He's good in pass-coverage. He's simply not well suited to being a LB on running plays. The fact that Beane picked him as a MLB is on Beane, it really shouldn't be on Bernard. Poor dude's out of position in the NFL. Bernard was a 3rd-5th round prospect on every board of the 10+ that I saw. Here's his NFL.com Draft Profile, which IMO is pretty much what we saw on Monday and in preseason. Bernard possesses elite intangibles and teams will be drawn to him because of it. He's resilient, productive and showed a willingness to play through pain. However, Bernard lacks the desired frame and play strength and will face scrutiny surrounding his injury history. He needs space to operate and has the speed for man-cover duties as a pro. If the medicals check out, he should be a Day 3 pick with sub-package value. I hear ya, but once it's obvious that isn't happening he really needs to take care to ensure that he doesn't further risk injury. I remember wondering whether he's going to get injured as that play unfolded, as no doubt did many. It was clear prior to that hurdle attempt that he wasn't going to get the 1st, there were too many defenders around. Especially with more defenders clearly there. But why is the question.

How do you know what my background is? Otherwise, as I added in edit, what are these expert sources that you've cited, what, Youtubers? LOL Again, from what I've seen absolutely none contradict what I've laid out. In fact, they focus on his role in pass defense/coverage. Which again, I have no argument with. So show me all of these expert sources, I'll see what their background is, and we can go from there. See, the difference between you and I in this exchange, is that I've provided info from several sources. That's fine, I'll favor the facts in the breakdown between rushing and passing D. We all make our choices. I do have a hunch however that your opinion will be changing significantly as the season goes along. BTW, who are those people and where's their work, besides "they said so"? Again, he was just fine in pass coverage. Nothing to be concerned about there whatsoever. He was not good in most other aspects. He was blown up on most run plays, made zero impact at the LOS, and made no solo tackles on RBs. In fact, I distinctly commented to one friend during the game that on one running play he looked like a log in the middle of a tsunami. He was involved in, secondarily, not primariy, three comb tackles on running plays by RBs that netted an average of 5 yards, 15 yards total. The primary tacklers on those plays were White, Oliver, and Jones. He was involved in a few at the end of the game while the Jets were merely posturing for FG positioning, which I did not count for what should be obvious reasons. He made one solo tackle on Zach Wilson on a scramble that gained 6 yards, and was in on another with Lawson as the primary on a Wilson 2-yard sneak on 4th-and-1 and Bernard with contact only well after Wilson had already crossed the 1D mark. All other tackles were on pass plays. Make whatever you want of it. We're clearly not going to agree, so no sense in contining this exchange.

I don't care how it's calculated, those are the facts. I'd be happy to go thru play by play. From what I've seen, which is extensive, he's good on pass plays in coverage, not so much in pass-rush, but sucks v. the run. Which is what we already knew about him. He'll be a liability on running plays all season.

I just went through all 11. 77 total yards. Lazard's 24 yard catch alone, who was his man, his botch, was 24. Anyway, that's 7 yards per.

Agree with your overall take. That is key however. It stands to reason that his "panic" let's just call it, stems from the patterned behavior of having to often scramble for to the ineffectiveness of the OL for five seasons. Also, few teams are going to bring it like the Jets did. He'll improve, the question is to what extent. This week will be interesting, the O will be under less pressure, the D more.

Did you go through the pbp to see where those tables were? Most of the short stops were his comb tackles, where frankly, of you review the game, you'll not that he was secondary on. Also, MLBs are all but categorically the top tacklers in the league. But I liked his play to that is DB tackles. When a CB leadsca team in tackles, it's typically not a good sign for what would be obvious reasons. TB's tackles were more of that nature.

Kirksey is little more than Klein 2.0. I wouldn't get too excited.

