Byrd missing practice, could be game-time decision
jahbonas replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
still like to know why byrd gets rated as high as #3 safety in nfl - i love the bills and like to see them get credit...but just dont see it -
The 1979 Bills draft was always ranked higher - NFL network too often disappoints on some things. 1979 Tom Cousineau (traded for Jim Kelly) Jerry Butler (offensive rookie of the year) Fred Smerlas Jim Haslett (defensive rookie of the year) Ken Baby Johnson Jeff Nixon (nfl player of month for interceptions - injuries hurt)

Bills are coming off an impressive 41-7 win with its home opener days away - and today the entire morning was Sabres preseason talk. Only this crew can talk NHL preseason over regular season NFL. And keep in mind they have dedicated shows to the topic of meaningless NFL preseason games (but apparently the preseason games of an 80 game schedule is so important)

In that similar time frame 1976 - All pro Ahamad rashad allowed to walk over $15k and went to Vikes 1979 - Wilson loses #1 overall pick to CFL - never done before or since 1982 - Coach Chuck Knox leaves in disgust and goes to Seattle to win their 1st ever AFC West Div Title 1983 - loses 4 time Pro Bowl Joe Cribbs to USFL (led Bills in rushing & receiving year he left) ***Surprise surpise 1985/1985 we are back to back 2-14 seasons 1984 he lucks out and hires cheapest GM in football but he is Bill Polian And Ralph is in the hall of fame...and Knox is not...and Levy is.....incredible

Yep you may be right - I'd at least like to see some stunts tried - just as we see a very small amount of blitzing from a defensive team supposedly talented at DB and less talented at pass rushing
-
Did you read the post? my mini-defense of maybin is I never see him used with other lineman looping on stunts where he can run... or do you think lining Maybin up 1 yard outside the OT is doing that?? I mean a loop where he loops under and finds a hole and runs up under the Center/guard where a gap may have been created

Bills will TRADE top pick next year
jahbonas replied to Chris in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Go thru NFL Draft History since 1980 and you will see its rare (1989 Aikman & 1998 Peyton Manning) when keeping the top QB selection was a better option than a trade down because: 1- sometimes both the top qb and others just below were all flops so scooping up extra picks is good 2- sometimes the 2nd and 3rd QBs were better than the first so scooping up extra picks is good 3- sometimes the 2nd and 3rd options turned out similar to top option so scooping up extra picks was good Each year the team that used the top pick overall on a QB thought they had a franchise guy Just too many times where getting the extra picks works out better.....its a good debate because you do get the Peyton manning type situation Recent History 2008 Matt Ryan (3rd overall) but Flacco (18th) 2007 Jamarcus Russel (1st) Brady Quinn 22nd 2005 Alex Smith 1st ...Jason campbell 18th 2004 Eli Manning 1st ...Phil Rivers 4th Big Ben 11th 2003 Carson Palmer 1st...Byron leftwich 7th 2002 Davis Carr 1st ...Joey Harrington 3rd 2001 Mike Vick 1st....drew brees 33rd 1999 Tim Couch 1st...Donovan Mcnabb 2nd...Akili Smith 3rd 1998 Peyton manning 1st...Ryan leaf 2nd Eli Manning - Phillip Rivers & Big Ben Mike Vick - Drew Brees next Qb at top 2nd rd -

Ted Marchibroda was never fired - he was the only quality coach Levy had and the only coach in 4 superbowl trips to be extended an offer to be head coach by another team (rest of the league knew Buffalo had the horses provided by Polian and the coaching sucked -
In another smaller defense of Maybin - the defensive coordinator only has him lineup opposite the OT and rush straight on - we never see him loop around on a line stunt where his speed and agility could be better used. Its still TBD how effective this defensive coordinator is. Maybin may not be ready for run defense- but in passing situations they need to look to get him in space more We all saw how Walt Corey did such an effective job of limiting Cornelius Bennet's sack production by only lining him up opposite an OT in 3pt stance on passing downs (something LT was never ever asked to do)

Bills will TRADE top pick next year
jahbonas replied to Chris in Syracuse's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How do you say this without even accounting for what might be offered??? In 1998 is ONE example where the top QB did indeed become great and the other viable trade down QB's were not serviceable. John Elway in 1983 was more rated than Andrew Luck and Elway did become great - but I'd have traded Elways for Jim kelly + #3 + a #1 any day of the week - these are the opportunities where you can build a team quickly.Especially this upcoming draft that seems to have multiple quality QB's -
Bills will TRADE top pick next year

Thats mainly because Jeff Ireland was unlucky in that there was no sure fire franchise player at the top of the draft that year. When there is a perceived franchise QB they come sniffing - Mike Vick & Eli Manning were both traded away Also - good chance the owners impose a rookie salary cap in the absence of an agreement -

