This year’s defensive line class is loaded, and it includes several likely early-rounders who were in Mobile: Ole Miss’ Walter Nolen, Kentucky’s Deone Walker and South Carolina’s T.J. Sanders. But it was Alexander who had the most consistently impressive week. It didn’t matter whether he lined up on the edge, over the B-gap or as a nose, he won with fluid body control and strong hands, using a club-rip on one rep and then a firm bull rush the next play. Defensive linemen that are 6-3 5/8, 304 with 33-inch arms and this type of talent rarely fall out of the top 100 — and I’ll bet Alexander doesn’t, either. Cornerback: Quincy Riley, Louisville One-on-one drills are such a tough ask for cornerbacks — there’s no pass rush, no hook or post defender; there’s only green grass for the receiver. Yet, I was consistently impressed with this cornerback group in Mobile, especially Riley. The Louisville product consistently stayed in phase with receivers and did a great job turning his head or reading the eyes of the receiver to make plays on the ball. Another aspect of Riley’s week that was impressive was the way he coached up the other corners. When a player such as Darien Porter returned to the huddle, Riley pointed out different leverages and route tells to help him on his next rep. Riley’s combination of experience and quick-reaction skills will serve him well in the NFL. Others who impressed: Western Kentucky’s Upton Stout, who’s small (5-8 1/4, 178) but stayed attached to receivers all week and made it difficult to complete passes; Florida State’s Azareye’h Thomas, who was already in the top-50 mix but made a case for the first round; UCF’s Mac McWilliams, a late addition to the Senior Bowl roster who left no doubt he belonged because of the way he covered during drills. -

Carter is a 3 tech like Oliver and is olivers backup and hopefully he gets to the point where he can play next to Ed in pass rushing situations. He has nothing to do with replacing Jones or playing the 1 tech spot. Taylor Rapp has missed both chiefs playoff games and missed the steelers playoff game last year too. If I ran the bills I would be looking to upgrade the position this offseason and move Rapp back to the third guy, the dime defense guy ish. Bishop will take hamlins spot. They need to find a Corner, a starting safety for Rapp's spot and two defensive lineman this offseason.j Garrett is a nice dream scenario but it's not going to happen. This is a draft filled with good defensive players. They need to nail this draft and rebuild the defense with more talent, affordable young talent. This would allow them to push the cap a little at wr where they should just sign a vet who can play day one. For me, I'm signing Ty Johnson, Mack Hollins, Gilliam back to the team on day one. Then I am signing Darius Slayton. The draft will be about building a new defense, hopefully with more talent and speed. If a WR who is an x that can make a difference falls to them in the first or second round that is fine but the premium picks need to be used on defense. A young drafted defense that is all signed for a few years allows you in the next two years to resign or extend the talent we have on offense, Cook, torrence, mcgovern etc. -
Important to note Coleman had a serious wrist injury and Kincaid played the last 8 weeks plus playoffs on a torn pcl.
-
Hello Darius Slayton. He is a perfect fit. I hoped all summer they would trade for him. I hoped during the season they would trade for him. Then they traded for Cooper. Slayton is explosive, 6"1 199 lbs, great locker room guy and desperate to be on a winner. He won't break the bank like Higgins. He is perfect for Buffalo.
-
No thanks on Cooper. If they resign him they better be resigning him in line with his production level. They should find a more dynamic player outside to go with what they have and I am hoping they resign hollins. I hope they do it in free agency. Personally, and I banged this drum all summer and september, I would kick the tires on Darius Slayton. He is an explosive outside WR, A great teammate and locker room guy and he is desperate to be on a winnner. He could bring the tools this team needs to make some more downfield plays in these big games they are missing. He should not break the bank like Higgins. They are similar in size, Higgins is a little taller. Slayton can be more explosive imo. So that's my free agent wr guy. Darius Slayton. Sign him for 3 or 4 years and backload all the money to the final two years etc. Then go all in on defense.

Going to go buy a couple of new 4k movies and spend the day with them sunday or just play the guitar all day. I refuse to watch Andy Reid. I hate him and absolutely am not interested in watching them to be the first team to 3 peat. This is just awful.
-
absolutely no way you trade for that contract. He is a guy you wait to get cut and then give him a reasonable 2 year deal.
-
They should give him a barrel and push him out in the falls. or you know whatever way they feel is appropriate to just make him go away.
-
Cooper Kupp may get cut. He is not perfect but he would probably produce a lot more than amari cooper did. he gets hurt a lot though. i agree with you though. Go plug in a vet wr and resign hollins. Then build a better defense through the draft.

Great Job GunnerBill. Count me in on all the defensive lineman we can get. Dane Brugler had Kenneth Grant going 32 to KC in his first mock. If He fell to Buffalo they would surely take him right? Also my friends son is on the Oregon staff. I will ask her to ask him about derrick harmon and see what feedback I get.