In fairness to Allen, if it's a lack of preparation then coaching is implicated as well. And to me that's been a no-brainier since there's been a consistent lack of prep in other areas also, particularly in the playoffs. As far as the confusion and panic go, while other teams with top QBs have gone out of their ways to put solid OLs in front of them, McBeane have neglected that in favor of choosing to be obsessed with the pass rush and have all but ignored that until this season. Had they done that, it would have helped Allen properly develop in that way. The Jets' pass rush is outstanding, but it OL finally did a halfway decent job on Monday. All five OL-men played 100% of the snaps and Torrence looked good. Brown was the only consistent issue but even he blocked well at times. That exposed Allen's issues as as such. But are those issues now a patterned behavior and response from five prior seasons of running for his life, we don't know. The problem is that that also doesn't completely explain his not taking advantage of the higher percentage outlet passes.

If he's ignoring things then that's one thing. If he's struggling with it, it's altogether another, and a more serious thing. Curious what the issue is. Reading D's has never been a strength of his. Maybe he's simply never picked it up completely.

Some of that is our staff not adjusting anywhere near to where our opponents do. Particularly the good coaches. It might also help to explain why Allen's numbers in the 1st halves of games are very good while in the 2nd halves of games they're incredibly average at best. Last season 24 of Allen's passing TDs were in the 1st halves of games. He had 11 in the 2nd halfs of games. His INTs were about the same despite having about 25% fewer passing yards in the 2nd halves of games. His 1st half rating average was 103.1, his 2nd half rating average was 89.5. His numbers yesterday by half: 1st Half: 17 of 21 (81.0%), 133 Passing Yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 89.1 Rating 2nd Half: 12 of 18 (66.67%), 103 Passing Yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 41.9 Rating While many here are loathe to accept it, in-game adjustments, which is an incredibly significant attribute of the best coaches in the league, is not something that McD is great at if even good at. IMO he's below average at it. But hey, "we have a winning culture." I wonder if we'd still have a winning culture if we went 10-7 or so. BTW, despite all of that, with a single exception, the only reason why we've won any playoff games is because Allen gets into a zone. McD would be 1-6 in the playoffs with this team if it weren't for Allen. ... Actually, we'd be 0-6 since one of those games got us to the one we won with a mere 17-point offensive effort. We never would have gotten past that game that got us to that one.

Agreed, you're preaching to the choir there. It seems that McD lacks whatever it is across the board however, even with is coaches. I can't say for sure, but it seems that he's more intent on having a happy little team (players and coaches) community, than doing what's critical in the interests of winning, particularly in the biggest of games. That would explain why we have no trouble getting [emotionally] up for a key game here and there during the season, but in the playoffs and when going up against better coaches, we typically struggle.

We'll, you're asking the wrong person, I'm of the mind that one of McD's major coaching flaws is that he's not a good disciplinarian. He's to much of a "players coach.".

Age 27, sixth season in the league, presumably this talk happened at some point well before now. If not, then coaching has to be quite seriously questioned.

Perhaps I heard incorrectly, but a number of years ago I read that his parents owned the land that he developed. It's easy to get a loan to develop something concrete. Try starting a business with no collateral and needing loans. HINT: Good Luck That may be incorrect, but that's what I read somewhere. It's not all that important. Point is that many wealthy people started with mom & dad's money or assets.

BTW, other than for generalities, we know that McD isn't going to say anything specifically to implicate himself in any of the team's most significant faults.

That's the way I see it too. Milano was actually the MLB on that play in a clinically traditional 4-3 alignment. I'd question why on 1st-and-10 they were so concerned about a run UTM. The other puzzling thing is that the DL converges on the middle, again, on 1st-and-10, not 3rd-and-1 or 2. Bernard, who's lined up in the SLB spot, makes a beeline for the Center of the OL. Why? That's beyond well-covered. Where there's no presence, besides as you mentioned, namely White, a CB, is on the edge, where Hall makes his break between White, who whiffs entirely, and that edge, and gone. And if it was White that was supposed to set that edge, well, then he simply whiffed. McD's comment may be a way of deflecting criticism of his choice for starting LB this season, whether it be SLB or MLB regardless.

If things are that wrong so often then it raises other questions re: the DC.

No disagreement here except that it's not Beane's job to get involved there. It is Dorsey and McD's job, and if Dorsey ain't doin' it, then McD's to "explain it" to Dorsey. It appears that either little of that is happening, which after last season would be inexplicable, or that Allen's ignoring it. Either way, it's not good.
