And here is the masterpiece: Japanese all-female Shonen Knife with "Sweet Christmas" Well, I just discovered that Shonen Knife had another Christmas song, "Space Christmas". I like the idea to have bison pull Santa's sleigh.
-
Chuck Berry essentially had one - very successful - guitar riff. He just had to exchange the lyrics for each song. Run Rudolph Run is the Christmas version. And here is Lynyrd Skynyrd's version...

what college football teams does everyone root for?
DrW replied to Sweats's topic in College Football
For me, it is the "local" team. When I came to the States to Rochester, it was Syracuse. Then we moved to Lubbock because my wife and I both got positions at Texas Tech, and at that time the Red Raiders were intriguing (Mike Leach) and became my favorite team. When the kids went off to college, things got a bit more difficult as they both chose UT Austin. Our son even played in the Longhorn band for 4+ years. Since then, my loyalty is split between TTU and Texas. And then there is a team that I cannot watch: Boise State - the blue turf makes me seasick. Fortunately, it seems that no other program followed suit; otherwise, we would have red, pink, purple or yellow fields. -
For me, it is not "lost interest", I always disliked - Sports where the results depend on judging (ice skating, gymnastics, equestrian dressage, and all the new X games stuff) - Why are there four different styles of swimming? - Why are there so many different distances in track running? On the other hand, I like sports where you need some versatility (biathlon, triathlon, hepta/decathlon, olympic pentathlon - although the last loses some appeal with the removal of the equestrian part). I could even come up with a few new combination sports: - King/queen of the runners: each athlete does a 60 m sprint, 400 m hurdles, 3000 m steeplechase (or cross-country), and a marathon. - King/queen of the ice track: you have to combine runs in luge, skeleton, and bobsleigh. - Sailor king/queen: First, you let them sail their high-tech, heavily computerized catamarans. In the second round, the skippers have to compete in a $5,000 Optimist dinghy.

My Maerklin train set. It started when I was 3 with a simple oval and Lego houses. It was expanded every year in the 2-3 weeks before Christmas, until it reached a double oval with working signals and a working catenary - all assembled by my Mom (RIP, Mom). I then bought yards of rail so that we could run trains into every room of the 1,000 sq ft apartment.

I was walking down a dirt road And the night was coming on fast I had gone to for some corn meal for our supper By the time I got to Miss Johnson's house I knew there was something wrong By the worried look she had upon her face I said: Miss Johnson could you tell me What are you shaking for She said: Lord, they caught the devil And they got him in jail in Eudora, Arkansas

Do you have any "atypical" foods on your Thanksgiving table?
DrW replied to Logic's topic in Off the Wall
I had a similar experience. Our current dressing is a variation of a David Rosengarten recipe, using ground pork and/or sausage, corn bread/baguette, pecans, celery, onions, sage, thyme, chicken broth and lots of butter. -
What are some of your favorite museums you’ve been too?
DrW replied to Another Fan's topic in Off the Wall
Art: Prado, Madrid (Spain). I was there about 50 years ago, and I still remember Velazquez' "Las Meninas". Modern Art: MoMA, New York. Both Dali museums are worthwhile, the one in St. Petersburg (Florida) and the one in Figueres (Spain). Tram Museum ("Strassenbahnmuseum") Hannover (Germany). The special attraction: They let you drive a tram (20 minutes, $40; 1 hour, $110). https://www.tram-museum.de/besucher/strassenbahn-selbst-fahren/ And finally, right here in Lubbock, the National Ranching Heritage Center, where they have collected farm buildings from all over Texas from 1780 to 1950. -

They don't care if I'm a one-way mirror Well, they're not frightened by my cold exterior They don't ask me questions They don't want to scold me They don't look for answers They just want to hold me I, I, I love little girls They make me feel so good I love little girls They make me feel so bad When they're around They make me feel like I'm the only guy in town I love little girls They make me feel so good

When I came to the US in 1990, one of my desires was to drive a full-size station wagon, a type of car which we did not have in Germany. I got a used Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, and I loved it. We took it from Rochester on trips to the West Coast, to Florida and Louisiana, and to Newfoundland, until it died with 237,000 miles. It was replaced by another full-size wagon, a Pontiac Safari, which did nearly as well. We did not take the Pontiac with us when we moved to West Texas 20+years ago, only my wife's Pontiac Bonneville. Thus, I had to look for a car here, and with two young kids at that time I was thinking SUV. Well, I ended up with my first minivan, a Ford Windstar. I had never imagined me driving such a vehicle, but it was just too darn practical. It was followed by another Windstar, and now for about seven years I have been driving a 2010 Honda Odyssey. It is truly low-maintenance, and at the moment I cannot imagine anything more useful. When my son went to high school, his first car was a hand-me-down Windstar. At first there was some fear of embarrassment, as most kids here drive trucks. However, there was never a problem. On several occasions his classmates decorated the "swagger wagon". Thus, when he had to replace it as student at UT, the first car of his own choice (with some parental financial help) was ... a Honda Odyssey.

There's a mushroom on my eyelid There's a carrot down my back I can see in the distance A vast quantity of beans To you I'm just a flavour To make your stew taste nice Oh my god, here come the onions And – I don't believe it! – at least a pound of rice

Now there's no hope of getting out of here I can feel I'm going soft Dirty waters soak my fibres The whole saucepan's getting hot So I may as well resign myself Make friends with a few peas But I just, I can't help hoping That a tummy ache will bring you to your knees Bring you to your knees Bring you to your knees Bring you to your knees

Follow-up: According to Tom Pelissero (NFL Network), the fine was rescinded on appeal.

Save your money, don't go to the show Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh Well I turned around and I said ho, ho And the northern lights commenced to glow And she said, with a tear in her eye Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow

It's a ghost town rabid underworld Dionysian night vitriolic twilight A mirage comes up it never ends Once you get born you're never the same Left behind erased from time Ain't no decency in being boxed up alive Look around ain't no R.I.P. signs here We don't rest in peace We just disappear So here we are Los Angeles No angels singing in your valley of unease I watch the sun roll down the pacific Over hookered sunset strip They say This is the city The city of angels All I see is dead wings All I see is dead wings
