Terrel Bernard in question for the start of the Playoffs ???
518Buffalo replied to SCBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Like Tremaine Edmunds -
Kinda feel bad for Jonathan, seems like he might have been screwed out of a roster spot over Toohill with that rule incentivizing placing him on the PS. Joe Marino was saying that not only does the IPP rule allow the Bills to keep him for free on the PS, but he can't be poached unless he gets elevated more than 3 times I believe. But what a great move by Beane being able to keep both Toohill and Jonathan around while not even using a PS spot to do it. Makes way more sense why they kept Toohill now
-
Feels like our OL and DB have successfully developed players from the PS to be rosterable if not contributing players lately. Have to think these players see that and wouldn't be surprised to see them make the 53 next year if they don't get poached this year. I'm very happy to have them back in house!

Who do the Bills want to bring back to the PS?
518Buffalo replied to GASabresIUFan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Hardy for sure, though I can't imagine he gets through waivers. Outside of Hardy - Of the young guys: Shavers, Te'Cory Couch, Gore, Anthony Brown, Gouraige, Bills Of the vets: Jonathan, DeShaun Williams, Clapp, Hamler, Davidson or McKitty -
The odds are certainly against them, but the Bills have proven every year that guys on the PS get an opportunity. I wouldn't be surprised if Shavers and Shorter (and maybe X Johnson), assuming they make it back on the PS, have first dibs on competing for the Mack Hollins role next year with Mack on a 1 year deal

Marquez Valdes-Scantling meeting with the Bills (UPDATE: Signed)
518Buffalo replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
Don't see a reason to hate this move. The way I see it, we needed a speed guy and he'll complete with Claypool/Hamler/Isabella to be that guy as WR5 (with Cephus/Shorter/Shavers competing to be the big special teams WR6). I was hoping to find that guy on day 3 in the draft, but that guy wouldn't be any better than MVS this year and with it being a 1 year deal presumably that means we go WR again in the 2025 draft. We weren't finding a game changer at this point so adding more competition for WR depth with a down the field speed guy seems fine to me -
Draft Analysis - We're All Debi from Depew
518Buffalo replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall
My hot take is that while professionals have far more information and knowledge than fans, and while having more information is better in a vacuum, it can also lead to poor decision making if a GM over indexes on information that doesn't matter. What analytics does is it reduces the player down to a handful of data points that are known to be somewhat predictive of NFL success. Analytics doesn't model the player holistically, so it misses some context behind the numbers and also who the player is as a person. But if say a player is an excellent human being and wows the staff in person, they might let that information cloud any statistical red flags that us dumb fans wouldn't ignore. That's basically what I'm worried about with Coleman - though of course that's what we were worried about with Josh Allen and it turned out that the Bills staff nailed their assessment of him. That said, I do obviously trust Brandon Beane, and I would never claim that my uninformed opinion is better. But GMs get it wrong all the time and a lot of the time it's the surface level stuff that fans see that makes it obvious in hindsight -
Bills apparently cockblocked the Pats*** at the end of the 1st round…
518Buffalo replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall
If the Bills wanted Legette or Coleman they could move down one spot and definitely get one of them. If they knew the Pats wanted those guys too and Legette was Carolina's guy then they could have moved back 2 spots and been out of luck. Also possible Beane went to Carolina and said "hey New England is giving us X to move up, if you can beat that offer we'll swap picks so you can get your guy" which honestly makes more sense from Carolina's perspective why they gave up a relatively high amount to trade up one spot.- 84 replies

Who leads the team in receiving in 2024? (Most yards)
518Buffalo replied to Process's topic in The Stadium Wall
Been thinking over the last few days...what if Shakir just is that dude? Maybe we're all remembering how Gabe Davis struggled taking on a bigger role and are assuming Shakir can't do it either. But his efficiency was through the roof, it can go down quite a bit while still being great in bigger volume. Apparently he's working on his speed with Moulds this offseason. Idk, I wouldn't rule out that Shakir might just be awesome in a starting Z role -
Coleman reminds me of an NBA prospect that specializes in the midrange. No, those aren't the most efficient players (not my favorite prospects either) and you hope you have other guys on your team to generate efficient offenses. But when it comes down to it against the best defenses in high pressure situations you'd like to have someone that can get a bucket no matter what they throw at him. I'm not sure I see him being a guy who leads the team in catches or yards in the regular season, which is why I still think we need a WR1 - but it'll be good to have a guy like Coleman in the playoffs for when defenses are locked in and nobody is open, Josh can throw it his way and he can make a play.

