Exactly ! And nothing causes his defense to stay on the field more than his terrible 3rd down defensive strategy. It completely undermines the good defense played on 1st & 2nd downs... They love to blame the no-huddle but this no huddle takes its time calling its plays
-
True,,,but they also had incredible weapons....Hall of famecalibers from the Center/Guard/Tackle/Tightend/WR's Dave Dalby/Upshaw/Shell/Casper/Biletnikoff/Branch
-
Corey defensed the Dolphins well....but his typical scheme is what he did in the Giants Superbowl...defended against a 25 yard pass against a team and QB that wanted to run the clock and either run the ball or throw short dump passes. In essence...we 'gave' them exactly what they wanted.... The best coordinators understand any 1 defense is not the perfect defense for every QB and every offense....we see ourselves that Trent Edwards can look like Montana if he faces a team dumb enough to play bend but dont break against him.......you cannot defense Chad henne the same way you defense Drew Brees...yet these coordinators do this all the time....often because they are 'one trick ponies' who cannot simply slide to a modified scheme
-
I guess its a matter of taste regarding Kelso....you would rather simply here a yell and shout.....but some others (myself included) think the shouting does nothing to help make sure it does not happen again or how better to attack it next time.... Its likely you would prefer a John Madden loud smash mouth etccc instead of Bill Walsh's coaching analysis of given plays.... Either way...I like your term Perry Fool...

We are tied for 5th in the league in allowing 3rd down conversions at 44%...and thats with quality Def line play and an abundance of talent in our 2ndary Keep in mind...Fewell is the same IDIOT...who against Dallas on monday night...Dallas needed 6 yards to get into FG range and time for 1 play with no timeouts....we had his defensive backs drop 15 yards.....incredible...might have been one of the dumbest coaching moves I have ever witnessed......now we see him do similar but on many 3rd downs... If Juaron wants to use Fewells' strategy..then fine....but then dont WASTE top picks on defensive backs if all you will use them for is to run up and tackle WRs after they make an east 1st down.... This disconnect is killing us....
-
Exactly...and you almost wonder is this why Edwards can look so good in Camp because he is a dink and dunk guy playing all summer against a defense that gives away dink and dunks.... Perry...adjust your defensive strategy to the talent you face on a given week... Belicheck always takes away what it is you prefer to do....then takes that away as best he can
-
I see Perry blames the linebackers in last weeks game...when the #1 defensive problem has been his strategy that gives away 3rd down conversions like gumdrops and contributes more than anything else to the defense having to stay out there. On 3rd and 4...do not have CB's retreat 10 yards and give up an EASY 3rd down conversion. Mark kelso commeneted at halftime this would be the #1 halftime adjustment to make....then had to comment in the 3rd qtr that incredibly the CB's of Buffalo continue to retreat constantly..... We have a quality defensive line this year (6th in the NFL in sacks)...often resulting in 3rd downs and 4 or less.....but then this strategy of retreat submarines all the good work done on the first 2 downs and gives away a 3rd down conversion. This strategy is not too different from Walt Corely used to do...and ironically the strategy works well when playing a dan marino or drew brees who wish to push that ball down the field rather than dink and dunk. However...the major mistake is treating a Chad henne like he is Drew brees....The dolphins had a young QB and power running game...the entire game was going to be played in the first 6 yrards of scrimmage..either runs or short safe passes....instead of mobbing that area with numerous defenders....we retreat backwards and defend the 20 yard pass that is never going to come....Henne loved taking the easy short pass conversions...building up his confidence.. Why does Miami not hesitate to play their rookie CB up on Lee Evans...yet we cannot play our top CB up on their mediocre WR? the retreating from the line of scrimmage by our LB and CB;s is killing us.... Another stat for Fewell...your defense is #2 in league in # of penalties and #1 in defensive penalty yards Hey Juaron...how does this mix with Bobby April's unit leading the league in penalties for special teams??? There is talent on this team (unlike 3 yrs ago)...but its undercut by this staff...

