Actually, Russ is the one who called up a friend with a plane and flew to FL to pick up TO and Drew Rosenhaus, then began negotiating on the ride back to WNY. Believe him or don't, but from the story he told, he was VERY involved with that deal.

And while I still personally believe it's a longshot, I think Cowher-to-Buffalo -- an idea Scott Pitoniak began championing back in October -- is better than we could have hoped for. I talked to Scott at a basketball game the day Jauron was fired, and when I bemoaned the fact that Jon Gruden (my personal preference) had just signed a contract extension with ESPN, he noted with a smile, "Cowher's still out there"...

Ouch. Sad but true. The hope of a tiny amount of watchable football? Fewell DID beat Miami before the latest wave of injuries kicked in ... (And lest you think I'm suggesting removing the interim tag, no. Lesser of two evils -- or perhaps the better of two mediocrities -- is all that move amounted to.)

Thing is, though -- while Cowher might want to get back in, he still doesn't need to find a job this offseason. Another year on the broadcast side, especially if Fox doesn't get an extension in Carolina, might not look so bad to him...

I saw it when he first posted it, and thought, "oooh, that's not going to go over well." And his backtrack, telling Schefter he should've saved his comments for the locker room, was the smartest thing he's "said" on there in quite a while.

As a good friend told me last week, "You know that old joke about surgery, 'It's minor ... unless it's you.'" (Wasn't me, but someone I care very deeply about, so I figure the same rule applies.) And I'm not sure it qualified as "minor" surgery, so yeah, I've been stressing about this situation ever since I found out about it. With that in mind, I'm relieved to report that said family member is resting comfortably at home and recuperating nicely, and we both appreciate all the thoughts/prayers/good karma. If you could, though ... I'd ask you to redirect those thoughts toward our friend scribo, who suffered a tremendous loss in his own family this week. Thanks again.