Look to Nix's past for possible answer. TWICE San Diego traded away the top pick in the draft. First time they traded away Mike Vick and slid down 4 spots to get Ladanian Tomlinson and with extra rd2 pick received Drew Brees. The 2nd time they traded away Eli Manning and in return received Phillip Rivers, + 3rd rd pick + 5th rd pick + flowwing year #1 (Shawn Merriman) Lesson learned?? Yes its ok to trade away top QB on the board when you have numerous holes to fill. Yes you can still get a quality QB when you trade the top QB away. Buddy Nix scouting QBs does not mean he's determining who the top one is ...he's likely looking at just below that John Elway was top consensus QB in 1983 - we did pretty good scooping Jim Kelly at 14th slot.... Our best hope is to have some team absolutely covet Andrew Luck - and offer us the farm to move up to acquire him. -
best argument I ever heard regarding Wislon implementing a plan to keep the Bills in Buffalo is the following: Why would Wilson (who like his $$$ as much as anyone) bypass the profits that HE could have made so to keep a team in WNY and then allow after his death some stranger to make those same profits that he bypassed to move the team out of WNY - it does not make much sense. It does make sense for him not to announce this because he always squeezes WNY for every dime he can - that never changes. His entire legacy after he passes is consistent with keeping a team here - his actions his whole lifetime reflect it - he voted against every franchise relocation in the NFL and he himself bypassed huge profits to not relocate. I always thought he missed out on a majical moment when at his HOF induction (which was not due to any winning success but much to do with longevity and sticking up for small markets) he could have announced that he implemented a plan to guarantee the smallest market in the NFL will not lose its franchise - Canton crowd would have gone nuts and he could have stolen the show! Unfortunately Ralph even at 90 loved the leverage more than the majical moment
-
Code Monkey - its called Leverage - and Wilson has been threatening WNY to move the team for 40 years (remember the big threat to move to Seattle in 1971 unless Rich Stadium built?).... that old man will NEVER give WNY fans and its politicians a cozy feeling that their team is guaranteed to stay in WNY - never - he loves the threat too much and the squeezes he gets out of it.

Bills playing Hardball with Packers re: Lynch trade
jahbonas replied to DaveinElma's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you have not noticed ...its a different front office than the FO who drafted Marshawn Lynch... These guys have drafted Aaron Maybin, Eric Wood, Andy Levitre, Jarius Byrd, CJ Spiller & Torrel Troupe in their first 2 rounds... -
But we had all that last year and won 6 games !!!!!!!!!! The main point is where did we get 4 games worse ??? The entire league is mediocre.....
-
Good to see Ralph taking some of that $$$ saved by Schobel retiring and use it to extend a few players...
-
I think much of the incredible negativity at the national level can be traced to our own local media buddies. Do we have just 1 local media guy predicting anything more than 3 wins??? They are all like robots singing the same tune - Buddy Nix was a bad hire - who is Chan Gailey? Why did we draft CJ Soiller? on and on and on... National guys will always call the local media for their input - thus you get ESPN and Sports Ills claimong 2 win season...
-
I assumed this would begin today?? Does the NFL only publish claims that are successful ??
-
Schobel's salary was already factored in - we did not add any salary after he was released - so that money should be available for signings In the past this is where we felt John Guy failed us - not being able to identify veteran NFL players to come and and fill backup roles - lets see what happens here. My expectation is Buddy will add a few key components

Just some observations when looking at the 53

Is that you Howard Simon ???? -
I can give WGR credit this morning at least the topic is the Bills game. In listening Howard states proudly he only watches the 1st half (this from the same guy who watches preseason hockey games that dont include sabres). Whether the Bills played well or not....if you are going to speak to WNY for 4 hours on Monday - isnt it your job to at least watch the game you will be talking about??????
-
Lets hope the Bills are able to offer the money they saved on schobel and pay some salary cut casualty at a position of depth/need like offensive line - or use it to offer contract extension to a selected player. Please dont just pocket it Ralph

Who's at the practice??????????
jahbonas replied to Bill Cowher's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nader I'm sorry but your buddy is completely out of his mind in providing that detail to this practice,,,, far more fair accurate are observations based simply on the size of players or possibly players speed.. trying to say Edwards was checkdown this or that is ludicrous.... -
Few thoughts while attending the practice... First of all thank the Bills for having an open practice after not having....many football starved fanatics want it Kinda incredible you have to thank the Bills for stopping a policy of never allowing fans to watch a brief practice in june.... Lines for hotdogs and concessions unnecesarilly long....also...why charge $2/dog...this is a fan appreciation day Its 83 degress...can u offr popsicles or freeze peops rather than pizza and pretzels...its not december Can the coaching staff /admin acknowledge that there are 20,000 fans there and conduct 1 hour of practice thats somewhat geared toward entertaining fans....few 7 on 7's??? etcccc....my god its June....u can afford the 1 hour of practice time Can they acknowledge most are there to see CJ Spiller and many wish to see some plays go his way???? Showcase what u have and what many there wish to see......why is this so hard to understand???? The whole concept should be focused on a 2 hour practice focused on fan appreciation....and make the staff work within those confines....have a few more mascots? anything for kids??? Also what happened to marrying this with fans "pick a season ticket" day>???? overall...a day that was intended to be benefical to fans....in some ways ticked fans off....longer lines for concessions....no cold icecream freeze pops etccc...nothing for kids.... Please dont tell me the $4 bargain of a beverage to season tix holder was intended to make aseason tix holder feel appreciated....1 look at the long concession line had the reaction of many - f--- the freehotdog and pop if ya gotta wait 30 mins for it.... My point is....if u wanna do a nice thing for fans and season tix holders...cater to what fans need and wish to see for a gosh darn little 2 hours.....in june....do it right !!!!!! you made many of us feel like unwelcome guests....