this IS whats wrong with the offense
jahbonas replied to bbillyfootballcoach's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When the kid has time he is fine....we completely fired the line protecting him last year. Now this year's replacements are young and learning. Edwards had time in games 1 & 2 and produced. In game 3 the Saints gave the defensive coordinator the game ball for complex Blitz packages that our offensive coordinator (not our QB) did not have a blocking scheme to counter it effectively. Its nice to talk about looking off WR's and going to the 2nd & 3rd option....the problem for ANY Buffalo Qb the last 5 years has been he rarely has the time to do so ! -
Greggo wanted Brees in the 01 draft
jahbonas replied to bills_fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We could have drafted Joe namath at the time and it would not matter. The common theme to none of the QB's we drafted working out is that the Bills forever had neglected drafting quality offensive lineman on day 1 of the draft - thats the common theme to poor QB play and RB's not playing to expectations. Now we sign an Off center and draft 2 Guards high and surprise surprise we are getting top QB play and Fred Jackson looks like an allpro. -
Levy Found Great Character in Whitner...
jahbonas replied to VJ91's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thats Marv TALK...but in his actions he drafted Whitner (has had more arrests than interceptions) and Marshawn Lynch.....you want character you look at this year's draft of Maybin and Wood and levitre and Byrd etccc...funny this high quality high character draft at the 'meat n potatoes' positions occurs the same year Ralph finally moved Tom Modrak up into the inner circle... Please never claim Marv drafts character when he selects Lynch with the 11th pick overall.. To clearly see these mistakes (in both talent/position and character).... 2006 8th pick Whitner.....9th pick LB Ernie Simms 12th pick DT Holoti Ngata 2007 12th pick Lynch...7th pick Adrian Peterson...11th pick LB Pat Willis 14th pick CB Darrel Reevis For a team that trades up often in the draft...we wanted a RB and LB...and right in front of us are 2 AllPro future HOF type players at those positions in Peterson and Willis.....Marv sits on his hands and drafts the thug Lynch Then in rd2 decidees to trade up and drafts the wrong LB.... (LB David Harris was picked 10 picks later) Finally this year we trade up and it works...trade up for OG/OT Andy Levitre Look at the guys this team has sacraficed extra picks to trade up for in rd1 & Rd2 Apparently guys 'we just had to have'": Traded up for: DE Ryan Denney Rd2 QB JP Losman Rd1 DT John MCargo Rd1 LB Posluzny Rd2 (2nd pick) Huge mistakes and the major reason why no playoffs.....the one bright light now is it seems Modrak is driving the car rather than sitting in the back seat making suggestions -
Signed LB Marcus Freeman (Ohio State)
jahbonas replied to HawaiiBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
From Greenbay Paper The Buffalo Bills signed the 6-foot-5, 304-pound Meredith off the Packers’ practice squad, the Bills’ Web site reported. Meredith, a tackle and guard, failed to make the Packers’ final roster and then was signed to the practice squad. The Packers drafted Meredith as a prospect with significant talent who was on the board in the fifth round in part because of concerns about his coachability. The Packers didn’t have any problems with Meredith in his five months with the team but thought he was raw as a player and apparently didn’t try to sign him when Buffalo showed interest. The Bills needed help on the offensive line because starting right tackle Brad Butler sustained a season-ending knee injury last week. In college at South Carolina, Meredith played both tackle positions and guard. -
Signed LB Marcus Freeman (Ohio State)
jahbonas replied to HawaiiBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its almost as if Buffalo obtained 2 midround picks and able to add 2 more players from 2009 draft that they liked and fit their system in OT Meredith and LB Freeman (Both were drafted in 5th rd this year) Polian often states that football more than any other sport is about the player and the system you ask him to play in - lesson being that new systems often can mean new success for given players -
It would be interesting to know the impact in this year's draft from moving Modrak from an advisory role to a place in the inner circle braintrust. Modrak has been here for awhile but had never before been given the final say on who(or what position) to choose.....this year he moves up and we see 2 Guards drafted high and our dree agent signing is an offensive center Funny how the 2 biggest talked about acquisitions were Maybin and TO....2 weeks into the season and their impact has been minimal when the real story has been the interior 3 offensive linemen and the emergence of DT Kyle Williams....thats where the game is played...and suddenly I get better play from RB &QB...and I even get a interception from Donte WHitner...

