IIRC, Edwards was drafted to be the Lions' designated pass-rusher. I think Marv saw Kelsay as the next Phil Hansen, doing the dirty work so the right end could disrupt the offense. You're right, of course -- it's hard to imagine a scenario that doesn't include Bruce as a first-ballot Hall of Famer. But they set the precedent with Jim and continued it with Thurman, so I don't expect it to change this time around.
