Noncoaching Living Super Bowl Winning Head Coaches: Bill Cowher Brian Billick Dick Vermeil - 72 Jimmy Johnson - Shows no interest in returning George Seifert - Flamed out in Carolina Barry Switzer - 71 Joe Gibbs - Unsuccessful in return Mike Ditka - Um. Tom Flores - 71 Chuck Noll - 76 John Madden - He's got a job Don Shula - 78 Really, I think it's just those two guys right now. As far as other notables, the only guys without head coaching jobs with a .500 or better playoff winning percentage and are reasonably active (coached since 1995) are Marv Levy and Dan Reeves, neither of whom seem that likely to take over the job. I think we either drive a dump truck of money to Bill Cowher's house, pay the market rate for Brian Billick, or else go with a solid coordinator. You don't get too many open chances at an available Hall of Fame caliber coach.

Lynch didn't gain yardage on screens because they set up great downfield blocking. He just ran hard and broke tackles and got a little lucky. Definitely not called screens.

Edwards has regressed since Reed's injury
silvermike replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If your offensive game plan falls apart and your QB curls up in a ball muttering gibberish because JOSH REED got injured, you need a new freaking offense. -
How about "Dick Jauron" instead of "the last drive?" I can even keep the word "it" going instead of "he" , because it's clear he's got no gonads one way or the other.

A Few Thoughts About The Game
silvermike replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why they'll play Kelsay $6M per season and won't hire a coach who demands more than $3M is beyond me. I'd be fine replacing Kelsay with a street free agent if we spent his salary on a coaching staff. -
The last drive did a number of impressively bad things. It showed no confidence in our offense, naturally, by giving Trent Edwards three inside handoffs instead of plays that might help us win the game. But worse, it showed no confidence in our defense, deciding that they were utterly hopeless to prevent Cleveland from kicking a field goal and therefore deciding top priority was to run down the clock. And heck, it showed no confidence in our kick coverage team to at least give the Browns crummy field position.

Garcia plays really well in Jon Gruden's offense. Unless he comes over too, Garcia will just be a panicking old man taking snaps from Duke Preston.
-
You know, the embarrassing thing is that even though Trent blew it and had an awful game, there are other players on the team who could also reasonably be described as "losing the game for us." When you have as many holes as we do, what's the point in nailing it down to one player? We need better quarterback play, better tight end play, better receiver play, better center play, better pass rush. And above all, better coaching.
-
Without a pass rush from your down linemen, it doesn't matter what scheme you play. Every good defense in the league gets pressure with four rushers. It's the definition of a successful defense. And it doesn't matter if they're four DLs (4-3/Tampa-2), three and an LB (3-4) or some combination (zone blitz)

Without a Runnng Game a Good QB cannot Dominate

Run and stop the run. Every good team does it. -
It's not a scheme problem. The Tampa-2 is an effective defense when run correctly, the problem is we run it like sh--.

Matt Cassell accounted for 462 out of 511 total yards
silvermike replied to Willis990's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Cassel leaves this offseason, and flops terribly, Belichick will be hailed as an even bigger genius than he is already. So needless to say, I'm counting on them to have just gotten freakishly lucky with Cassel, and have him go on to great things in the NFC. -
Monday Night is "Must Win Game"
silvermike replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills have seven games left: Three division games: They have to win two (7-5) Three games conference games (CLE, DEN, KC): They have to win two (9-6) And San Francisco, who they have to beat (10-6). 10-6 doesn't guarantee them a playoff spot, but it's the only route I can reasonably see them taking at this point. We can hope for 11-5 all day, it's just not going to happen. -
Why are you a fan of the Bills? Honestly? Is it because they're an efficient, well-managed franchise? I'm not a Bills fan because of the decisions the franchise has made, I'm a Bills fan because they're Buffalo's football team. I can't promise I'll buy tickets and jerseys and memorabilia for the Dick Jauron-era, but I'm not going to give up on them.

What is the MAIN problem with the team?
silvermike replied to Captain Quint's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Run and stop the run. It's the most basic element to successful football, and we can't do it. We're 28th in the league at moving forward on the ground: a mere 90 yards per game. 3.6 yards per carry. The rushing defense is better, but still middle of the pack at best. And weigh that against the stable of superstars we've faced on the ground: Maurice Morris, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, and the Ghost of LaDanians Past. -
Yeah - you always have to turn over your special teams, but I think we've done so too quickly.

It all starts with line play
silvermike replied to Nightcrawler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We are handicapped without Schobel and Butler; their replacements are awful. And the whole thing falls apart because we don't have anyone in the middle at center. Getting benched for Duke Preston isn't a sign of confidence in Duke Preston. -
It's an easy transition. Cut Stroud, cut Williams, cut Kelsay, cut Denney, move Schobel to OLB, and spend the next six first round picks replacing those guys (a few busts in there, most likely). Then compete again in 2014.

Definitely kick there. A 9 point lead (16-7) is a two score game. A 10 point lead (17-7) is a two score game. An 8 point lead (15-7) is a 1 score game. The card says kick.

Ellis is active, and so is McCargo.

Let's see: White head coaches with NFL Experience: 8 Dick Jauron Gary Kubiak Jack Del Rio Jeff Fisher (I didn't know this; but his NFL career ended when Bill Cowher tackled him and broke his leg) Tom Cable Jim Zorn Ken Whisenhunt Jim Haslett White head coaches, no NFL experience: 17 Tony Sparano Bill Belichick Eric Mangini Jon Harbaugh Mike Shanahan Norv Turner Wade Phillips Tom Coughlin Andy Reid Rod Marinelli Mike McCarthy Brad Childress Mike Smith (did play in the CFL) John Fox Sean Payton (was a scab in 1987) Jon Gruden Mike Holmgren (drafted, did not make team) Black head coaches with NFL experience: 3 Tony Dungy Herm Edwards Mike Singletary Black head coaches, no NFL experience: 4 Marvin Lewis Romeo Crennell Mike Tomlin Lovie Smith So from the pool of ex-players, there are more than twice as many white coaches as black coaches, as opposed to the general makeup of the league, which is about 70% black. So we'd expect to see about 7 ex-player black coaches and 4 white, a rough reverse of our current situation. Also notable is how few coaches used to be pro players - about a third. As to this issue, the NFL has uncontroversially began a coaching internship program to get ex-players into the coaching ranks. Long term, that program could go a long way towards easing the racial disparity. I don't think the Rooney Rule was meant to be more than a short-term solution, although we're still in the short-term.
-
The Haslett situation is a rare case where the Rooney Rule doesn't make sense, but must be applied according to the league's by-laws. But otherwise, we've had the thing for years now. What's the worst thing that's happened because of it? Somebody had to buy Ted Cottrell a plane ticket?
