Nice argument, but you're wrong.  Until there are some fundamental changes in how the NFL operates, there are some things that remain the same.  One of those is that the way the salary cap and free agency and the cap are currently operated, it's impossible for any team to keep it's good starters year after year after year.   They're always coming and going.   Levy left.   The Bills probably can't keep Edmunds, Knox, Oliver, and Poyer.   It just isn't possible.

The result is that the GM always has to be looking for starter-caliber players.  The lower you go in the draft, the less likely you are to find a starter-caliber player.   The cut-off seems to be the third round.  The measure of success for a third-round pick is "does he become a starter for us?"  If the answer is yes, you drafted well.  If the answer is no, you didn't.  Harrison Philips, for example.  Spencer Brown, for another.  Why is that the case?   Because you can't continually replenish your starters only in the first two rounds.  There are 22 starters, and if they start for you, on average, for six years, that means you need three new starters every year, and you can't get three starters out of two rounds of the draft.

That's the reality in which Beane is operating, and although offense and defense evolves, that has been the reality since modern free agency began, and it shows no signs of changing.

If you want to believe they drafted Bernard to be a role player, you're free to do so.   I seriously doubt it.  I think Beane drafted him to start, and it's McDermott's job to figure out how to start him, and how to start him sooner rather than later.   Just like it was McDermott's job to do it with Harrison Philips and Spencer Brown.

He's gonna be Edmunds replacement next year.

No. They played the highest percentage of nickel D in the NFL and finished #1 overall.

Now they are just going to scrap that and go back to a base 4-3?

C'mon man...I know it's cool to come up with hypotheticals but this is about as far fetched as you can get

Base nickel doesn't stop Henry, Taylor the Pats RB crew or any other big back. Taron Johnson cannot bring them down...and BTW that was 3 losses which ultimately prevented the no.1 seed and home games throughout.

They are going to have to be smart enough to play a 4-3 against teams they need to when they need to. Unfortunately, adapting week to week to specific opponents is not Frazier's strong suit. We are going to be in the same boat this year given our schedule of teams that are gonna try to stuff it down our throat and keep Allen off the field....Just like the "We gonna rush 4 and hope to get pressure" is a sign of another stuck in their ways coaching approach. I hate not being able to use Frazier and creative in the same sentence and sadly I don't think that'll change.

Not to go too far off topic, but not only do they need to adapt a 4-3 against heavy run teams, they need to play press man. more. I believe they can do it with Elam....and while their at it, why not try a 5-2-4. when Lorax was here he would slide in over the guard and was a huge upset for olines doing that. That's the perfect role for Boogie.

P.S for all the bashing Klein gets, he made more big plays than T.E.

If you are using pre-made "wing sauce" for wings, then your wings probably taste like crap and are not "Buffalo" wings.

Back in the 70's thru the 90's, it was basically Franks, butter and Tabasco. I like to use that base as a starting point and get creative. I want a little smokiness and spice. I like to use a little liquid smoke, roasted red pepper and garlic seasoning and I like to try different Tabascos. I also do not skimp on the Bleu cheese. Marie's or T. Marzettis.

I don't think Edmunds is that unique. He's an elite athlete who has struggled with the mental side of football. That's an entire genre of NFL player.

Well put. I mentioned earlier that in the K.C. playoff game, he looked...to me, like a bewildered rookie. However K.C.'s rookie Nick Bolton looked like a seasoned vet. Fred Warner Tremaine ain't. Also agree about the mental side. You can just tell when you hear players talk during interviews and I heard a lengthy one recently. I'm not too optimistic about any drastic improvement.

I have a ton of respect for players who try hard to improve their craft in the off season. TE university, Pass rush summit, Jordan Palmer etc. Even Singletary did it. I don't get the idea that Edmunds thinks he needs any of that. Maybe that's because ( and let us not forget), he was pick no. 16.  He says he just needs to trust his instincts and what he sees more.

I won't be surprised if Bernard impresses in some way this year and they bring in new talent be it draft or Free agency. next year.

