Bills Player Releases and Restructures--New League Year Begins 3/12/25
jahnyc replied to jahnyc's topic in The Stadium Wall
Doesn't look like there are many options on our roster for outright release to free up significant cap space, other than Miller. Wondering if the Bills are trying to get Milano to reduce his cap number. Not suggesting the Bills do this, but if the Bills cut Milano with a post June 1st designation, it would free up almost $10 million (cutting him now (i.e., pre June 1st) would negatively impact our cap situation). Edwards, if released now, would free up about $4 million in cap space. Milano and Edwards would be my two surprise cuts, but I hope neither are released. -
Bills Player Releases and Restructures--New League Year Begins 3/12/25

I have not seen many restructures or roster moves disclosed for teams so far, certainly less than I would have expected at this point. I would think teams need to know what kind of flexibility they will have to sign free agents with the negotiating window opening on Monday and then needing to be cap compliant by Wednesday. -
And now for your TMZ Topic of the day, Josh and Hailee, May 31st

I wonder if Dion was supposed to spill the beans. -
The Bills will need to be cap compliant by 4 pm (ET) on March 12th. At this point, we have the release of Sam Martin, the non-tendering of Quintin Morris and the apparent conversations with Miller regarding his situation for 2025 and a possible compensation reduction. I am surprised that we have not heard about any restructures, which must be coming to get under the cap, although there seems to be limited options for player restructures this year outside of Allen, Dawkins and Oliver. I think there may be some surprise releases and players accepting reduced compensation before Wednesday. It has been too quiet.

Understood, but do we need Coleman if we trade for Metcalf? Overall, would it be better to trade Coleman and use the draft pick or draft picks that would have been part of a trade for Metcalf on defense (in a strong draft for D-line, probably our biggest need)?
-
I would trade Coleman for Metcalf. Our WRs would be Metcalf, Samuel and Shakir. I would re-sign Hollins and draft a WR in the late rounds.
-
Seems that a big requirement in our offense, particularly on early downs, is for the WRs to block (I assume this is why Cooper was not on the field all that much after he was acquired and separate from his wrist injury). If Metcalf would be close to an every down WR because he also blocks, bring him here.

NY Post has a story about Diggs suing a reality star (Mia Jones — also known as Mulan Hernandez (no idea who she is)). He alleges he was a victim of an extortion attempt and threatened with ‘deadly weapon’ by Jones. Sounds messy.

Surprised that they are meeting with more safeties than CBs. Would think that FS can be filled through free agency rather than in the draft. Understand that these combine meetings do not indicate much, but CB seems like more of an overall need than safety (although safety definitely is a need).

What McD and Beane have shared about Coleman seem to go to things that none of us are privy to, such as attitude and work ethic, which could be things like how diligent he was with rehabbing his injury to timely attendance at team or WR group meetings and overall game preparedness and focus. We just don't know, but I think it is that kind of stuff, which is completely in his control.
-
Interesting that we don't seem to have a lot of flexibility in terms of player releases to improve our cap situation. Seems like a year where we are going to need to rely heavily on restructures and potentially a new contract for JA to provide some cap space.
-
Need to hear from Beane about all this and see what the FO approach will be (i.e., if the Bills are willing, beginning in March, to negotiate a new deal for Cook). I don't think Cook will have strong trade value for the Bills given his salary demands and how RBs are currently valued. If the Bills try to negotiate or enter into an extension with Cook, it will be interesting to see how that impacts the approaches taken by Shakir, Benford and Bernard with their contract situations since they are similarly situated to Cook (free agents a year from now unless extended or tagged). If Cook gets an extension by being the squeaky wheel, why wouldn't they do the same, particularly since they have received less money than Cook over their first three years because they were drafted in lower rounds.
-
I agree that there would not be a market for a trade (but would be if he was released at some point). I think the better bet will be that Beane asks Milano to restructure his contract by reducing his comp.

Shakir, Benford, Cook and Bernard: Who Gets a Contract Extension?
jahnyc replied to NoName's topic in The Stadium Wall
Shakir would be my first priority, but that is a big number. Benford has been great, but as others have noted, if we move to more more of a man scheme, I am not sure he would be as valuable to the defense. -
For first round picks, Erik Flowers and Booker Moore were really bad.
-
I don't think we would get a great return in a trade for Cook. Salary demands and the undervaluing of running backs will depress what we can get for him. Possible solution may be that he plays out his fourth year and we agree to not tag him (but leave the window open to negotiate a new deal). Franchise tag for Cook for one year would be too high and detrimental to our cap situation in 2026, so I don't think we would lose much.

Anyone on the Bills you think could be traded?
jahnyc replied to KentuckyBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall
Isn't Knox more of a complete TE? Can Kincaid block? -
Really don't think Coleman will ever make us understand why the Bills took him over Worthy and others in the draft. I hope I am wrong.
-
Fangio is MVP so far.
-
Wasn't DeJean a second round pick? Could have had him instead of Coleman.
-
Getting Garrett would be great, but I think we need a lot more on defense (two safeties and a starting CB).
-
Both defenses seem to have a lot more overall speed than the Bills defense, particularly in the secondary. Our safeties and CBs are slow comparatively. Makes a difference when plays go wide. DeJean would have been such a superior pick to Coleman. What a shame.

What Position in Free Agency Puts Buffalo Over the Top?
jahnyc replied to BuffaloBaumer's topic in The Stadium Wall
We have significant needs on defense. You can justify a point of view that we need starting level players at the following positions: DE (especially if Miller is not back), DT (Jones' play has declined and he is getting old), CB (Elam is a bust and Douglas' is a FA and his play declined this year), and safety (Hamlin is a FA and Bishop is a bit of an unknown at this point). The most significant hole on offense is at WR. Shakir is great, but we need help at WR, particularly with Cooper being a free agent and doubts that Coleman can develop.
