Not sure I've seen more hyperbole in NFL fandom history than calling a perennial top 5-10 WR washed after a 1200 yard 8 TD season - all because he didn't light up the stat sheet directly corresponding to a change in coordinator. His "washed up" season was the 12th best receiving total in Buffalo bills history by raw yardage, 18th best in YPG, and 11th (T) in TDs.

I fully expect him to have an equal or better season next year, outperforming any receiving we draft.

I get you’re a big Diggs fan but you have to acknowledge his fall off that coincided with the new OC and the Bills resurgence. This transformed version of Diggs demanded targets at the expense of the team’s fortunes. When the game plan featured more run game and spreading the ball around to Shakir, Kincaid and Cook, the Bills won 6 of 7 and the division. He looked like a tentative shell of his former self in that KC game and dropped the potential game winner on a perfect throw. Then proceeded to be a me first distraction, putting himself before the team that was paying him a fortune. It’s small wonder the Texans converted his deal to one year and we’ll see what happens. His lack of appreciation for this fanbase that embraced him is not the look you’d expect from a classy HOF type player.

Sutton could help the Bills for sure. The Bills can’t fit him under the cap so that’s moot. He is a vertical player like Davis, not a guy who can uncover quickly like Diggs. They are totally different types of WRs so, no, Sutton isn’t a “younger Diggs”.

Diggs is not the same guy he was and the drama coupled with his monster contract made him expendable. Sutton could be shoehorned into the cap with some Beane slight of hand magic if they really wanted him, but you’re probably right with the idea of getting younger at the lead receiver position.

  3. Allen knows Diggs is not a top 10 receiver anymore but he’s become a constant distraction with demands for targets and attention. He’s outlived his usefulness in Buffalo and he needs to play elsewhere. I loved Diggs and appreciate his role in Josh’s development and putting us in the hierarchy of the league but we’re ready for a younger, more dynamic playmaker.

He’s not remotely the same kind of WR as Diggs. He’s a better Gabe Davis.

Diggs is  a possession receiver now, that looked tentative in the playoffs and couldn’t make a tough catch in the biggest spot of our season. He’s a diva and malcontent and has 3 years of mileage more than Sutton. He lacked the fire in the 2nd half of the season that has defined his Bills career. At less than half of what Diggs cap hit is, he’d be a solid addition.

2nd? I’m proposing to spend no more than a 4th which should get it done ..

Normally Beane spends his 4ths moving up 2 spots when he gets anxious waiting for his turn

When was the last time in 40 years that the Bills got a quality player for a 3rd or a 4th rd draft choice. It’s a pipe dream. The only reason the Texans got Diggs for a 2nd was because we couldn’t look at him anymore no less pay him.

He can come here and earn a new deal…

in the meantime play out the final two years on the old deal

    2nd? No way …

    4th would get it done

Who are the game changing 2nd rounders we’ve trotted out there. Any Sutton’s in the bunch. These teams without quality QBs need receiving. You have to give to get. The Redskins in the 70s with George Allen used all their draft choices to get quality vets. They got to  SBs and  were in the NFC championships with zero draft contributions.

Nobody is giving San Fran anything close to that with a loaded WR class starting them right in the face. They either gotta pay him or take a deal somewhere on middle ground.

If you like Aiyuk better than the quality of receiver available when you draft and he fits your offense, the #28 will not impact your team next season as much as an established top receiver. SF won’t move him unless they can get a good offer like a late 1st rounder.

No. It's a 2nd next year and some change or no for me.

Here’s the thing, vertical threat receiver is our biggest need. If you trade up for a guy of Aiyuk’s caliber ( probably somewhere in the mid teens to low 20s) you’re giving more draft capital than #28. Probably #28, 58 and our #2 next year minimum. I think Ayuk would flourish in a Josh lead offense. He was really productive with the noodle arm QB in SF.

    Matt Milano.

The all pro best LB on the roster, whos replacement was already drafted.  Would it be crazy for them to trade him now on an attempt to move up? Possibly.

But he has had some availability issues over the years. And the negative is him coming off a knee injury, but otherwise this would be a perfect sell high moment.

If a team was willing, it would be perhaps the best way to move up without sacrificing a boatload of future picks

That’s perfect, trade our best defender because he was injured. Great way to attract FAs. Milano’s value is more as a veteran leader with Hyde,Poyer, White , Phillips, Lawson all gone. Milano is a top 5 OLB. He allows us to play defense with 2 LBs in Sean’s system.

  10. I like Knox, but he’s got to show some pride and become a factor after being extended. Kincaid has become a top tier TE after his rookie year. Knox has speed, size and toughness but he has not established himself as a productive option. This is the year, when Diggs’s targets are gone and the TEs will be a bigger part of the offense. Time to show up.

  11. Bass should be on a short leash starting with training camp. He had confidence issues and was an abject failure down the stretch and in the playoffs. We can’t allow this position to be a question mark because it will compromise our entire offense. He can’t get by with his performance 3 years ago. I personally think once a PK loses confidence he’s gotta go. Sean and Beane want to show patience fine. It can’t be excused if the signs continue.

  12. We need a db to backup Elam because he hasn’t proved anything going into year 3. A safety for sure and a dynamic KR. Since Hines  we haven’t a real flip the field threat. Perhaps the 2nd receiver we draft can provide that. An young edge rusher who could drop back in coverage would be a luxury that would pay dividends.

