10/6/2024 - Bills at Texans 1st half game thread.
PBF81 replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well, first of all, none of the teams that we played the first three weeks are any good, none will post winning records. Secondly, over the first three weeks we had the best starting field position in the league, and about 8 yards better, per drive, than the season leader will be by the end of the year. Since then we have yet to generate a drive longer than 40 yards other than the one we got on a broken play resulting in that deep pass to Shakir last week. It's Brady and his schemes. It appears that this is already becoming clear. -

With this offensive fish-out-of-water scheme? Good luck. -

Reminds me of the time at a hockey game in Rochester where the announcer broadcasts that each member of the winning team receives a case of Genesee Cream Ale, and someone instantly stands up and belts out, and each member of the losing team receives two cases. -

And for as true as that is, he got five times luckier with Allen. -

He's reflecting on his "winning culture" and cheerleading. (Clapping) That helps keep that winning culture going. -
Concerned that Joe Brady may have crashed back to reality.

FYI, we had four drives in the 2nd half, unless we count the last two that we cashed in with Trubisky and to run out the clock to end the game. The first one only resulted in a TD because of that broken play with the 52-yard pass to Shakir. Otherwise that's a 3-and-out. The next drive we had that long play on the left deep to Coleman, but that was one of the few plays where WRs went deep. After that not much on 5 plays for 9 yards otherwise, that was the drive with that ridiculous trick play, but if our adjustments were working, why the trick play. He was obviously out of ideas. On the third drive of the second half, we had those two deep plays to Coleman on the same route he ran the first time, and to Kincaid, but after that 5 plays for -6 yards. That was the MFG. Those three deep plays were half of our net yards in the 2nd half, the rest of the half wasn't good. That's not really successful adjusting. In fact, those were close to the only deep plays we ran on the game. Most of Allen's attemps were short-medium passes. That's what our head coach wants. -
But that's the way that McD wanted it so that there wasn't anyone demanding to get the ball. Now they've got it. It will be interesting to see what Brady does, how he did last season with the offense was highly overrated, and now that teams have the template to stop us courtesy of Harbaugh, again, it will be interesting. But again, he's also had the luxury of no video being made available, which is increasingly no longer the case. That is the big question, but the teams that don't have the personnel aren't the ones that will be around in January anyway, so it doesn't matter if they can't stop us, it's whether the ones that do can. We'll see, but there's plenty of reason for concern. I don't even come close to having any faith in Brady's adjusting, particularly with his boss breathing down his neck to have things that way that his ignorant viewpoint perceives how they should be. Correct, but does that play to Josh's strengths, namely great arm strength and improv rushing? No. Well, LOL, we didn't have to do much adjusting in weeks 1-3 facing teams none of which will even post a winning record. Again, that's not what matters. But in the Arizona game Brady didn't adjust. We were down 17-3 and trying to do what they said, namely run the ball, but then Josh took over doing just about everything. Our RBs contributed just 36 rushing yards on 15 carries, or 2.4 yards-per-carry after that. It wasn't adjusting, it was Josh having had enough but it's not any part of our plan. Houston's not a team that should be unbeatable, even with our injuries. And if they want an "everyone eats" spread short passing game, you don't need blinding speed to accomplish that by the WRs. IMO it's a flawed system given the personnel we have. Our RBs are averaging fewer than 4 yards-per-carry as a whole.

I hear ya, but keep in mind that we're supposed to be "spreading the ball out" this season, aka no need for a bona fide #1. That's the actual plan, not some mistake, and the point is that they have enough decent bodies to make it work. Kincaid's underutilized too, and you didn't mention Hollins and MVS, both of whom were were told are quite capable WRs. It's not as if we're "stretching the field," in fact, we're doing the opposite. As to the blowouts, we had three even worse blowouts last season at this time and we see what happened. As more film comes out on the offense, we could be in trouble.

Samuel's the highest paid WR on the team, how about putting him to use. What happened to Knox, why can't he play? Samuel has 9 targets so far, MVS 6, Knox 5. What happened to the genius "everyone eats" strategy of spreading the ball around and not needing, or wanting, a #1 WR. Seemed all the rage a week ago. For a team that's averaged a mere 25 passes/game and had stated that it's offensive basis is running the ball and short passing, why is this a problem.

I'm really starting to love this WR room. We quietly got better

Your leapfrogging. Bernard stepped big-time too. Those arguing this can't have it both ways. -

Always an explanation. It also gained a couple of LBs that stepped up. 2022: 5th in YPG, 14th in YPC 2023: `5th in YPG, 28th in YPC -

LOL You've gotta love how the personally directed stuff starts with simple nonspecifically directed factual observations. What I said was that our run D would get worse, which it did, significantly. Granted, it didn't seem to be much of an issue. But since you're brought it up, isn't it also funny how McD claims that our offense needs to be more run heavy and that's how games are won, but on the defensive side he does the opposite? Again, if those are the only two options, ... could be you, or the people suggesting that. BTW, those types of arguments are akin to playground tantrum of young children. What's even more hilarious is the one's going overboard in the fall and at season's end will be those thinking that Coleman's going to have some kind of monster rookie season, that Davis is going to do much more than Singletary or Moss ever did. How Samuel's going to replicate his best of his seven seasons. etc. Apparently then it's just fine to be over the top negative and pessimistic. LOL Honestly, forums are the best little microcosms of human nature. -

Ya know, I feel very sorry for people that only see two options in contexts like this. Homerism vs. misery/negativity. It actually explains a lot about the world we live in. -

They say this crap every year. Look at how much Allen was in love with Dorsey. And at all the positive hype about Sheffield is ast year. Allen's said similar things about other players that never worked out. It's good press. Why say anything negative, why not be overly positive. It's free. We need an OC that knows how to get the most out of Allen and the offense, not one that kowtows to him and let's him dictate much of the offense. Allen's being besties with them all isn't as important. Unfortunately we'll never have such an OC as long as McD is here. Then everyone will be puzzled and perplexed when these lofty statements don't come to pass. The homerism is a little out of control right now, but that's normal for this time of year. 😏 -

He's to busy processing what Rivera told him. No time.

James Cook has less touches than Ray Davis over past 5 seasons
PBF81 replied to freddyjj's topic in The Stadium Wall
We'll see, but if that's true, then Davis should fare much better than Singletary or Moss. As to Harris, your teaching there. In the games he played he averaged 4.1 ypc and 4 carries a game for about 16 yards. At the end of the day the elephant on the kitchen table is the fact that our rushing increased under Brady only because of Allen doubling his carries and rushing yardage. ... While reducing his passing production. If that's wise then we may be in for a helluva year. -
You said this ... he had a below average starting QB and went 9-7. The clear implication of the discussion at hand is that he's done more than his predecessors, at QB or otherwise. Clearly he got less from Taylor than Ryan did. Ryan also didn't have his extremely favorable circumstances, including an incredibly unlikely 4th down completion having zero to do with him or his team. Well, the point that you miss entirely with that comment is that poor teams sometimes make the playoffs and records are often driven by SOS or SoW (wins).