He did. It was in his mini camp / OTA presser on 7th June for those who want to find it. He generally said Tremaine is still growing and still learning. He was then asked something like "what more does Tremaine need to do?" and his answer was "keep doing what he is doing but with more of those game changing splash plays." Slightly paraphrasing. So it wasn't said entirely as a negative, it was a balanced perspective.

The Beane, McDermott and Frazier comments on Tremaine have been notably circumspect this offseason with the exception of Beane's combine interview. They are very much in wait and see mode. I think it is 50/50 on whether 2022 is his last season with the Bills.

50/50 I agree, but in the K.C playoff game it looked like it was his first time in an NFL game. I'm not expecting much if any improvement in YEAR 5.

Bills fans will always need a whipping boy, no matter how good or how bad the team is.

My own belief is that Edmunds has many more responsibilities in the Bills' defense than those "traditionally" associated with a MLB.  I don't study the games enough to comment on what others say about his "lack of instincts" but what I see is an athletic, disruptive player who clearly impacts what the opposing offense is trying to do.

Edmunds being in the right position to force a QB to throw a pass just slightly differently than he wanted to, resulting in an incompletion, tipped ball, or INT doesn't show up on the stat sheet.  I've heard players talk about his enormous "presence" that makes teams have to plan around him.

I have not once heard McD or Frazier make the comment "Tremaine needs to make more plays."  They've said that about lots of other young defenders.

Some want a thumping MLB who stuffs the run.  That ain't Edmunds and never will be.  Continuing to hope he becomes that is an exercise in futility.

Frazier did indeed say that Tremaine needs to make more splash plays. That statement was brought up to him during an interview. He says that he just needs to trust his instincts and what he sees more.

Well not trying to be a hater, but I've seen enough to where I can't envision them even entertaining giving him 15 plus per year. I'm not thrilled with giving him almost 13 this yr. I get a sense about guys when I hear them speak and I'm sorry, I just don't think his brain matches his body. Maybe I'll be surprised.....

Some of it is him and I think some of it is slow cooking him. For a team to keep a player around for this long they definitely see something in him.

I can't help but have the feeling he could turn into a Gabe Davis type so I'm not ready to throw the towel in yet.

We traded down with the Rams and took EJ. The Rams took Tavon Austin. The circle is now complete.

I had a random thought whilst pondering this subject. We don't look so bad now, do we?....signed  Doug Whaley and Russ Brandon.

I'm sorry, I had the Brown's situation going on in my mind. Note to self, don't need a whole Gummy.

Speaking of lawyer’s strategies: while that might be true from a criminal standpoint, how does that admission not invite suspension from the league?

I would think the question would be, if the complaints include unwanted sexual advances resulting in at least one woman brought to tears, does that constitute sexual assault? It would seem so.

I would certainly expect the league would view that way, especially given the number of complaints. Are there simply cases of gold diggers?...more than likely, but one thing proven in each one is that Watson's one stupid dude.

I thought he looked good in the preseason, but I doubt he makes the final roster now. This paves the way for a guy like Joe Giles-Harris or Baylon Spector to crack the final 53.

Not projecting future FA signings or draft picks, I could see Barnard, Milano and Spector as a very good to great 4-3 LB setup. No way in H they can be dumb enough to pay Edmunds 15+ per yr. .I'll shave my head if he all off a sudden makes game changing play(s) this year.

Is there really any sense in banning these substances?  My guess is that most players are using SOMETHING illegal.  The NFL has been fueled my manmade monsters for decades.  Let them shrivel their nuts.  Who cares?

Exactly! signed...Lyle Alazado, Bill Romanowski...What are PEDS anyway? Deer antler spray? Nugenix? B12? I would think anabolic steroids were 2 or 3 decades ago. Maybe I'm naive.

  12. I think Lamar...regardless of what any of us think of him, needs an agent like Drew R. Like the old saying goes..."He who represents himself, has a fool for an attorney" ....and I think he can go farther than Murray. I also think that being used the way he is may be weighing on his mind as to how long he will last, and I don't blame him.

