These guys (JP) are not China dolls....if he cannot get over a sitting down then we have more problems than we thought....I don't think it will matter one bit to this kid...if anything it will fire him up at his next opportunity. We both agree to 'protect' him when JP goes back in...but you wish to avoid certain opponents...I wish to do it by not asking him to pass the ball 32 times/ game...which was the pace against the Saints...

Going to the game Road Block set up
jahbonas replied to Hammered a Lot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What road block?? are there others? -
Why are all the articles written surround the switching of JP to Holcomb when its not the root problem ??? We have to go to a veteran Holcomb because our offensive coordinator is calling a game that puts the burden on a QB and passblocking line rather than on a big Running back and runblocking line ! Has anyone in the media gotten a clear answer from Clements other than Mularkey partially acknowledging we might want to run more??? That should have been deicded in March & April...not game week !! The rookie qb is not the problem...its the rookie offensive coordinator....TD certainly did not acuire a Bennie Anderson for his pass blocking ability The real difference between Buffalo & Cincinnatti ?? Its not how they handled QB Carson Palmer....its that their owner decided to PAY the head coach a respectable wage...we did not and Marvin Lewis told us to go give our low ball offer to a lesser coach...we did...Greg Williams....and we got exactly what we paid for !! Ralph....please take your self-imposed salary cap off the coaches and GM's.... We won't mention the GM staff thats now in San Diego and are there because you were paying Butler the 3rd lowest salary in the league as GM despite 10 of 11 trips to playoffs prior....

Ya Coughlin kept faith by not even trying to start Manning....but the veteran Kurt Warner did not deliver so he 'found faith' in Manning. Also in NY Chad Pennington never started a single game until year 3...and when he came in he did very well - so apparently QB's can do get better year to year by grasping the playbook and getting numerous reps in training camps and preseason. If Holcomb does not win these 2 home games he will be back on the bench and we will truly be in a build for next year mode and JP will be right back in there. Hoever if we win these next 2 games we are 3-3 and likely at the top of what appears nw a pretty weak division. I like JP a lot..and feel the real problem is the play calling of Clements who calls a game requiring a Qb to win the game rather than a RB....as long as he continues to do that then lets put a veteran in there.

All last year Big Ben attempted 20 passes per game....this year thru 3 games its the same 20/game...Clements had Losman attempt close to 28 attempts each game. That is THE problem. Someone inform Tom Clements he does not have a Jim Kelly/Shaud Williams combo in his backfield...he has more similar to 1973 OJ Simpson with rookie QB Ferguson in his backfield. (Fergy attempted 11 passes/game that year). Clements is the true rookie here in his 2nd year as an OC...making the classic mistake of being so wound up in his gameplan that should work but never accounting for the players/skills asked to execute the plan. Ofcourse all this poor coaching (both our coorinators and head coach are doing their jobs for the 1st time) is due to the fact Ralhp Wilson has a self imposed SALARY CAP on his coaching staff...well Ralph that cap lost you Marvin Lewis and got you Greg Williams and Mike Mularkey. We got exactly what ralph paid for..a low paid staff.

Play calling and coaching in general.....
jahbonas replied to sven233's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly right !!!! blame Clements !!! Last week you should blame Clements & that idiot Gray who insisted on blitzing the most mobile qb in the history of the league... we cannot afford to have our staff lose games !!!! -
Thwere was a reason why Clements was run out of Pittsburgh....he played too much CFL type gadget football...run it run it run it...

Mularkey Hates The Run, Lives For Gadget Plays
jahbonas replied to Mark VI's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is no Qb controversy...the controversy is what type of offense Clements is going to run....an offense built around a big RB or behind a QB ???? It was assumed all offseason this team would be built around running/defense & special teams. Its getting easy to see why Clements and Mularkey were escorted out of Pittsburgh. They have no idea how to play smash mouth football !!!! -
Coming off 140 yrd/27 carries performance we open the game with a 25 yard run...and afterwards insist on passing as if JP is a 6 year veteran.... Someone please inform OC Clements that we have a joe ferguson/oj simpson type situation here......Clements is calling a great game if Dan Fouts is the QB and Shaud Williams is the RB.... Its just incredible that Tom Clements can be so out of tune with what was the designed philosophy off season....that of acquiring big OL (Anderson) and running Macgahee 30 times a game.... No young Qb could have executed what was asked of JP today.....put the game on the shoulders of the players who are ready for it....Willis and that big offensive line... And please do not measure a regular Running game with success/non-success of a 4th and 6 inches with 9 guys on the line...when we should have qb sneaked...
-
There was not 1 time during the game that we ran Mcgahee 2 of the 3 downs..it was constant 2 passes and 1 run.....in essence putting the game in the hands of a Young Losman against a smart quick defense...and out of the hands of the teasm;s suposed strength of mcgahee behind a big physical line. Clements and Mularkey had a reputatuion in Pitt of getting too cute and getting away from simple power football. 13 rushes for Willis is not enough
-
Our Off line is big and physical...it will not be until the 3rd and 4th quarters when their size begins to really wear opponents down.....in the preseason our line never plays that long to the point they could begin to take over. Look this year for a lot of slow 1st halfs followed by holes opening and willis putting up longer runs in the 2nd half

Listening to ESPN radio this weekend (would never get this from WGR) it was interesting to see that Louiville is ranked #7 nationally and that they likely have the 2nd bet RB in the nation. This tells us Gates was part of an unusually higly talented Louisville team and that he split time 3-ways at RB and one of them for sure is a very top RB this year. Low yardage due to splitting time but coming from a team on the rise..he falls to 6th rd (I thought I also heard his 40 was slow at the combine due to a bruised thigh)......either way ...it seems it not such a surprise now that Gates is indeed a talent from a talented program deep at RB

With the new enforcement last year of not touching WR's it has brought back the small speedy WR to the NFL. The bias towards bigger WR's helped allow Roscoe to slide to the 2nd round. An offense is often measured by the number of offensive players you have that can score a TD of 80 yards...prior to last season we had 1...an aging Eric Moulds. We now have 4...Roscoe, Moulds,Evans & Mcgahee....with a strong armed mobile QB who throws well on the run. Defensive coordinators will have much to worry about.