Gave it a C. I can envision just about everyone drafted having a meaningful role while on their rookie contracts, but there's nobody I'm really excited about as a real potential impact player. I see Coleman's realistic upside as a good #2 (more reliable Gabe Davis). Bishop could be, but he doesn't play a premium position. Carter just gives me Harrison Phillips vibes - will be nice to have a solid rotational DT on a rookie deal but limited upside. Some of the day 3 picks I like and could have starter upside, or be nice special teamers. But after moving on from some of our aging all-pros, we need to find the next era of stars and none of these guys excite me in that way. Really this just hinges on Coleman because nobody expects a mid-later round player to be an all pro. I'm just not a huge fan of the pick

Rd 6, Pick 219: CB Daequan Hardy, Penn State
518Buffalo replied to section122's topic in The Stadium Wall
Taron might have been the next guy after Josh that I was most worried about getting hurt last year just with how valuable of a role he plays in our D and with only Cam Lewis as his backup. Getting a solid backup there, and a guy that can return kicks is a great pick. Does anyone know if he can play outside in a pinch? Think Ingram is our boundary CB4 but it would be nice to feel comfortable keeping him inactive on gamedays when everyone is healthy and using Lewis/Hardy in an emergency where both starters are hurt (which I feel like has happened several times over the past few years) -
Well I was definitely hoping this would be a guy with some speed. Disappointing that after the talk about getting "more explosive" we didn't make a significant investment on that front. I guess the WR room will be looking like: Shakir Samuel Coleman Hollins Hamler/Isabella Shorter/Shavers/Cephus I wish one of our 4-6 guys had some more developmental upside but that's probably fine, not much worse than any other team's 4-6. After getting basically nada from Sherfield and Hardy last year it could even be an upgrade. It's the top end talent that will be lacking in 2024, and that wasn't gonna be solved anyways unless we traded significant future assets which I'm glad we didn't do

Interesting. I'll admit my first thought was that a third OL pick on day 3 was confusing, unless they really wanted competition for Van Demark. But with how often our 7th rounders get scooped by other teams, if this is a guy that isn't coveted and can be lotto pick on the PS for a year with his ridiculous physical tools that's a fine use of that pick. Even better if he can do a Tea Time segment on social media like Christian Wade did

518Buffalo replied to section122's topic in The Stadium Wall
Sounds good to me. Could be Taron's primary backup (and candidate for successor, if all goes well?) if Cam is focused on S this year. Still need a 4th boundary corner but I think they like Ingram -
I think most people here would say WR1

For those that don’t like the Coleman pick
518Buffalo replied to whorlnut's topic in The Stadium Wall
Wasn't a fan of the pick but I'm warming up to Coleman as that bigger Gabe Davis with better hands comp that people have put out. We're focused on a Diggs replacement but we have to replace Davis too, and even though he was frustratingly inconsistent at times he provided a lot of value as a blocker and leader that does leave a void. Gabe Davis himself would be a decent 2nd round pick, a Gabe that doesn't drop critical passes is a good starter. I also respect the importance that Beane and McDermott put on character - I have to believe having good, hard working guys up and down the roster and having that culture permeate the building is a big reason why we've won 48 games over the past 4 years. So we won't replace Diggs this year, but that was always a tall order unless we went all in on a guy which I'm happy we didn't do. Add a speed guy with some Z upside today and I'll be satisfied with our weapons, acknowledging that we can upgrade more next year. But hopefully I'm wrong and he's the next Brandon Marshall! -
Exactly what I came here to say