I'll give Roman credit for what he's done, but it ain't sustainable. All I can currently fault Lamar for is lack of common sense. Ma Ma Ma Ma Mamma says.....

Johnson is supposed to be really smart and makes good decision, abut lacks measurables and thleticism.  I think that puts a cap on his upside.  The Bills have another couple of young guys: Damar Hamlin and Josh Thomas who are good athletes with more size than Johnson.  The question to which we lack the answer is whether or not they have the mental makeup to eventually start.  If they do, Their upside might be higher than Johnson's

No argument there as far as Thomas and and Hamlin, however I do not know the" measurables and athleticism" I was and still am intrigued by what Ed Reed saw in the kid to make those statements. I'm sure we'll get to see more of these guys soon.

Bills don’t owe him anything for outperforming his contract. Just the way it is. He’ll get a deal based on the market.

Just looking at safety deals a little closer the Smith deal actually isn’t as crazy as it sounds.  13th highest guaranteed money. The signing bonus and guaranteed money is actually pretty reasonable. Mathieu got more guaranteed.

Look at the “signed age” for the top deals.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/contracts/safety/

I think the Honeybadger deal would be the marker. I think 9 mil. per is ok. I would think a 2 yr. deal with the 1st being mostly a signing bonus, On the other hand, Ed Reed said Joquain (sp?) Johnson would be a pro bowler for years, so there's that.

I just think this is not the year to break up the safety tandem.

  15. Last year I don't think they had the original starting 5 for most of the season. I think Bates will be fine at RG and am thankful he'll be able to help work with Brown, who I Think will be just fine going forward. Morse, Bates and Brown pulling right I would bet to be huge. Bring back the counter tre. That was money with Thurman.

My concern is if Saffold gets hurt, Mitch gets concussed and or Brown gets nicked. We will be back to musical lineman again.

I'm hoping they found some gems in the UFDA pool. Alec Anderson may turn into a good guard. I actually read on Billswire that Tenuta's NFL comparison is Joe Thuney.

Cody Ford should have been turned into a draft pick.....like Darrien Kinnard.(sp)? I bet the oline is next offseason's big priority.

Taylor was a much twitchier athlete than Rousseau. Their RAS scores bear that out as well:

    Gregory Rousseau RAS

    Jason Taylor RAS

Yeah, IDK Taylor was the first to come to mind when I pictured Greg becoming more dominant, with the long, swimmy, bendy rush. Someone mentioned Peppers and that would be fine, I'd like to see more power.

Maybe he'll push the 280 lb. mark with added muscle. He also may end up with his own unique type of niche. Either way, I'm expecting to see major improvement. He IMO did very good for a rookie to be in there from day one.

I’m interested to see if the two are on the field at the same time. Supposedly they both play the same side mostly.

I'm kinda hoping they use Miller the same way they did Lorax....inside the DE...Groot. That was very successful and being the vet Lorax was , he was able to lead from there. If they're gonna play " we gonna rush four", they better be creative with line stunts at times, see above. I think Shaq needs to try RE with A.J. I like Boogie inside.....IMO. They have to have Groot and Miller on the field at the same time. Looking forward to the upgraded DT play.

Calling it now……Greg Rousseau gets double digit sacks in 2022.

#1 - Von Miller on the other side getting double teamed ……lots of 1on1 action for GR.

#2 - Learning from Von Miller is gonna take his game to the next level.

#3 - Our offense is gonna force alot of opponents to throw the ball to try and play catch-up …….GR will be able to pin his ears back and eat.

#4 - A full year in Buffalo’s strength and conditioning program.

i feel good about him in 22…….12-15 sacks…..calling it now!

Wouldn't it be so cool to hear the national media heads saying.."This guys unstoppable!"...at the very  least a larger, stronger Jason Taylor. That's what I'm seeing. He's not Bruce Smith, but he's got Bruce to teach him.
