Your top 5 acting performances of all time
DrW replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in Off the Wall
All brilliant performances. However, in one of his more recent movies, "News of the World", he was outperformed by a 12-year old, Helena Zengel. -

I am aware that Frazier is often a target of criticism here. But it seems that there are people who appreciate his achievements. Leslie, if you ever stumble across this web site, congratulations! https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/bills-defensive-coordinator-leslie-frazier-honored-for-lifetime-achievement-as-an-assistant-coach-in-the/article_33e08518-d549-11ec-81d6-2f96b9d88ffe.html#tracking-source=in-article

I always liked songs incorporating circus music (sorry, I do not have video for any)... The classical example (as far as rock music is concerned), and one of the most innovative McCartney tunes... Brilliant, but much darker... The United States of America made only one album, but it is outstanding. No guitars, but very primitive synthesizers and "ring modulators". One of the most innovative bands of the late 1960s... Another short-lived band. The Flock combined a brass section (a la Chicago or Blood, Sweat and Tears) with a violin (Jerry Goodman).

Well, that is a very manipulative use of statistics. According to FBI.gov, the numbers for 2020 are 455 for rifles and 393 for not only hammers, but blunt objects in general (clubs, hammers,...). And then there is a much larger group of 4863 murder victims killed by "firearms, type not stated". I am sure there are also some rifles hidden in this group. https://www.statista.com/statistics/195325/murder-victims-in-the-us-by-weapon-used/

Beautiful. I get jealous when I see this variety on their facebook site. These feeders are located in Fort Davis, where it hilly with lots of trees in the valleys. We are about 6 hours away in Lubbock, where it is essentially flat with very few native trees. Compared to Rochester where we lived before, what I miss most are the warblers. Here you get yellow-rumped and orange-crowned warblers. In Rochester a trip to the Island Cottage Woods during spring migration could bring you 10 warbler species within a couple of hours. As to your suggestion of mealworm feeders, my wife would see this as a reason for divorce, even the dried ones.

Here in West Texas, migration is pretty much over. Thus, we have taken the feeders down for the summer; we still supply water. Many birds when raising their young switch to a diet that is more protein based, relying on insects and other invertebrates instead of seeds. Bird activity in the summer is pretty low here, mostly due to the high temps (we already had 2 days this year with > 100 F) and the lack of precipitation. The most interesting birds found in our backyard now (probably nesting here or nearby) are Western Kingbirds and Curve-billed Thrashers. The kingbirds are pretty acrobatic fliers when catching insects, and they are not afraid of humans. When I mow the lawn, I usually have one or two of them around looking for their next catch, similar to gulls following a fishing boat. The thrashers love to dig into the dirt in grooves (the technical term is "contraction joints") between concrete slabs, looking for food. And they are very meticulous. Some mornings we find one or two yards of joints cleaned out, with the dirt taken from the joint neatly piled up to both sides of it.

In honor of Mother's Day....Greatest TV Mom's of all-time?
DrW replied to BillsPride12's topic in Off the Wall
According to imdb.com: The writers original wanted to keep the family's surname a mystery but it was already revealed on the show. The last name of the family has been revealed only twice in the show, in Pilot (2000), where Francis wears the name tag "Wilkerson" on his school uniform (it can be seen best in the scene where he is talking with his family on the phone). Also, though unaired, it appears in a joke from the original pilot script. In that script, was walking to school when a neighborhood kid came running up shouting, "Malcolm, Malcolm, Malcolm. I was talking to my parents last night - I was listening to them talk, and what's your last name?" "Wilkerson, why?" Malcolm replied. "Oh. Who are the Pariahs?" said the other kid. The joke was eventually cut. -
I wear a watch for work. One reason is teaching. With the near universal use of slideshow-based lectures, working clocks have become a rarity in our lecture halls; instead, you are expected to use the computer clock. However, I still do a lot of my teaching on the whiteboard (which is preferred by most students) and often will not even switch on the computer.

For my money, the best band ever from Ireland (sorry, U2). Unfortunately, they were very short-lived. Rory Gallagher died much too young in 1995.

Wet Leg "Wet Dream" - 2 obscure Buffalo references
DrW replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in Off the Wall
Upon recommendation by my daughter, I have been following this band now for nearly a year. They produce some of the most catching indie pop on the market right now. Both of the "official" band members (Rhian Teasdale and Heather Chambers) and their three band mates are from the Isle of Wight on the south coast of England. There does not appear to be an obvious link of any band member to Western New York. All the videos are shot in England, mostly on the Isle of Wight. An interpretation of the Buffalo 66 reference is given here: https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/the-indie-film-in-wet-leg-song-wet-dream/ I have no idea how a band member ended up with a t-shirt of a WNY taxidermy. -
Now for something completely different...

As my son goes to UT Austin and plays in the Longhorn Band, I have watched a lot of Bijan Robinson. He is terrific. To me, he seems indeed better than all the RBs in this (2022) draft. Unfortunately, he will be long gone before our pick at #32 in the 2023 draft.

A relatively new band with one of the best names: Illuminati Hotties If you answered "yes" to Frank Zappa's question "Does humor belong in music?", check out the song "MMMOOOAAAAAYAYA" at 13:23.

I would not worry too much about disturbing mourning doves. A couple of years ago we had a pair breeding in a hanging shrub right next to the entrance of our house. While we use mostly the garage entrance, the main entrance is used once or twice a day by deliveries. In that case, he doves just hunker down in their nest. Only if you have a closer look (as I did from time to time), the parent would leave the nest, but return a few minutes after I had left. In that year, they raised three chicks. Other bird species that have nested on our 1 acre lot: Mallard Barn Swallow Western Kingbird (a very interesting nest, with lots of man-made blue plastic strips woven into the twigs) House Sparrow Curve-billed Thrasher Grackle (most likely Great-tailed) Due to increasing urban development in the neighborhood, the variety of wildlife has suffered.

Well, as I am in charge of the Thanksgiving feast, it will probably mean that the turkey will be served already on Wednesday. Last year we had to do the same as our son who is playing in the Longhorn Band had to be back in Austin on Thursday.

What is your favorite football related phrase?

I call BS on this. Smerlas was not smart enough to come up with something as witty as this. A google search of the quote, even allowing for modifications, did not give any result closely resembling this quote.
