Deshaun Watson to Browns - $230 million guaranteed
FilthyBeast replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
Considering there will probably be at least 3 PO teams that come out of the AFCW this year it's going to be very tough for the Browns to make the playoffs unless it's via division title and still see nothing on paper that indicates they are better than a (healthy) Ravens and Bengals team right now to surpass either of them. -
Deshaun Watson to Browns - $230 million guaranteed
FilthyBeast replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
100% accurate and what I said too. Watson is an upgrade over Mayfield, but is he even a fit there given their a built to be a physical, power running team? What happens to that now and who is he even going to throw the ball to? I actually feel sorry for the Browns fans who suffered many years like Buffalo because this situation has disaster written all over it and still can't fathom why any team would give up so much for a guy who signed a big extension already and quit on his team and demanded to be traded. Going to be hilarious when he does the same thing in Cleveland when they are no better than 3rd place in their division this year. -
Deshaun Watson to Browns - $230 million guaranteed
FilthyBeast replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
I still think Watson is overrated and his only playoff win came against the Bills when Allen wasn't nearly the QB he is today and yet we probably should have won that game. Also good chance Watson is still suspended by the NFL at some point and this is now another loaded division with the defending AFC champions, a healthy Ravens squad and Steelers team that still has a playoff caliber roster with an upgrade at QB now. In other words don't be surprised if the Browns aren't even in the playoffs again this year. -
Declining player metric wise, wanted to be reunited with his oline coach and compete for a ring. Add to the fact he probably was smart enough to understand his market this deal isn't that much of a surprise. Worst case for the Bills is he's just a drop in replacement for Wiliams and/or placeholder for a rookie we draft next month.

Bills sign Marquel Lee (backup/ST linebacker)
FilthyBeast replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
Weird this guy would sign here again knowing he's probably a long shot to make the team just like last year. -
Trading Edmunds makes no sense at this point
FilthyBeast replied to bubba2018's topic in The Stadium Wall
That's part of my point in trading him so he can be on a team that's a better fit (i.e. playing behind larger bodies in a 3-4/4-3). Still think he belongs outside anyway in either of these type of schemes. Because obviously we just signed a bunch of DT's that are similar to what we've had in recent years that fit McD/Frazier scheme, therefore nothing should be expected to change if Edmunds is still here. -
Star released. Pre-6/1 per Joe B, $1.5M cap savings.
FilthyBeast replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
Actually in Star's defense he did have a few big games in terms of game changing plays (cowboys thanksgiving game comes to mind) but in his role he was supposed to be more of a true 'space eater', but in this case because of his ridiculous contract he was more of a 'salary cap eater' here. -

Your last sentence sums it up perfectly and why Beane has no business paying a guy like this $12 million this season and likely much more on a long term extension. Most fans like myself were patient the first few years buying into the 'he's still only 19/20 years old and growing into his frame' idea. But we are now entering the 5th year of the Edmunds experiment still waiting for something that's simply not coming especially since LB is one of the easiest positions to transition from the college to pro level. At some point you just need a fresh start and that would benefit both sides here especially for a team that realizes any potential Edmunds may still have is going to be in a different defense/scheme. -
OT: The sudden existential crisis in New England

Looks like the Patriots are going to have to settle for scraps and dumpster diving like the Bills used to for many years when they couldn't land bigger names. -

Pretty much all the dead weight is off this team now minus a few other bad draft picks (i.e. Ford and Epenesa) that will likely be traded or released this summer. -
Trading Edmunds makes no sense at this point
FilthyBeast replied to bubba2018's topic in The Stadium Wall
It actually does make sense for a number of reasons that have been beat to death including but not limited to: - $12 million in cap space free immediately - would likely get a 2nd round pick at minimum (possibly more) - can sign Wagner or other stop gap LB much cheaper, wagner (and others) would be instant upgrade/at worse lateral move. - despite all the cap maneuvering we aren't going to be able to keep everyone and no way I'm paying $15 - $20 million a season for a guy like Edmunds starting in 2023. At this point he probably stays but still think it's very possible he's moved soon especially the longer guys like Wagner stay on the market. -
I would certainly take Cox over Settle/Jones but it's too late now. Any other pending FA moves likely revolve around securing a veteran DB and QB. Although you can argue we still need another veteran WR and RB with Beasely now officially gone and the RB from Washington deciding to stay with them.

