  1. A large majority of 17th century, 18th century, 20th century and 21st century immigrants have also come to the US for economic opportunity. They weren't the huddled masses in the poem - that would have been the poor.
  2. The actual immigration numbers are higher today then they were back then. The Great Wave of Immigration (1880-1924) averaged 584k a year. From 1966-1989 the average was 507k. From 1990 til today the average is about 1 mil. Percentage wise - of course the number in the past were higher since the country has grown quite a bit in the past 100 or so years.
  3. No the definition of yearning is: A persistent, often wistful or melancholy desire; a longing. You can have a yearning for opportunity, a yearning for wings, etc. The huddled masses were yearning simply for freedom.
  4. Illegal immigration and legal immigration are 2 different things. Ellis Island is where people legally came to this country, signed their names and became Americans. Illegal aliens should have no benefits afforded to them.
  5. "Yearning" doesn't mean "can afford to". And that line does not have to do with financial freedom.
  6. I would love to become a congressman so I could get those great health and retirement benefits.
  7. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" I guess we need to add a line: "On the other hand, screw them all. I want what's mine."
  8. First - you can barely see that they are different characters now. Second - they look bad enough as figures but will look even worse as animation.
  9. In the united states of walmart? plastic trinkets.
  10. If that donut hole system makes you happy with pushing the ceiling up higher then good enough. If I were in office I'd support it. Do you want the govt to have a higher SS tax rate for people who make less than 90k? In 2000 the ceiling was 76k - it will continue to move up over time. I'm just suggesting that the govt bump the maximum earnings subject to SS taxes at a quicker pace.
  11. I thought this was the SS thread. Guess I'll go to the aids thread to talk about SS.
  12. I would think that the US buys more goods from china than they do taiwan - so I guess we should protect china.
  13. The easiest way to help keep SS strong is to raise the ceiling. Bump it up to 150k to start and over a set number of years raise the ceiling until it reaches to say 1 mil. People who make 90k are already "paying more" then say someone who makes 30k - but that is because they make more. It's not like they are also paying a higher percentage though like with income tax- it's the same percentage for 30k as it is for 90k. Of course when they retire the 90k person will "receive more" in SS payments than the 30k worker. This simple step may be too liberal for some. But I haven't even started to bring up the idea of a fixed upper limit yet! At some point in the future a top payout back to the person might have to be added. So say someone will only receive benefits back as if they paid at the 750k level even if they really did pay at the 1 mil level.
  14. I never understand how a group like opec that does not control the majority of oil production is able to control the price of oil so well by threatening to reduce their production by like only 5%.
  15. The dollar keeps getting weaker and the trade deficit keeps getting larger. Not the best combo deal.
  16. And the thinking on the other side of the fence goes: The difference is that on the Left, the extremists have a voice...a somewhat strong voice, but are on the fringes of the party. On the Right, the extremists now ARE the Party. Funny how everyones reality differs so.
  17. Maybe they can pass a law saying everyone has to go to sunday school also.
  18. Erie county just should have withheld paying for medicaid.
  19. If americans ate more melon they wouldn't be so fat.
