Problem is not many teams have the cap to pay him, which is partly why he has not been picked up since being released. Taking a guess, if he plays in 2021 it will be in the $3-5M range on a 1yr deal. Something that should also be noted is that Richardson played 70% of the snaps in the browns system while Butler has averaged less that 40% the last 2 years.
If Richardson were willing to sign for 1yr / $3.3M, which is the cap savings from cutting Butler, would you make this move?
Are there any other players you would consider cutting to make room to sign an FA?
You seriously think Tebow is anything other than a camp body? Even if he makes the team, which he won’t, it will be for vet min and a backup role. It’s not just age with Ertz it’s injuries. I feel like I’m debating with a brick wall, at least be slightly open minded.
Having a TE that can catch is always optimal. If he can stay healthy I would say he would be a significant upgrade and a difference maker.
Besides JA, TW, and SD I could make the same argument for all the other players currently on the roster.
Every team is trying to win as many games as they can...obviously. My point is that a vet TE with a low shelf life is not beneficial to a team focused on youth and continuity. Yes they need vet leadership, but most likely not at this point of their rebuild.
Swing and a miss. It has nothing to do with cap, you have a rookie QB, RB, HC, and very young team that’s going through a complete overhaul. Adding an old TE with an injury history and very questionable longevity IMO is not a move that would benefit this team long term. This is a move a team on the cusp would make.
That’s admirable but name a modern era Team other than the Pats that have had sustained success? It’s not an easy thing to do, most teams are riding the peaks and troughs. Chiefs, Rams, Saints, Hawks, Browns (trying), Bucs, Broncos.
So literally nothing we have done in this draft or off season tells me we are looking to overtake the Chiefs this year. We have improved experience wise but not through any addition. Our draft picks will likely have no impact on this season as they look to be future contributors.
Are we waiting for the cap to hamstring the Chiefs and then make our push? Chiefs and Bucs are going to be in cap hell for the foreseeable future while we will see some relief in 2 years when our awful 2019, 2020 FA contracts all come off the books.
Not what ESPN says:
Carter is an undersized back with quick feet and good top-end speed. He's decisive, explodes through the hole and strings together sharp cuts in small spaces. He's still developing as a route runner, but he has the burst to separate. Carter has soft hands and is smooth transitioning upfield after the catch. -- Steve Muench
