I really don't get it. If there was a UFL game on at 1:00 pm tomorrow, I'd watch it. On a Wednesday in October, I'll probably not remember.
-
Would you watch replacement players?
silvermike replied to billsfan89's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It seems that the current talk is for a lockout in 2011, not a strike - can management bring in scabs during a lockout? -
I wonder how low round picks do - they probably have a little more humility about their role in the NFL, and will end up quickly spending a big portion of their income and maybe settle down more with the rest - if he buys a nice house in WNY, for example.

I think it was a calculated risk on the part of the NFL. It didn't work, but it was worth a shot - and it was less controversial than their current plan to do the same thing by moving regular season games to London. The USFL failed because it was poorly managed, and the XFL attacked the NFL and lost the fight for public opinion (obviously). On the other hand, the Arena league also went bust - I'd say the odds are long.

I'm glad I know this but man, is it a slow news day around the NFL if PFT is publishing the contract details for a 6th round CB. It's not like he was a college star who got held back by an injury even.
-
It's not really a complicated story - he was drafted by the Bills, jerked around a bit, but couldn't make good on the chances he had. His contract expired, and nobody in the NFL was willing to give him a chance, so now he's trying to make good in another league. Best of luck to him, but I mean, it's not that interesting unless he comes roaring back from the UFL.

It's only logical as capitalism if Jerry Jones' goal is to drive the smaller market teams out of business. Which would only make sense if the extinction of half the league would lead to twice as many games played at the new Texas Stadium and an according share of the TV revenues going his way. This is just a badly managed corporation - and the NFL has 'franchises' but it really operates more like one company. Imagine if this was GE instead of the NFL - Jerry Jones is the head of NBC who just took out a billion dollar loan when the company is facing a general strike, and is now insisting that the rest of the company give in to all demands, thus driving Universal and the manufacturing divisions out of business. That wouldn't be good for GE, and Jones isn't good for the NFL.

There's this little section in the middle where it seems like the show premise of the show is that TO spent too much time living the high life in LA, and now he's decided to sober up and come to Buffalo to simplify his life, get married, and settle down. I'd watch that show. But most of it seems like it's just parties and drama with his publicist and the other woman there. Boring. Note: this means that I find Buffalo exciting and strippers and parties boring. That's how I roll.

Maybe the simple thing to do is compare interceptions to sacks. QBs who throw too many picks are on one end, since they get rid of the ball to soon, while the QBs who stay there too long and get sacked are willing to withstand pain. Nah, I'm going to stick with my "older than you/younger than you" split.

Honestly, I know it's going to be a long fight for a rookie cap, but it seems like the easiest thing to do is to lock rounds 4-7 onto standard contracts. How much variation are there in those things? Those guys also seem like the players who could benefit most by being under contract as early as possible. Not that there are any hold outs, but still - get them some certainty before they even take the field for OTAs.

Looking at both threads, it seems to go like this Tough QBs: Guys active when you started watching football. Pansy QBs: Guys who came into the league since. Plus all Dolphins, Patriots, and Cowboys.

Yep, that's the guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Brown_%2...ian_football%29 DT out of Simon Frasier University in British Columbia. I'm impressed.

I don't know how many of you read Advanced NFL Stats (www.advancednflstats.com), but the guy there has spent some time going over games from the past decade developing win probability, based on a similar baseball stat. Basically, the idea is that you look at the score, the down and distance, the yardline, and the time remaining and calculate how likely a given team is to win from that situation. In any case, look here: http://wp.advancednflstats.com/greatgames....=comebackfactor This is the list of the biggest "comebacks" during Bills games in terms of this stat - how low the chances were for a team that eventually overcame the deficit and won. They're not all necessarily based on being way behind - it's harder to come back from 14 with ten seconds left than from 30 with a half left, say. In any case, look over these games: the Bills lost the five most unlikely comebacks on here, and I remember each one of those games wrenching my heart out. So yeah, the Bills blow it bigger than they eke one out.

He's being sarcastic, based on all the rabid fans Stevie Johnson seems to ahve online

Have I ever told you guys how much I hate my life?
-
I will say - the player that's profiled in that article sounds like the real deal: Playing DE in a boys league isn't fooling around - she wasn't the kicker or the holder or anything. Of course, as far as the integrity of the league goes:

Steve McNair found shot to death
silvermike replied to Cornerville's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Man, I don't know what else to say, but to describe how much I hated playing against him - there's no better sign of a true, elite pro than that. RIP. -
Also, if it's selling itself as a 'fantasy' - how many men really have some fantasy about sexy ladies playing football?
-
Meh, I can get porn on the Internet. When I want to watch football, I'll stick with, you know, real football.

Does Eli Manning Deserve To Be The Highest Paid QB...
silvermike replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Giants are kind of over a barrel with Eli: he led the most memorable drive in the what, 85 year history of the New York Football Giants? However, last year was his best season, and he ranked 17th in yards, 19th in completion percentage, 20th in yards per attempt (below Trent Edwards in the last two), tied for 10th in TDs, all amounting to 14th overall in QB rating. Most of those numbers are his career bests. He doesn't deserve anything like the $15-$20M/season that they're talking about. I think he's on par with Tony Romo and Donovan McNabb. Romo's getting about $11M/per, and McNabb's at $12.5M. Both contracts are pretty new, so I'd say Eli should come in slightly higher, maybe $13-14M. The report, though, says: That's quite a bit higher, and he'll likely get the most guaranteed money in NFL history. If I were the Giants, I'd wait until this offseason to sign him. I don't think he's ever going to be able to ask for much more than that, and there's a chance that without Plax, he could really suffer this year. -
I am sick of hearing about how our coaching sucks....
silvermike replied to SKOOBY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't we know how the Bills got TO? Trent Edwards texted Russ Brandon? That seems to leave the entire coaching staff out of the equation. -
How did Gino Toretta's pro career turn out?

Spending and winnning in the NFL

It almost makes me wonder: Are even the top QBs in the NFL underpaid? Do these guys deserve more like $20M a year instead of $10-$12? -
Are too many teams trying to run the 3-4?
silvermike replied to billsfan89's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Look, it all comes down to this: In the 3-4, you're asking three defensive linemen to do they same job as four in the 4-3. That's why it's harder to staff. You can get more plays from mediocre linebackers in a 3-4 than from mediocre DEs in a 4-3, but only if you have excellent DLs. It's why Bill Parcells almost never gives up a chance to draft a lineman: his philosphy is that there are very, very few guys with the size and speed to play on the line (on either side of the ball). -
Spending and winnning in the NFL

My hunch is that there's a typo there, and the Bills' true number is $483.71M. That would lock us in at #27.