  13. They will miss Diggs until the Diggs replacement gets a solid chemistry with Josh. Then the #1 receiver position will be better with a vertical component. The Samuel replacement value for Davis  will be a net positive immediately with a gadget and screen option and more speed and elusiveness.I feel the O -line will be better with youth and size improvement at center and Edwards being a wash with McGovern at guard. Harty, Siran Neal were good ST players but easily replaced. Murray’s carries will go to Ty Johnson. The safeties will be missed for the leadership if nothing else. The loss of Dodson and Jackson should have minimal  effect with Milano and Edwards on the field. Settle, Lawson, Phillips were journeyman at best, no big deal with the addition of Johnson and a drafted DT. All things considered, by mid season we should be better than last year.

  14. Beane will trade up for a Wideout because the trade of Diggs netted us a fat zero for the 2024 season and a huge hole in the receiving corp.. I refuse to believe that he couldn’t have gotten a better offer after the draft or after June cuts. Why couldn’t we have demanded a starter from a team that was willing to pay 20million for a top ten receiver. We’ll see how our roster gets constructed going forward but you can bet Beane needs a top tier receiver in the draft.

  15. Don’t be surprised to see the O-line be better with Torrence, Brown in their 2nd season together and McGovern and Edwards being better than Morse/ McGovern combo. I believe Cook and Johnson will have great numbers rushing the ball and Samuel being the best gadget and dump off player we’ve had. With one or two impactful receivers from the draft, our offense will be hard to deal with.

  16. We all realize how great Josh is, but until he gets to the SB critics will poke holes in his ceiling and his elite status compared to Mahomes and Burrow. He’s arguably the most exiting and visually transcendent athlete who ever played QB. His arm talent and elusive ability to avoid tacklers and aggressively advance the ball downfield with an indestructible nature is unmatched in the annals of NFL history. He makes Bills football a must see sports watch. He’s converted marginal fans to die hard Bills fans. Finally, he takes responsibility for anything negative that happens to the team. He always gives credit to teammates and coaches for winning and bleeds internally with losses. When I watch games with 3 generations of my family and friends who are so invested in Josh and this team’s fortunes, I realize how lucky we are to have lived during his career.

  17. You have to factor in the Reid/ Veach superiority over Sean/Beane which has given both roster and game day decision making advantages to Mahomes. Mahomes has a slight talent edge through the first 5 years of their respective careers but Josh could have had one in the 13 seconds year if Sean didn’t undermine him. It’s very difficult to judge.

I'm just gonna keep posting this anytime someone brings up that game....

Several factors contributed to the loss

    1) 13 seconds

    2) they had all three time outs left

    3) they had Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill

    4) some Bills players and coaches were already celebrating on the sidelines like the game was over

    5) they only needed a FG to tie and go to OT.

Sorry, no excuses for the soul crushing, mindless coaching that set the stage for the poor tackling and coverage we had all game to give KC life in OT. You Kick the ball inbounds  taking 5 seconds off the clock. You can’t allow Hill or Kelce to get free releases with 13 seconds, even if you tackle them at the line or hold. I’ll trade 5 yds for 6 seconds in that scenario.Their other receivers couldn’t get them into FG position and if they did I could live with it. Sean and the DC decided, , inexplicably to protect the sidelines and leave the middle of the field open. The TOs didn’t factor in because there should have time for 2 plays and a Hail Mary. Sean knows he blew it playing soft zone and letting Hill do his thing with the toreador tackling and defender deployed on the sideline. Every time I think of it I want to throw up.

My bias against McDermott is well documented.

Wondering how others view his post-season PC and recent interview calling critics narrow minded. He also stated its hard to win in the NFL. I recall a prior HC pilloried on this site for saying the exact same words.

My take on the PC was that he was very defensive. Without even being asked. He launched into a defense of his tenure as coach even dating back to prior seasons.

And now he calls critics narrow minded for wondering if the Bills will win a SB with him as HC. You have to belive at this point the thought has crossed Beane and Pegula's mind. He's trying to defend at best status quo to perhaps taking a step or two back from 13 seconds.

Then the most ridiculous statement of all.

"We're looking for Josh to really be that face of the franchise, like he's been, and continue to evolve."

I mean WTF. What team has he been coaching? Does he think Hyde and Poyer were the face of the franchise?? Is he trying to lay blame on Allen? Without Allen McDermott might be coaching DBs in Kansas City.  Was Allen on the field when the defense crumbled multiple times against Denver,Philadelphia, and others. KC only stopped themselves in the playoff game. If not for a goal line fumble the Bills are not even close in that game.

It may not seem that I'm open minded but I really try. I've gave McDermott praise many times last year.

So what does the board think?

For those that crucified Jauron how do you take the It’s hard to win in the NFL line?

For those that defend McDermott, what do you all think?

I’m not a Sean supporter but he’s not going anywhere barring a total collapse( missing playoffs). To be totally objective, Sean saved his job with a fine performance in the last 8 games. He dumped Dorsey, installed Brady and got Cook and Kincaid involved in the offense. He acquired Douglas and got better play out of Dodson and Bernard. I think it’s realistic to expect improvement next season with more explosive skill players (Samuel, the 1st or 2nd rd.receiver and continued development of Cook and Kincaid) along with better DL play with Johnson, a full season with DQ and a contribution from Miller. I think our secondary will improve( Edward’s, a highly drafted safety and better use of Rapp)  The players love the guy and play hard for him. He should be commended for being bold enough to hold Josh accountable. We need Josh to have a strong HC and not have a yes man. Now some of his game day decisions have been mind blowing but hopefully he improves.

  20. Established pass rushers are unavailable in FA  to cap challenged teams but there is no reason not to expect more pressure and sacks from Miller, 2 years removed from knee surgery and Rousseau/ Epenesa could have more production. Pressure from the tackles should be as good as last year or better with Eddie, DQ and Adrian. Defense should not be a problem if we stay healthy.
