  1. Deadline pressure? It's his blog. No deadline. Also, speculation allowed. Of course, you're absolutely entitled to disagree with his opinion ...
  2. Review: "Then Levy Said to Kelly ..." When I set out to review Jim Gehman's book "Then Levy Said to Kelly ..." back in April -- yes, April -- I planned on making this a series and inviting the authors here to talk about their work, thinking it would fill some time before training camp. Well, obviously, time got away from me. Still like to hear some feedback, though, both on the review and on the overall plan. If they're willing, what do y'all think about a question-and-answer session with each writer? Not sure whether it would be here on the board, or a mailbag type of thing.
  3. Just another means of communication. For me, it's more convenient to tweet at some contacts -- the PR guys for our hometown guys' pro baseball teams, for example -- than to track down an e-mail addy or phone number. (But if I need to follow up on something, I still have that option.) And any newspaper that isn't using it to get story links out there is missing the boat. Mike Harrington has taken the lead on this in the BuffNews sports dept.; pretty sure Keith McShea will be doing the same with preps stuff this fall.
  4. Just the opening-weekend two-a-days in addition to the night practices.
  5. Of COURSE you tailgate for preseason games, although it's usually a lot more laid back than for a regular-season game. We need the practice too, you know -- and for me, it's nice to spend a mellow August afternoon chillin' and grillin' with friends I haven't seen since December.
  6. What, you think it's impossible to be sarcastic without tossing in a smiley face?
  7. Not sure I saw that when we were out there in '05, but then again, those were extraordinary circumstances.
  8. Hmmm. Starting to think this chat isn't happening. Okay, they're beginning right now, at 11:30. Just like Bruce to show up late, no?
  9. That's a given. So what's your point?
  10. I was 10 months old, so I'm guessing it was past my bedtime. Waycool site: http://www.wechoosethemoon.com
  11. Yes, but they were shown on tape-delay. I have at least the last six years' worth on either VHS or DVD.
  12. They used to, back before the home preseason games sold out. (IIRC, the Kids' Day game has been a sellout ever since they started it, and they also sold out the second preseason game in 2007, so you're talking '06 or earlier.) Channel 7 would carry them the next night. So ... back to the original point of the thread. Is Jax the only team in the league that can't get its home preseason games on the air, even with a tape delay? I believe they are. 13. 2008 prices: Season ticket price $51 each, $58 if you could get them as single-game tix. So you paid a little bit of a premium, but not outrageous. And honestly, the upper deck seats at the Ralph are better than in most of the stadiums I've been to. I think you'll be happy with them.
  14. What possible proof do you have to back up that statement, when WNY politicians have taken the Bills' future in Buffalo straight to Roger Goodell? http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8...mp;confirm=true Yeah, the local politicians (note spelling) in Jacksonville are the only ones in the whoooole country who care about keeping their team. Sure.
  15. Wondered what they did with all that leftover Kelly Krunch ...
  16. That was a rhetorical question, right?
  17. Agreed. I really like the way Chris LaPlaca put it at a symposium a couple of months ago, probably because it rings so true for a Bills fan: "No one boos at the opera. A bad movie doesn't change your life. But when your team loses, you're in a funk for three days."
  18. For the record, he's not a "fan" of any AFC East team. In fact, he grew up watching his hometown Browns during the Brian Sipe era. And also FWIW, people who say "oh, that guy must be a (team name) fan" whenever they disagree with something he's written are right at the top of every sportswriter's "Yup, these are our readers" list. (That phrase is usually accompanied by an eye-roll and/or a sarcastic laugh ...)
  19. I think it may have been different if Watson hadn't fallen apart in the playoff. But you're right, Old Tom said it best himself when speaking about the overtime (see if I can still remember the quote): "Stewart did what he had to do to win, and I didn't give him much competition." So congrats to Cink, a worthy champion ... but I still would've rather read a different story in tomorrow morning's paper. You know what ran through my mind at one point? The title of Vic Carucci's book about the Bills' "Almost-Dream Season." So close ... if he'd pulled the 9 instead of the 8 ... Tweet from Tim Dahlberg: "The scene on the course during the playoff was surreal. No one wanted Cink to win, and fans looked like someone had kicked their dog."
  20. I think most people will understand that Watson lost it on his own, but I'd imagine that this isn't the way Cink wanted to win his first major. Instead of celebrating his win, just about everyone will be saying, "if only ..."
  21. From Dan Jenkins: "If he wins the playoff against Watson, Cink has a chance to become the most hated man in the world." I was planning on covering a baseball game today. Hope they're still playing when this is over, because I'm not leaving.
  22. nooooooooo. Too much adrenaline pushed it through the green, and he played it too safe on the putt. Nothing personal, Stewart Cink, but I hope you find every single bunker on the next four holes.
  23. After 71 holes of The Open Championship, a man two months shy of his 60th birthday holds a one-shot lead. Awesome. Amazing. Bring it home, Toooom.