I would think the Bills would already have an updated/ prioritized list of available free agents for any position on the team Runyan would seem logical uness the Bills did not pass him physically

How does Perry Fewell escape criticism?
jahbonas replied to jahbonas's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
These hometown writers in this town must get bonuses for not placing blame where it needs to be. The defense was terrible in the last five minutes and if Turk can get fired so can the D-corrdinator I think the hometown media simply doesn't know any better (and why I am sure the Bills have zero respect for them and their questions and their theories)....Paul Hamilton has ZERO background in football - he played hockey. And its always been there - Larry felser to some in WNY is a God...and this guy stated Buffalo should draft Doug Flutie ahead of Bruce Smith with the #1 overall in 1985 (Flutie was still available in the 6th rd)....and Larry stated before the 1989 playoff game vs Browns (where Kelly threw 5 TD passes) that the Bills should start Frank Reich because Kelly was never gonna win big games for the Bills......4 AFC championship rings later.... Nice observations by Larry regarding our 2 1st ballot HOF inductees....could you have ever been more wrong? -
How does Perry Fewell escape criticism?
jahbonas replied to jahbonas's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Whats odd is I think they typically play too conservative/loose on short 3rd down conversions....but when we really needed to play a conservative 3-deep scheme across the goal line they leave a LB 1 on 1 with a TE into the endzone.... Juaron seems to play a scheme defensively that allows long drives and high % 3rd down conversions (this has ZERO to do with no huddle offense scheme).....with the thought being to await the opponent to make some type of mistake (turnover/penalty) to kill their own drive.......this may be an ok strategy when you takeover a defense with no playmakers and personnell wise are really out matched.....however we are no longer in that mode....we have multiple #1's in our secondary and have added talent to our Dline (Stroud & Maybin) and others have developed(Kyle Willaims) where we can force the issue defensively with a decent passrush and talented DB's to play tight and occasionally jump routes.... If your gonna play a drop back bend but dont break defense all the time....then why waste high draft picks on defensive players because playing off 15 yards and tackling a guy after an easy 8 yrd catch can be done by less talented DB's.... -
Cowboys game on Monday night they have no timeouts and need 6 yards for a long FG attempt and this idiot had cornerbacks play off 15 yards allowing a simple 6 yard down and out into FG range. Maybe as dumb a strategy ever seen. Patriots game with 2:12 on the clock and at Buffalo 18 yrd line. The Pats had to score on this play in order to preserve the 2 minute warning when defending the Bills - otherwise Patriots score AFTER 2 minute warning and Buffalo could take a knee and run 3 plays into scrimmage and punt the ball away with 40 seconds. Or Patriots would do onside kick. Knowing this Fewell needed to be 3 deep zone (not standard 2 deep) because we could have allowed ANYTHING to happen except a score into the endzone. We needed to rush 4...spread 3 safeties across goal line and 4 dbacks in middle zone. That score with 206 left is what lost the game even more than Mckelvin's fumble. Also his strategy of consistently dropping LB's back on 3rd and 3's is mind boggling and accounts much for why the defense remains on the field - he gives up simple easy 3rd down conversion like they are gumdrops. We have invested high picks in our 2ndary....so play them more in press....its when you have a very weak 2ndary that you play guys off the WR We run a no huddle but we often snap the ball with little time left on play clock. so this no huddle does not make this defense tired....this defense gets tired because they give up such a high rate of 3rd down conversions and thus stay on the field for a long time. Both jerry Sullivan and Paul Hamilton pointed out the defense looked tired in 4th qtr....guys prior to patriots scoring drives our offense had a 6 minute 14play drive....there was no need to be tired
-
Thanks for your response Paul Hamilton.......preseason matters little...quick questions to offensive line coach you could learn how good they thought the inside 3 were playing...or how much Kyle Willaims has improved to now give Marcus Stroud a partner in crime.......but they NEVER get such info and rely on their own naive personal opinions where none of them have any type of football background..... Its their job to find someone 'in the know' on the team who watches film to leak to them the true feelings off the record of the strengths and weaknesses of the team......instead they use their own opinion which we find once again is meaningless..... Also looks like the national press realized not to count on these local bozos either