Do You Like What Beane Did in the First Round?
518Buffalo replied to Gugny's topic in The Stadium Wall
I was generally in favor of a trade back before the draft began, and I liked the first trade to move down and get back in the 3rd round. From there I wish we had stayed put and drafted Legette, but I also feel pretty good about where we're at. I'm glad Beane didn't give away next year's draft to trade up -
I find myself largely agreeing with Joe Marino here, Legette at 32 would have been nice but if you told me before the draft we could move down 5 spots and get back in the 3rd round (and upgrade a day 3 pick) I would have taken it. If we wake up tomorrow with DeJean, Franklin and somebody else I'll be thrilled. I can get excited for Mitchell but I don't understand the McConkey love - maybe someone who watches more college football than I do can explain the appeal behind a guy with his mediocre production and good but not elite tools

Rumor: Bills trying aggressively to move up for a WR in round one
518Buffalo replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agree with this. As we come out of the Hyde/Poyer/White/Diggs/Davis/Morse era, the focus needs to be on maximizing the next 5 year window (where Josh will be 28-32) instead of maximizing just next year. Maybe that involves getting Odunze at all costs, but I'm firmly in the "don't reach/overpay for a WR" camp. Obviously we need WRs, but it's more important to hit on impact players now and in future drafts. Ideal draft for me would be trading back to pick up a 3rd (Rich Hill chart shows the LV's 44 and 77 as roughly equal to 28), getting WRs in the second round and day 3, then still having 2 day 2 picks plus the rest of our draft to shore up the rest of the roster -
Not saying it makes him worth his contract but I think Knox's leadership and locker room fit will be crucial this season with so many captains leaving. I could even see Dawson wearing a C next year. Also Joe Marino speculated that one reason Knox reworked his contract was to get less money but more security, partly yeah so he wouldn't get cut but also because he loves Buffalo. If that's the case then I doubt they'd do him dirty like that after he helped the team's cap situation As for his play on the field, well it seems like really leaning into 12 personnel and being creative with getting Knox looks will be important because he'll be one of the 5 or 6 best pass catchers on the team next year. I agree with OP that he's shown great powerful YAC ability so I do like the thought of using him creatively and getting him the ball in space

With the Diggs trade I definitely feel that a window has closed, but another one is opening. It's sad that we'll never have a SB with Hyde, Poyer, White, Diggs, Gabe and Morse - especially Hyde and Poyer, I wanted one for those guys so bad. But with the 2022 draft looking like a really good one, we have another young nucleus to look forward to, with a fully in his prime Josh Allen. Outside of Allen our next window with have a core of Oliver, Bernard, Rousseau, Benford, Kincaid, Shakir, Cook and Brown (with Dawkins and Milano still around), plus whoever we draft this year. Here's hoping that those guys can step up the way we expect them to both on the field and leadership wise, and Beane nails the draft this year. I certainly expect some kind of step back in 2024 (ofc with Josh Allen you're never out of it), but if we can land a few impact players in the draft we're set up really nicely from 2025 on.

How would you construct the 2024 Bills WR Room?
518Buffalo replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm firmly in the Packers model camp of adding WR talent through the draft. I would love to draft the best WR at 28 or even trade back into the 2nd, and then pick up another in the 4th to compete with Shorter for the last active roster spot. I wouldn't be opposed to Beane getting aggressive if there's a guy he really likes and he's only giving up one of our first or MIN 2nd next year, but with the roster retool we just went through the focus should be on maximizing Josh's 2nd window which to me means putting rookie-scale WRs around him. I think even without a true #1 next year, between Kincaid/Shakir/Samuel/Cook/rookie WR there is solid enough depth for Josh to work with if he can perform at the level we expect him to. I mean hell Mahomes just won 2 SBs without a top WR. Shakir Samuel 1st or 2nd round WR Hollins 4th round WR Shorter/Isabella