Zay Jones to Jags for 3 years up to $30M with $24M base
FilthyBeast replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
I honestly didn't even see this until today given all the other big news happening with the Bills and around the league. Jones probably had the best season of his career with the Raiders this year but this kind of money for a guy who has never even sniffed 1000 yards in a single season...yikes! -
Bills have 8 first/second round picks on DL
FilthyBeast replied to pennstate10's topic in The Stadium Wall
It will likely be epenesa. He really has looked like a bust so far and even if he looks good in summer again like last year I would expect Beane to try and move him or ultimately cut him. -
I do agree that his snap count in Sept/Oct will be drastically different than what we see during the stretch run in Nov/Dec/Jan if anything to keep him fresh and hopefully avoid injury. But his deal is essentially only a 2 year one and still can't pay a guy $17+ a year for 50% of the snaps or less overall.
-
I also think Epenesa will be cut or traded this summer even if he looks good in camp again. Too smallish of a player and seems like a bust unfortunately. Speaking of rotation, I know that McD and Frazier seem to value this concept but you don't sign a guy like Von Miller to be a situational pass rusher. He's definitely getting 60% of the snaps minimum each game which means a lot of these other guys will have to make the most of their time on the field. Also going to be a juggling act each week in terms of the inactive list again and which both Lawson and Phillips will have to embrace during their 2nd tour of duty here if they are in fact on the final roster.

Allen Robinson to the Rams - 3 years, $46.5M
FilthyBeast replied to Alphadawg7's topic in The Stadium Wall
Rams definitely loading up looking to repeat but they won't have a key piece they traded their 2nd and 3rd round pick for.... -
Browns are pretty much in the same situation as the colts in that they have a roster loaded with talent that is close to competing for a SB but a major hole at QB. And now they are going to be in a very awkward position missing out on Watson and now having to trade Mayfield from the fallout of that.
-
While the whole Phillips/Lawson reunion storyline is great, there's no guarantees either of them are going to be on the roster beyond training camp because of how deep this line is all of a sudden.
-
My point in discussing with other posters, is that pressure alone has not worked for us the last few years. Sure against scrub QB's, rookies, etc this defense has feasted. But face a real QB and offense and the results have been markedly different. Obviously Beane and McD understood this like us fans and armchair GM's did and why a big time move was made. So if we do bring back Hughes or Addison I would expect the overall sacks numbers to flourish, they might anyway because of all the attention Miller and Oliver are going to get. Could see a guy like Groot or Basham truly explode in year 2.

OT: The sudden existential crisis in New England
FilthyBeast replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
Really confused by BB and the Pats offseason plan. It was expected they were going to be players again in FA but as of right now their roster is markedly worse on paper than last year. And their local media is equally perplexed by the offensive line especially after news broke with Miller landing with the Bills. To their credit though they have been great at developing the oline position with late round draft picks and UDFA types and perhaps plan on doing that again even though it's a risky move with a developing young player like Jones entering a crucial 2nd season. -
Understood, that was my opinion of course based on the obvious in terms of what happened against the Chiefs in the playoffs and against similar good teams in recent years. Again, I'm not disagreeing with you that JH is/was a bad player. Just don't feel there's room for him here now given the massive upgrade we just made. But if he were to resign here I'm not going to criticize or complain about it.

Cutting Star Lotulelei- why not ask him to retire?
FilthyBeast replied to Commish's topic in The Stadium Wall
I know but my point is that after the restructure year (which was 2021 even though it should have been 2020) it should have given us the ability to dump him or make him an UFA like the situation with many others (beasely, Addison, Butler, etc). The restructure essentially gave star leverage for 2 more seasons which seems pointless in terms of the restructure in the first place. Like others have said, this was clearly Beane's worst deal here in Buffalo but also one of his first so it is what it is.... -
Well this would suck, but it's probably a safe bet this team is drafting at least one interior oline in the draft anyway within the first 3 rounds.
