Immigration Is Good For America
Joe Ferguson forever replied to Trump_is_Mentally_fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
· MAGA is taking a page from Democrats on how to lose elections while feeling good about themselves. Neera Tanden @neeratanden I am an Indian American who was born here and it's crystal clear that the Democratic Party sees me as American and a large part of the base of the Republican Party does not. I hope Indian Americans remember this moment at the next election. They don't see you as one of them. And… Elon Musk @elonmusk Yes. And those contemptible fools must be removed from the Republican Party, root and stem. He should have said this before the election. But the truth would never win for MAGA. -

"I agree with @elonmusk and @VivekGRamaswamy about H-1B visas. But I love the rebellion against them because it shows that MAGA is thinking for itself." No, MAGA is thinking about themselves. They know they can't compete with the global best and brightest. So they want to exclude them. Trouble is, you need the best players to win the long game. MAGAs are not them. -

Ramaswamy says "deplorable" without actually saying it: “The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over ‘native’ Americans isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit,” he wrote. “A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. “Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long. That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG. “A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers. ‘Normalcy’ doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our asses handed to us by China.” Cue knee jerk backlash from the "working class" but he isn't wrong. -

Et tu Britannia? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/dec/27/centre-right-extremism-the-west-moderates-populist None of this is to be sentimental about the old centre right, which from the 1980s onwards increasingly offered sink-or-swim economics and military adventurism. It is to recognise that democratic norms are no longer in fashion, and the consensus over what is “too extreme” has collapsed. On each side of the Atlantic, mainstream rightwingers – in politics and media – embrace positions they would previously have resisted. From naked bigotry to disinformation to treating opponents as dangerous national threats, the trend is clear. Where will it end? Here, there is no obvious answer, because the borders of the mainstream right are no longer policed. The tragic truth is that the western world may only get this out of its system when confronted with the consequences of such an ideology. A grim reckoning awaits us. -
agree. the rest is "fanciful". Here's a nice read on the possible implications of this bill. He's not getting a blank check. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/12/21/donald-trump-warned-republican-rebels-deportation-plan/ maybe it's just me, but the measures removed from the billl seemed pretty helpful to the middle class: The final funding bill removed more than 1,000 pages of policy when Mr Trump and Elon Musk, his close ally and Tesla billionaire, came out against the deal. Among the scrapped measures were restrictions on US investments in China, policy aimed at lowering prescription drug prices and rules clamping down on deceptive advertising of tickets for events, according to Politico.

for the record and to save the mods time, I wrote this on 12/18: 9/11 was horrible, no denying it. But in regards to our country, 1/6 was worse. We are watching the disintegration of a great nation at the hands of barbarians. This was a flash point. History has seen this play before in Rome...now care to opine on the contention that the whole thing was staged? That doesn't offend your sensibilities? partisan indeed... it's not a rare sentiment, at least among people I hang with.
-
you went to the principal? wow, I'm quaking. I said I thought 1/6 was more damaging than 9/11 for the future of the country. I also said that 9/11 was terrible. so F off. Juvenile and pedantic indeed. A supposed "Doc" should know the difference between flu and flue. But that's who most of you MAGAs are.

It seems we share something: a fondness for talking heads. It dates you. Saw them in 1979 in a college gym with 500 others. Had never heard of them. Fan ever since. it’s great that the bill was passed but things are not and will not be the same. I thought most MAGAs voted explicitly for change. They’re going to get it. Trump wanted a shutdown. He’s going to get what he wants more often than not.
-
Way to miss the point: the more things change, the more things stay the same.

You mean like the “investor class?” Trump sure has us investors by the short and curlies. And the plebs are going to make out like bandits! And who are state leaches? You mean people cashing in on government aid programs? More MAGAs doing that than Ds. Look at the election demographics…

What a load of crap. There was abundant coordination. It’s well documented but you choose to ignore it. Telling that you call the fake electors scheme a conspiracy. Yet you support a man who engaged in a conspiracy against his own country and therefore his own people. How do you rationalize that? Flue is what you open in a fireplace btw

your hope and $2.19 will get you a cup of coffee at McDonalds. He's already signaled his priorities and you are not one.

Far right billionaires are great. It's only progressive billionaires that are a problem...
