This is just another example of why it is not a good idea for one party to be in control of all the branches of govt. No matter what good intentions they had when they started the power will corrupt.

People have their opinions and nothing will change them. Some issues might have a chance to change people's minds, some issues never will. Just get the case to the supreme court and have them quickly say that they agree that the tube should have been removed. Like it or not, that is what the final outcome will be.

I'm all in favor of many things mentioned here - flat tax, federal sales tax instead of income tax, less govt, privatizing programs where you can. But anyone here who thinks the common individual taxpayer will be much better off financially is kidding themselves. Take away the tax breaks / govt subsidies and everything goes up. Perhaps that gallon of milk without subsides would be $6. Perhaps without tax breaks to oil companies that gallon of gas goes up to $4 (would have been $5 but the taxes we pay go away also.) Then there are things that can't go away - the military, the basic 3 branches of govt, the court system, etc. Maybe there are things people don't want to see go away - like federal highway money (imagine paying a toll on every road), nasa's plan to go to mars, whatever. Many programs exist to support people who cannot support themselves to "promote the general welfare". They might be privatized and you might be able to opt out if you don't need it but is the general welfare of all citizens still being met? I wish reality was as simple as we sometimes make things out.

You mention that your privatization plan would be done in stages with current benefit receivers continuing at their current level. So your plan also needs billions of additional dollars to make up for the money that is being taken away when our money is privatized, correct? Do we just add that money to the deficit? Do we increase income tax? Do we cut out another federal program which falls to the states so our state taxes go up? No matter what "positive" we gain will be offset with some negative. Don't take this as me wanting the status quo. I just want to point out that we that taxpayer will foot whatever "improvement" occurs.

Sorry - you are incorrect. As you know - mental illnesses include schizophrenia, mood disorders (such as depression and bipolar disorder), anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and eating disorders. Perhaps stupidity can be a symptom of a mental illness but it is not an illness in itself. But I do hope Pfizer comes out with a pill for stupidity - a lot of us here could use it!

Right - so technically she is not brain dead since her brain is still working for those uses. Also at this point does it matter what her wishes were? If her higher order brain does not function then what made her "her" no longer exists. All that is left is a body. On the suicide issue - a person can commit suicide by starving themselves to death. Since assisted suicide is illegal how can you deny food since then you are assisting suicide?
