From everything I've heard, The News is a great place to work compared to most of the chain newspapers. (For example, the aforementioned PBPost is currently in the process of whacking between 25-40 percent of the newsroom staff.) So if someone like Graham wants an NFL beat, he either waits out Gaughan and Wilson -- which could take a long, long time, since neither is anywhere near retirement age -- or packs his bags and moves on.
Case in point: Keith McShea's 2007 Daytona recap garnered him a top-10 mention in the APSE national writing awards, but he still covers mostly preps for The News. I have no doubt he could work a bigger beat somewhere else, but with more shops firing than hiring these days, he might be better off staying put and keeping a steady paycheck.
