I saw his career stats and I agree with your expectations on his production. It's too bad Shorter went to IR because I think he could have been a useful weapon and maybe jumped ahead of Sherfield.
-
I agree his body of work is not impressive but he put up decent numbers in a supporting role last year and I was hoping to see more of the same this year. So was last year an anomaly or do we just not know how to use him the way MIA was able to?
-
He's deadly out of the backfield and almost always open. Run play action, have him check block the end and drift out - almost always there.
-
What's laughable is that nobody expects them to be pro bowl or HOFamers - just solid players with skills that can be utilized more effectively. When you draw up crappy routes, it's hard to take advantage of your talent.
-
Separation is also based on scheming and route design.
-
Cook out of the backfield is open a ton of times. They should run more designed plays for him but they need to scheme it out by having Josh pump fake, freeze the LBs, and then drop it to Cook. Also that long pass play to Harty could have worked if Josh had thrown more to the center of the field and let Harty chase it to that side. The corner was on the outside of Harty and would have had a hard time disrupting the play as there was no safety support in the middle. It's easy to say he should have done this or that. The Bills have the talent but they are just not drawing up plays that creatively fool the defenses and Josh is missing a lot of open guys by locking into his first option.

Houston found Bobby Slowik. There are experienced guys out there.

End of season game in Miami could very well be the make it or break game in terms of playoffs.
-
I called it a breakout year based on his previous career stats up to that point. I disagree with your point about mckenzie. Sherfield had identical rec yds as mck in 2022, but he avg. much better YPC.
-
I really thought these two guys would help strengthen our receiving corps talent, based on what they had done recently in NO and MIA. They both played meaningful roles in those offenses and served as as strong contributors. Harty had his breakout year in 2021 (he was hurt last year and saw limited action in 4 games), and no doubt we signed him based on his solid production in 2021. Besides being a solid return guy, in 2021 his receiving stats were: 36 rec 570 yds YPC - 15.8 longest - 72 yds The guy is quick and shifty and the Saints under Payton obviously found ways to utilize his speed and elusiveness. He was 2nd on the team in receiving yards. Sherfield had his breakout year in 2022. Behind Hill and Waddle, he was 3rd on the team in receiving yards: 30 rec 417 yds YPC - 13.9 longest - 75 yds So far in 2023, here's they stand: Harty: 13 rec 113 yds YPC - 8.7 longest - 43 yds Sherfield: 7 rec 53 yds YPC - 7.6 longest - 9 yds I know there are those who will say why do you want to throw more to these guys when you have Diggs/Davis/Kincaid. Well Miami last year, found a way to use Sherfield even though Hill had 119 rec. and Waddle had 75 rec., and Sherfield was gaining 14 YPC. Harty played on a team in 2021 that had a very mediocre receiving corps (no Michael Thomas that year) so he was asked to play a larger. What really stands out to me is the YPC under the current Bills offense. That may be based on the fact that they have been targeted on check downs more this year than in years past, but I also think it's a clear reflection of the short pass Dorsey scheme. I think under a more dynamic offense, both of these guys could contribute more. Why sign guys like these if you don't plan to work them into the offense - just to use them as decoys?

Houston and Buffalo Offenses Versus Tampa Bay

Settle down CincyBillsFan. There was no “transitive property” intended. It’s a simple comparison - you draw your own conclusions. -
So C.J. Stroud had a career day against the same team we played last week and I thought I would do a quick check of the offensive stats to see how we compared, particularly given that Stroud is a rookie versus the veteran Allen. Houston Stroud: 30/42 470 yds 15.6 YPC (top 4 receivers) Longest Catch Noah Brown: 6 - 153 yds 75 yds Dalton Schultz: 10 - 130 yds 26 yds Tank Dell: 6 - 114 yds 29 yds Nico Collins: 3 - 54 yds 23 yds. Total for top 4: 25 - 451 yds Buffalo Allen: 31/40 324 yds 10.4 YPC (top 4 receivers) Longest Catch Shakir: 6 - 92yds 30 yds Davis: 9 - 87 yds 16 yds Diggs: 9 -70 yds 17 yds Kincaid: 5 -65 yds 22 yds Total for top 4: 29 - 314 yds Houston was sure able to move the ball down the field and was much more explosive than we were. Nico Collins is probably their best receiver based on YTD and career stats, and he came in 4th in receiving yds. Their TE Schultz has had some very good years with Dallas, Tank Dell is a rookie, and Noah Brown hasn't really shown much throughout his career. Is their receiving corps really that much more explosive than ours? Stroud was sacked 3 times versus Allen's 2 - don't have stats on the number of pressures. I think this sort of comparison underlines exactly what we see week in and week out - we don't have an explosive offense or an offense that can put up game changing chunk plays and/or move the ball down the field with big pass plays. Here we have a rookie quarterback and a decent but not elite receiving corps light up the same team we played last week and seemed to move the ball at will. Houston scored 29 points of their 39 in the second half alone, including 17 in the 4th qtr. We scored 7 points of our 24 in the second half, and 0 points in the 4th qtr. Sure, every week is different, I get that, but TB is the same team that we played and we are supposed to be the team that wins our division with a potential MVP candidate quarterback. Trust the process? The process is broken. I think it starts with the entire offensive scheme we are trying to run that is far too predictable and absent creative and big play making capabilities. I might be in the minority but I actually think we have the talent to do what Houston did to TB but I don't see it happening anytime soon unless some significant changes are made to our offensive coaching leadership. We need to whatever we can to bring in the most experienced offensive coordinator we can find/steal - someone who has a track record and most of all "experience". The Dorsey experiment has to go.

He looks pretty damn good.

The Ripoff Report: The Good, the Bad and the Irritating
Dubie54 replied to WhitewalkerInPhilly's topic in The Stadium Wall
It seems to me we blitzed less than we did in NE and covered the middle of the field a lot better. The downside was that Baker had time to throw. We did a great job on Evans (at least based on his stats) and I don't know why he wasn't targeted more. A few of the replays showed Benford doing a great job on him so maybe that was the reason for not trying to get him the ball more. Taron Johnson holds virtually every play when the TE runs a crossing route. Who the hell is going to cover Kelsey? -
Our return game needs work.
-
What a waste of a play.
-
We have rhythm when we move it around
-
Talked about the shotgun run at the goal line and calling a roll out pass for Josh just after he came out of the tent that led to the interception as two examples of what Bills fans are frustrated about. Clearly he was questioning Dorsey.
-
He was called Baker Mayfeel.
-
We miss his speed - sure he overplays at times but the dude can cover the field.
-
Kincaid!!
-
Teams know Allen likes to roll to that side of the ball so it’s a smart blitz.
-
Backers slow to react.
