Yes, and yeah, I've never gotten it either. And for someone like that, a "defensive minded HC" to continually choke in the big games in the playoffs, it's even more perplexing. Also, I get it too, we're always high on our draft picks, but many analysts had Williams going on day 3. By almost every account he's more of a S than a LB at the NFL level. He's a role-player to be sure, there's no way he sizes up in the Middle in the NFL. My best guess is that McD has some special use for him in mind. I wish we'd run a traditional 4-3 and find some guys that are capable of taking 70% snap counts on the DL and LB. This entire rotational approach needs to go. Just my two cents. I suppose one could argue the talent part, but keep in mind, he had Kuechly, one of the league's best, then players like Addison in his prime who was actually playing well then, and players that logged sacks that we simply haven't gotten here. IMO better talent, even if only somewhat. But anytime you have a MLB like Kuechly ... Yeah, sorry, but we'll see what happens this year.

I'm not sure I'd consider any RB currently on their roster to be above-average. I guess it depends upon how "above-average" is defined, Mostert did OK but hardly great in his first year of starting, but he's also old for a RB. Who knows about Achane, but until he proves himself at the NFL level. I'd probably keep him over either Mostert or Gaskin, but if I'm them and can add Cook, who also catches well, IMO that's a significant upgrade, and he's unquestionably a 3-down RB. We don't even have that.

Yeah, I don't either. Here's my take on McD taking over. He's said something about a more attacking defense which Frasier apparently didn't have. Not sure I believe that, but that's moot at this point. McD's D in Carolina, where he had some very good talent, arguably more than we have here, and Kuechly at MLB, is Ds ranked perfectly average 15th/16th in his six seasons there in pass D. His run Ds about the same, perhaps marginally better.

IDK, Hill, Waddle, and then Cook if they add him? Coupled with our inability to defend the run against even mediocre RBs at times ... Sounds like something to be concerned about to me, particularly since neither draftee Williams nor newly acquired Floyd have as their specialty Run D. I guess I'd rather have him on the Fins than the Jets tho.

That depends upon how we lose those additional games. If we continue to get outcoached against the better teams, particularly in the playoffs, and after all of the offseason moves, then it cannot possibly be defined as success. Presumably you agree. If we go to the playoffs and advance to the AFC CG and lose to a team that simply outplayed us despite our having put up a fantastic game otherwise, then yes. But if we continue to play poorly against lower seeds and get outclassed and cannot advance past the Divisional Round again, then it would be a difficult argument to suggest that we've improved or to define an otherwise underachieving season as having been successful. Or if we lose a bunch of games due to allowing near 200 rushing yards for example. In three of our losses last season, 2 in the regular season, we allowed an average of 164 rushing yards. Cook was the only above-average RB we faced in those three games. With more talent is more expected, both in terms of record as well as playoff performance. We have one of the most talented teams in the league, even if only because of Allen. I envision no scenario for claiming "success" if we cannot win the division or if we get bounced from the playoffs in the WC or D round again. There is no good reason why we should be anything less than a #2 Seed if we're not underachieving.

I think you have to expand that analysis. Of the past five drafts, prior to this one, Beane's drafted 9 players. Of those 9 players in rounds 1 & 2. Of those 9 players 4 were DL, 5 were Front-7, and 6 were D overall. The offensive players taken were Allen of course, Ford, and Cook. This is the first year that his Draft was focused on offense. As Cowherd said, and which otherwise is know, rookie TEs rarely make an impact. We'll see how this Draft plays out this year, but at least it was offensively focused. Colin saying the quiet part out loud. LOL I see that it threw a Baby Ruth into the forum pool.

Or bringing guys like Kelvin Benjamin, Lotulelei, Mario Addison, Vernon Butler, Daryl Williams, Andre Smith, and Efe Obada all here from McD's familiarity with them at Carolina knowing what motivated them? Some of those not so inexpensively either. Which do you think is more likely? Since you brought it up that is.

It's the guaranteed money. The perspective on that is mindboggling. Maybe not the overall contract value, again, if he continues to improve, but that $45M in Guaranteed is huge for him and what he brings. It's also going to set a standard on the team, at least to some extent.

Whether you're perplexed or not it's a lot more than it typically would be for a player of Oliver's caliber. It signals that something else is up. That's all I'm saying. I also don't think that the Hopkins thing is a reach in the least. I'm not for it depending upon what we give up to sign him if it happens, but the fact that Beane's been recently talking to Hopkins personally, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't to plan out their extended family picnic.

Monday's when the league office reopens, that's when we'll have more detail on Oliver's contract, but also, if this was in fact done to accommodate Hopkins, one would assume that Beane had this worked out ahead of time instead of taking such a risk in mere hopes. I'm not a huge Beane fanboy, but surely he'd do that. Well, OK, just going by what's been reported, as in that piece posted this morning stating plainly that Beane's been interacting personally with Hopkins and that the primary reason why a deal hasn't been struck by now is because we can't fit it in. That $45M Guaranteed is perplexing. Only Allen, Diggs, Miller, and White got more, and Allen and Miller were on 6 year deals. Miller got only a few million more for two more years. They're all notably better at their positions than Oliver is. There's little argument there. He got then again nearly 70% more than Milano and Milano's twice the player at his position than Oliver is. About 50% more than Dawkins or Knox.