It is 4 days before the NFL Draft with much to speculate about possible Henry trade or Clements trade and here were the topics discussed by Brad Riter on WGR Sports (supposed) programming: 1) What age is the least significant to claim that you shot your age for a golf score? 2) Do you bbq grill chicken with boneless breast or chicken with bone?? 3) Who would you rather fight..Mike Tyson or a Kangaroo ???? How the hell do these radio hosts have a job on a sports station??? These are the same morons who talked for 2 hours one night about what utensil could you do without the least for life..a spoon a fork or a knife ?????? These are the type of topics you discussed with your pals at a sleepout when you were maybe 12 yrs old.......

Yes (for arguments sake) I do assume that a CB we select with Redskins pick would be a starter....thats very typical. Clements and winfield were both selected in the 20's and came in and started. Tell me the last CB to bust who was drafted top 10 ??
-
This is not just about 2005...but this team is prepared to make a nice 4 year run with young talent like Evans, macgahee,Losman under contract as a core. Clements will be here for 1 of the 4 years....if we are able to obtain a #1 and grab a CB to replace him...thats a top 15 draft pick that we would have for the next 6 years. Its a no-brainer...and allows us to secure the rest of our veterans under the cap. Where would we be now if we had done the same with Winfield?? We'd now have a 1st rd draft pick in their 3rd year contributing...instead we allowed winfield to play his final year on an 8-8 team...if he was gone we'd have had a rookie corner on that team now entering his 3rd year. Take your choice...Clements for 1 year or some top rookie for 6??? We made the poor choice with winfield and chose to take winfield for 1 year...we'd have been far better off had we traded winfield like we should do so now with Clements
-
And they will both be gone next year for ZERO compensation. Players with a year left on the contract we should attempt to sign or else trade for best value..... We would have been furhter ahead if we had traded Winfield for a #1 before his last year...its smart move to do so
-
We'd be happy to pay Nate Clements $11million next year eating up 15% of the cap??? And Nate is top 5 CB in this league now?? We differ on this...no way we are happy to pay that...not with all the Bills players we will have hitting free agency next year. Look at TD's past in Pittsburgh...he typically does not thro 15% of his cap at 1 player....thats why i am saying...deal Clements when he has very high value...right now... I think Nate got to the probowl as an alternate...how does that make him top 5??
-
Its not so easy to do...otherwise we would have tagged & traded Winfield....or tagged and traded Jonas jennings....we received ZERO in both those players leaving. I'm trying to avoid that and in doing so replace Clements with a 1st round pick. You also need salary cap space to tag & trade......tagging Clements likely puts him at $11million in cap space....you assure us that we will have that space???
-
You really think there is any possibility the Bills will sign Clements?? That we would offer him the type of signing bonus and contract that would take???? Lets establish that this is most likely....and then move accordingly...which is to acquire a #1 pick that will contribute to this team for a 6 year contract. Also..you say Winfield was not as good as Clements....ok...but look at the money Winfield was able to get....Clements likely will get more.
-
Its almost a foregone conclusion that Clements will play this year out and hit bigtime $$$ in free agency and he will be gone like Winfield. Trade Clements to some team for a #1. We could draft a CB with that #1. The question is this....would you trade 1 year with Clements for 6 years (typical 1st rd contract) with a corner drafted in rd1??? YESSSSS Obviously we could sign a lesser CB in Freeagency and use the pick on another position like LT. Our CB's would be Mcghee & #1 pick...we could easily live with this.
-
If a player is cut by the Bills..and no other team picks him up..not for that season..or for 9 seasons more...you are in essence "cut by every NFL team'...meaning nobody in the league wants you
-
I will not use where he was drafted....The evidence that Flutie would not have been drafted high I have pointed out...HE was CUT by EVERY NFL team so he went up to Canada for a decade !! He was not NFL caliber (that is not me saying it..its every team in the NFL at the time saying it)......Flutie could have come down from Canada at any time...but no takers..none..zippo...therefore he was not NFL 1st round material..in that era If some GM had done what Felser suggested..they'd have been FIRED because their qb would have been a bust of a pick...Larry ofcourse never gets fired..he just moved on to his next opinion...start Frank Reich over 1st ballot HOF QB Jim Kelly
-
I agree with you about columnists...but there are DEGREES of being wrong... How more wrong can you be than to claim Jim Kelly (a 1st ballot hall of famer) could not win a big game so start Frank Reich (a lifelong backup)...is an incredible poor judgement/opinion. And the thought to use the top overall pick in 1985 draft on Doug Flutie (who was banished to the CFL for a decade) is a joke too....
-
what cannot you read?? Felser (not me) wanted us to use the #1 pick overall on Flutie in 1985....did Felser not know that Flutie was under a USFL contract????? I'm not so sure Flutie signed with the USFL prior to the NFL draft..OR if he had that it meant he could not be drafted & signed and play for an NFL team. The USFL signed Flutie for his name/celebrity. Flutie would rather have played in the NFL than the USFL but the money was a big difference since Flutie was never going to be drafted in rd1 or rd2 (except by Felser) and the USFL was gonna overpay him for his name... Felser's argument at the time (I read his articles..did u??) ws to draft Flutie for his name/celebrity....which was exactly the wrong thing to do !!! We needed a top football player...not a celebrity...
