  1. Yup, which gives me something else to ponder. Because of that switch, the Packers tried to make Aaron Kampman -- who went to two Pro Bowls during Sanders' tenure -- into an OLB, and he wasn't happy about it. Kampman's a FA; depending on his knee (rehabbing an ACL, but says he'll be ready for training camp) and Aaron Schobel's decision whether or not to retire, I wonder if the Bills would show interest. Presuming they're still a 4-3 team, which is no certainty...
  2. Don't care. Merely mentioning that he did not, in fact, "get us to 9-7."
  3. He did? 3-13, 8-8, 6-10. 9-7, the only winning record in the last decade, was Mularkey's first year.
  4. I haven't looked at next year's schedule, but I sincerely hope we're not Miami's Homecoming opponent...
  5. Could just mean that Gailey hasn't settled on exactly where he wants Sanders -- after all, I'm pretty sure he's coached each segment of the D at some point in his long career. On the other hand ... hmmmm.
  6. Just thinking out loud ... Parse this sentence: Mentions that Catavolos will keep the same position, but does NOT do the same for Sanders, who has also had previous experience as a DC (three years with the Packers). Hmmmm.
  7. Then we read both King's story and this one differently. The precise quote from King's version: Edit: Williams did just add the "thank goodness that didn't happen" line, and for that ... yeah, <bleep> him.
  8. Could be wrong, but I'm thinking there might not be any official word out of One Bills Drive until the entire staff is in place. Jaguars are doing the same thing. Also, while NYC media is reporting that former Jets assistant Chuck Smith is joining the Vols' staff, nobody in Knoxville is willing to confirm that. Some do, some don't ...
  9. Nobody really decided "against" Brees. The Bills took Clements in the first, where Brees probably would have been a reach, and were unable to trade back up to the top of Round 2 to get him. Kind of like how Donahoe wanted Roethlisberger in 2004, but there was no way the Steelers were going to let the Bills jump ahead of them, calling every team between 5-10 (Giants took Rivers at 4, they were at 11) to let them know they were willing to beat any trade offers.
  10. Technically, I suppose he could have still wanted to draft Brees to groom even though RJ was set to start. Just thought that quote was amusing ... and to be honest, I wasn't sure what I was going to find when I pulled that issue of Shout! out of the storage box.
  11. There is that, and don't forget that we saw Brees in person in 2002. Williams' defense made him look terrible, and he was benched for Flutie. Since y'all linked to the NFLNation post, not the AFC East one, I'll cut/paste my reply from there:
  12. Brohm did indeed start a game for Buffalo, so yes, it's accurate to put his name on that list.
  13. No, but it's a perfect opportunity for a few wisecracks...
  14. I have no problem believing Nix's assertion that the Bills were getting 15 calls per day. This assumes, of course, that 14 were from Brian Billick.
  15. How about 265 on a PBA-level oil pattern, a score I'm guessing most overweight, out of shape, drunk slobs would never come within 100 pins of throwing? My brother has his Tour card. At that level, the game is a little more complex than picking up an alley ball off the rack.
  16. Note the "in 27 years" part of that statement. (Hint: we're old. )
  17. Valid point .. but what team could possibly have a three-game losing streak against Buffalo, other than Marvin Lewis' Bengals?
  18. And if they were to go back through those conversations, how much of that stuff would they want to be off the record? Like you said, we all self-edit. Corresponded with someone in San Diego the day of the Nix announcement. That person praised Buddy, said how happy everyone out there was for him. Great guy, great eye for talent, etc. Nothing that could be even remotely controversial ... but at the end of the e-mail, they tacked on a note saying "feel free to share, but please don't attribute me." If someone from a front office doesn't want to go on the record for that, is anyone truly shocked that the snipers in the PFW piece chose to remain anonymous?
  19. Yeah, got one of those too. Think I'll frame it, right next to the Photoshopped team picture. Or perhaps not.
  20. Indeed. I was chatting with a HS hoops coach last month, right after his team won a holiday tourney. Nonchalantly set my recorder on the corner of the scorer's table so I'd have a hand free to page through the scorebook, and when he saw it, his whole demeanor changed. "That isn't on, is it?" he asked. (It wasn't; I wanted to double-check a couple of their stats against mine before starting the interview.) "I hate those things -- I always end up saying something that sounds stupid when they write it." So, I just took notes while we talked instead ... but I still got the impression that he was more guarded than he would have been without the earlier exchange.
  21. In other words ... yes, people absolutely DO change when they see you turn on the recorder or start taking notes.
  22. Bumping this up for the weekday crowd ...
