  1. True. That MVP award he picked up at the Senior Bowl yesterday didn't hurt his draft position any....
  2. I saw Lynn Swann play. (I live in PA, remember?) He was certainly more graceful; he made some stupendous catches. If he'd played in this era, he'd be a frequent flyer on Sportscenter's "Plays of the Week" every Sunday. But if Bradshaw needed 10 yards on a 3rd-and-9, he looked for Stallworth, because Stallworth was a better bet to get the tough yards. Just like Reed was in Buffalo. So who's "better"? As for RBs: neither Emmitt nor Franco comes anywhere near matching O.J.'s 4.7 yards per carry, the main stat I use to judge my HOF backs. (In fact, of the top 25 rushing-yardage leaders, only Barry Sanders and Jim Brown top Simpson's average. That sounds about right.)
  3. Yup. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and move on...
  4. First, let's see just exactly how much more prolific statswise Monk was, why don't we? Reed: led Bills in receiving nine times in the ten seasons from 1988-1997. Seven Pro Bowls. 951 catches, 13198 yards, 13.9 ypc, 87 touchdowns. 19 playoff games, 85 catches-1230 yards, 9 touchdowns. Five 100-yard games, of which the Bills won 3... including the most memorable, the Comeback. Monk: led Redskins in receiving four times in his fourteen seasons in Washington. Three Pro Bowls. 940 catches, 12721 yards, 13.5 ypc, 68 touchdowns. 15 playoff games, 69 catches-1062 yards, 7 touchdowns. Four 100-yard games; SB XXVI was the only one of those the Redskins won. Even then, Monk wasn't Washington's leading receiver in that game, Gary Clark was. 951 > 940, 13198 > 12721, 13.9 > 13.5, and 87 > 68. Yes, let's do.#5 all-time in receptions: as already noted, NO Hall of Fame WR has more catches than Reed. #8 all-time in receiving yards: former teammate James Lofton is the only current HOF enshrinee with more. #10 all-time in touchdown catches: only Steve Largent, Don Hutson, and Don Maynard top him in this category among HOF WRs. 13 seasons with 50+ catches. Jerry Rice is the only other WR that can make that claim, until Marvin Harrison gets there two years from now. Nobody else has more than 11. Ever. Lynn Swann? Are you serious? 336 receptions-5462 yards-51 TD Lynn Swann? Care to guess how many 1,000 yard seasons he had? Try ZERO (look it up). He wasn't even the best receiver on his own TEAM; Stallworth was. Swann got in first because everybody remembered the Super Bowl X highlight film. Do yourself a favor and watch the second half of the Comeback game instead. No Kelly. No Thurman. Oilers knew Reed was getting the ball, and he still torched them for three second-half touchdowns. If you truly think one game defines a career, I'd be more than happy to submit that performance against ANY in league history.
  5. Best player on the field that night, no matter whose name is listed as MVP.
  6. Hardly. Our clubs were $1270 each last year, and they aren't the most expensive ones.
  7. There's still a few. Rod Coleman, La'Roi Glover, and John Thornton are all sub-300, and all have had decent careers. Regarding the OL/DL, here's how much the game has changed in the last 10-20 years: Mean Joe Greene played at 275... Dan Hampton 264... Dierdorf 275... heck, Joe DeLamielleure (254) would've been a blocking FB or TE in today's NFL. In fact, scanning the 2003 HoF media guide (the most recent print edition I have), no enshrinee tips the scales more than Mike Munchak (281). (Betcha Madden's got him beat, though... )
  8. Not here on TSW -- I think most of us are pretty realistic about the Bills' pricing in comparison to the rest of the league -- but I guess the phone lines to GR were lit up the other day. (Wonder how many of them were actually previous ticket-buyers...)
  9. Bonnies got bombed 92-66 on their home court tonight, to drop to 5-14. I'll still take him if you still want to dump him.
  10. Tell me more of this Versus. I've heard rumors of its existence, but have yet to confirm them...
  11. http://buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=4580, as linked on the TBD front page. Rockpile seasons stay the same, most corner/endzone seats go up just a couple of bucks per game, upper-deck corners are actually going DOWN a couple of bucks for single-game seats... but if you've got good seats in either the lower bowl or the front of the upper deck, be prepared for some sticker shock. I was hoping mine weren't classified as Sideline Center (since I'm on the eleven-yard line), but it looks like they are... so they're jumping from $940 to $1200. :wincing: Still, $60 for a good 100-level seat is below just about any other stadium in the league. At least that's what I'll be trying to tell myself when the official invoice shows up and I actually have to write the check... 12. I thought he said 'chew' when I watched it Monday, but I wasn't paying that much attention. Besides, where Sean S. is concerned, the cell-phone story is MUCH more amusing...
  13. re: Bears-Colts history... Here's a cool site with uniform histories for all NFL teams, with graphics dating back to 1959. Looks like the white "C" was added in '62, changed to orange in '74. (Good call, tex/Flanders.) Other than some minor stripe-tweaking and the GSH honorarium, the 1974 versions look exactly like what they'll be wearing a week from Sunday. (Too bad the replicas don't cost what they did back then, though... )
  14. If you're talking about the Sunday night gabfest on WTAE, that wasn't a Stillers exec, that was Kevin Gorman (Mike Prisuta's colleague at the Trib). Grimm and Tomlin were both finalists for the job, contracts were discussed with both, but the Steelers never told Grimm he was the winner... because to them, he never was.
  15. I don't even need to click the link to know who/what it is. But yeah, that's what I was hearing when I typed that...
  16. Only if you read the Trib. Sounds like he and Whisenhunt DID have a deal in place, doesn't it? I may have to tune into Savran tonight; I'm sure he'll have something to say on the subject.
  17. Eli. ELI ?!?!?!?! I didn't think Dannyboy had suffered that many concussions during his career. Obviously, I was wrong...
  18. Interesting note about someone who's garnered his share of TSW bandwidth: May have turned some traditional 4-3 teams off, but might be just what the Tampa-2 style teams are looking for. We'll see. NFL Draft Countdown always has great Senior Bowl coverage, with both SW's blog and his recaps from each practice.
  19. Incredibly difficult, I would think. Smaller stadium than ours, diehard fanbase = no single-game sales at the box office, and inflated prices on stubhub and the like.
  20. "So Drew, what exactly have you done for T.O. other than get him kicked off the team?" "Next question."
  21. To answer Hootie's question, I'm not a doctor, but starting about thirteen years ago I've had a really, really good reason to read up on Graves'/thyrotoxicosis. Fortunately, that's one of the symptoms I didn't have -- could do without the cardiac complications, but the mere thought of eye surgery makes me cringe.
  22. Judging by earlier comments from the Sun Sentinel's Dolphins blog, it doesn't sound like the Fishie fans will approve of this decision... Perhaps because of this? Not just bad, historically bad.
