Aaron Maybin hanging with McGahee in Miami
Bob in STL replied to 1B4IDie's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He partied for sure .. but he studied, he practiced, he was a leader, and he made big plays. Maybin should not be mentioned in the same sentence with Jim Kelly. -
Aaron Maybin hanging with McGahee in Miami

I hope your wrong but Maybin sure acts like a little kid. I too would not even pencil him in to make any kind of impact this year. -
Don't know the answer other than to say we obviously could have won a few more games with a better QB who could accurately get the ball down field. Trent won't throw down field at all; Fitz will but he lacks accuracy and zip. I would rather have a Pro Bowl QB than a Pro Bowler at any other position. Very few Super Bowls are won by teams with average QBs. It has happened in the past but that is far from the norm. You cannot win with a below average QB in the NFL. Defenses are too good. Not gonna happen. I just want a solid, above average LT that is reliable, smart, big and mean. I don't know what your point is on the Bills beating Indy's JV team. It proves nothing.

I stand corrected. I sure thought he played more games than 8. But lets point out that his first two losses where in the final games of the reqular season (1990, and 1991) and he played those games with backups. He was 2-0 as a starter in the playoffs.

QB or Oline ..what really is the biggest problem??
Bob in STL replied to Buffaloed in Pa's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Come on. Last years OL was one of the worst in Bills history. Our best lineman were two rookie gaurds. If that is not a sign of weakness what is? Our best tackle was actually a gaurd and he got injured in the first game. The experience of our remaining tackles was non-existent. Our talent at tackle was a developmental project (Bell), a player we cut and recalled (Chambers), a player off another teams practice squad (Meredith), a street free agent (Ramsey), and a reject from Detroit (Scott). I won't even get into the rotating door at right guard after Wood got hurt but please recall we had 4 different starters at right gaurd. No QB could look good behind this crew. Survival was a measure of success for our QBs. -
It would be bad. Spiller looks great but we have to stop this trend. I the past 10 years we have invested 1st round picks in A. Smith, Willis McGahee and M. Lynch. Include in that list a 2nd round pick in Travis Henry. Each guy replaced the guy before him. We have also drafted Josh Reed and James Hardy in the second, not to mention Roscoe Parish. None have been worth the investment. I want to see this team invest in big, mean, blockers and tacklers. Look at our division. All three of the teams ahead of us place a premuim on lineman. All three are bigger and more physical. We have Jackson and Lynch, a good one-two punch at RB. We do not have a proven , average quality offensive tackle on our roster.

So how do you trade him with his high salary? His value is no better than a 5th or 6th. But why would anyone make that trade? Teams know he is on the bubble with our switch to the 3-4 and they will be watching to pick him up on waivers for a much better deal. Any team that gets him off of waivers is getting a steal. He is not that bad.

Do you think the Bills are done signing free agents?

Concur . We relly need some veteran depth. Hardy and Stevie are unproven. -
Missing Rings: The 1990 Buffalo Bills
Bob in STL replied to sven233's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Every time I watch that game I become more convinced that we had a far better team. The difference was not the wide right kick. The difference was Parcells and his previous Super Bowl experience. We did exactly what they planned for us to do but we did not do it with the execution needed to win. So many "almost" plays. On top of that, the best player on the field, Thurman, did not get the ball enough. I think we were better than Washingto too. -
Are we sure Bell can't be a good OLT?
Bob in STL replied to BobChalmers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
LOL. I roared at that one. -
Even as a backup Collins has hardly ever played. He is not a great backup. His career was not like Frank Rieich who went something like 9-0 as a backup for Kelly, including the greatest comeback ever. If we bring in another quarterback it should be a prospect we can develop. Move forward please.

Moratorium on this please

I'm the new GM and here is what i would like to do.
Bob in STL replied to Ball Coach's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What? No trading Kelsey, Schobel, Whitner or Lynch for 2nd round draft choices. That is the favorite move for wanna-be GMs. -
It does .. just like last year with Bell, Chambers, Scott, Meredith and Ramsey all "trying" to play tackle. We will most likely draft a LT in round one, and a RT in the middle rounds. The RT sits on the bench, Green and Meredith battle it out for starting RT. Bell backs up at LT. We have a long way to go ... why get a new QB killed?
-
Really? Most people want us to trade our players for a 2nd round pick. I am sure Polian will jump all over this one.

UPDATED: Tim Tebow, QB, Denver Broncos

Depends who is on the board when we pick at #2. It would be great to trade down from #9 to acquire am additional 2nd rounder, then do the trade with Jax. -
The Defense is Going to Struggle Big Time
Bob in STL replied to box0life's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So basically we will suck everwhere and we need about 10 new starters? I too am worried about the defense. We just don't know how the front seven will play in the new alignment. We do not have a true NT on the roster and our projected DE's have never played DE in a 3-4. We don't know how our best lineman, Kyle Williams, will fit either. Schoebel will most likely retire. Maybin is a key, I sure hope he can step up and play. I do not think that McKelvin is going to bust. However, so far I am not seeing him as an improvement over Clements, who I did not see as an improvement over Winfield. The offense has needs at QB, LT, RT, WR, RB depth, a blocking TE, and even FB. This is a ponderous rebuild. -
Going the Pittsburgh route
Bob in STL replied to billnutinphoenix's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Right on. If we can find another 4 players this year that would be amazing. A trade down might be needed to do that. The best teams have used free agency to fill holes or add a missing piece. Your core players have to come from the draft. ... and this just in ... you then need to re-sign them when their contracts are up to avoid re-drafting the same positions over and over (see Bills - cornerback and running back saga). -
If we draft a LT in later rounds he it will be developmental guy and starting him now would be as disasterous as last year with Bell at LT. If we draft a LT in round 1 you can still expect him to struggle at times. To me, Tebow is a 3rd round experimental pick, no more. Since we are not going to sign anyone significant in this draft we have to find starters in the first few rounds.
-
Jimmy Kennedy said he wanted to start --- not gonna happen in Minny. He also said he wanted to win --- not gonna in Buffalo, not this year anyway. To leave here without a contract offer is just bizzare. Means they were not on the same ground at all. He used the Bills to get Minnesota's attention.

Makes sense to build the trenches with with years draft and look for a QB with next years draft. No need to overpay for mediocre free agents right now. I sure would have like getting Wade and Kennedy though. Clearly, we are on a three year rebuild plan.
