Ryan O'Halloran - Bills should go Defense Heavy in draft
DapperCam replied to BCAS Baritone's topic in The Stadium Wall
For the people saying “draft 2 WR in the first 3 rounds and then defense the rest of the draft”. That isn’t really going to cut it as far as filling holes on the roster. You hope your first and second round pick get some starter reps. The rest of the draft usually doesn’t even play. How many snaps did Dorian Williams, Bernard, or even Basham play their rookie seasons? Almost none… It’s going to have to be defensive picks in the first 2 rounds, or bottom of the barrel free agents. -
The metrics on offense for the playoffs would look stellar. Likely top 3 in all categories for efficiency and maybe volume. The defense would look very mediocre.
-
My point is, if he were calling the plays in KC that would have made him a stronger candidate for HC jobs. I think the goal for 95% of these guys is to eventually become an NFL head coach, so they will take whatever career path gives them the best chance.
-
It’s speculation on my part, but we’ve seen Pegula meddle multiple times to buy high price tag free agents on the Sabres (Leino, Erhoff, Taylor Hall, etc). It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Terry was saying “buy! buy! buy!” and Beane felt like he had to go along with it. Obviously he isn’t going to ever blame ownership publicly, so we wouldn’t know. Even in this interview he said the Pegulas want to win, and it’s a balancing act.
-
I’m sure it hasn’t been stated explicitly, but a coordinator position with play calling responsibilities is definitely above one without. Look at Bienemy, couldn’t get a HC job because everyone knows Reid actually ran the KC offense. He had to make another lateral move to the Commanders.
-
Considering the Bills could have probably retained him by promoting him internally to the semi-vacant DC position, they probably weren’t too sad to see him go.
-
Maybe he makes a positive impression and he gets a real crack at it when our next OC inevitably leaves for a HC job somewhere in 2.5 years.
-
Maybe he told McDaniel what he really thinks about him, lol.
-
Pegula got so lucky with Beane, McDermott and most of all Allen. He is an incompetent sports owner.
-
He fell off a cliff statistically. The final 10 games of the season he had 1 TD and 1 game over 75 yards. And the eye test was bad as well. Way more drops than usual, not getting separation, and not fighting back for the ball. I hope you are right, but something was up and it wasn’t just the change in OC. I’m crossing my fingers for injury that he can recover from.
-
Maybe it is a little bit on Allen too in that situation. I know it is a lot to ask considering everything he has to do, but he really needs to know where Jones is lined up on any given play and assume he is going to win his rep. If he assumes Jones will beat Dawkins, then his internal clock would be a little bit quicker there.
-
Except when golden child Mahomes needed bailed out to extend the drive at the end of the game 😅
-
Dorsey’s play designs were trash. I hope we get a better OC in here that can scheme players open even if the other team goes super passive.
-
I don’t know how much he will command, or how we will fit him under the cap, but we have to find a way to re-sign D. Jones. He was the most important player on defense this year and he wants to stay in Buffalo. Please find a way to make it happen Beane! I would rather that than try to get middle of the road WR free agents. Go youth there.
-
I hope he gets a huge payday somewhere else. And if he signs in the NFC, I’ll even hope he lives up to it.

What realistic coaching changes do you expect?
DapperCam replied to BigBadBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Special teams was a major factor in the Bills losing a few games this year (at Jets, at Eagles, DEN, KC, very nearly at LAC), and was a major factor in the Bills winning one game (at MIA). I would hope they would at least look at that and figure out wtf happened there from a management perspective. -
I think expectations any given year for a great team should be making the Divisional round. Football has too much luck, which combined with single elimination sends great teams home. I would say the Bills actually accomplished pretty much exactly what their preseason expectations were. However, the fact that there are no great teams this year does make it feel like a missed opportunity. The Chiefs and Bengals from last year were better than any team in the AFC this year.
-
Does that even save us any cap in this scenario? Pretty sure we have to eat it no matter what.
-
Allen’s playoff stats per game over 10 games: 24/37 - 65% 272 passing yards 2.1 passing TDs 0.4 INT 100 passer rating 8 carries 56 rushing yards 7 YPC 0.5 rushing TD 0 lost fumbles 0.1 receiving TD ——— And that is with a terrible Bengals game dragging down the averages. The fact that we haven’t made the Super Bowl with that kind of QB consistency is nuts.

I’m fine with the idea of a fake punt in that spot. Especially since I don’t think we’ve run one in years. But the execution was terrible. Hamlin was motioning weird before the snap, which tipped that something was up. Then the play itself never had a chance. Basically if you are going to call that play there, you better have a flawless implementation and execution ready to go, which they obviously didn’t.
-
I think he’s fine, and not really a problem with our defense. Considering where he was drafted and his cost, he’s performed adequately. I kind of hope he doesn’t have a monster contract year, so we can retain him affordably and have stability at that spot. In fact, I would extend him this off-season to an affordable deal if I were Beane.

Would the Bills have beaten the Ravens?
DapperCam replied to Dan Darragh's topic in The Stadium Wall
Our defensive scheme seems to do well against Lamar Jackson. I think we would have had a chance. Defense would have been a week healthier as well.