Different View of the New O-Line
jahbonas replied to StupidNation's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Welcome to the NFL....thats typically what you get...and was far better protection than what Kelly typically saw in Superbowls.....the middle 3 of that line had a great game....on the raod against Vince Wolfolk and company....apparently you missed watching prior Buffalo games where our center/Guards were typically bith slapped into the QB's lap or our RB;s were confronted with DT pressure at handoff..... I look forward to Lynch getting runs where he can actually get the hand off and take a step before he feels pressure... -
Lets see the WGR coverage was for the Bills organization and football in general - this years draft - basically told any fan who followed the NFL draft to 'get a life' its not important - even the ESPN ratings dwarf any Sabres Versus game -NFL preseason games we are told is a joke and they never watch (even tho its their job),,,maybe if they watched some games they could have seen the quality play of the young guards NFL opener - we have Howard Simon saying he hated to watch the game because it was gonna be a blowout him and Jeremy joked about the local guy saying he would not bad mouth the Bills on the opener. Why??? because in their soul Howard is a JETS fan and Jeremy is a Giants fan who cheered when NORWOODS KICK WENT WIDE RIGHT? Why do we have to listen to their poor opinions over and over...?? Paul Hamilton - the hockey guy they have cover every practice the Bills had went a step further in saying Edwards would not finish the game because he'd be sacked so much...."oh really Paul - nice prediction".... How did ESPN national guys have it wrong? They naturally got input from the local guys who cover the team and asked for their input....garbage in garbage out.... And these local guys wonder why the Bills organization continues to blow them off.... Did Mike Shoop watch the game? or did he put his wifes panties on and watch a tennis match or a soccer game instead??

Big Ben attempted 17 passes a game when he won the Superbowl....he was "protected" by a superior defense and superior running game.... What that idiot Felser never recognizes is that in most cases the success/non-success of a QB/RB is dependent upon the quality of the offensive line In fact Larry's stupidity is never better illustrated than when he compares great Qb's and he bases it upon Superbowl wins...as if somehow the quality of the defense the QB has ,,,,has no bearing on a victory or not
-
[Lets end it right here... This "genius" Larry Felser called out in his column in 1985 that we should draft Doug Flutie rather than Bruce Smith with the #1 pick overall...how stupid was this when Flutie did not get drafted until the 7th round Really step back and think about how wrong that is...its incredible... So please...Larry Felser is NO expert....far closer to being an idiot
-
I lived in Boston for 6 years and though I hated the Patriots and Bruins I had to resepct the sports coverage they received (I listened mostly to WEII) and when I compare it to the crap on WGR..... Mike Shoop 2 hours before gametime once again telling everyone how he likes tennis more than the NFL and he says Thank God tonights game will not be on TV.....will someone just buy him a skirt and makeup kit ?
-
What comes 1st the chicken or the egg?? The Sabres/NHL is so popular locally because there has been 1 sports station that promotes the NHL far more than the NFL....please lets not try to compare the 2 sports... You indicate WGR is just 'reflecting' what the locals want....I feel they have in large part created what locals want....but also there is a big audience out there that just wishes for NFL coverage....we might be the only city in the country that chooses to use its hockey reporter (whose background is in hockey) Paul Hamilton and have him also jump over to cover football for them when hockey is not being played.... And could Paul Hamilton once get us opinions that really matter (GM's or scouts or coaches) who actually watch film instead of simply hearing Paul's personal opinion of what he observes at a practice?? How arrogant some in the media can be to think their opinion is more qualified than those who are paid and live the sport 24/7. Will Mcdonough...as good a sports writer ever and columnist...forever reminded readers they did not buy the paper to read his peronal non-professional opinion of a given team....it was his job to obtain and report the opinions of those who truly lived the game and analyzed it as part of their profession. Anything less is virtually listening to 2 high school kids argue their personal opinions about a given event.....very similar to Howard Simon and Jeremy in the mornings
