Bills franchise question?
Bob in STL replied to clearwater cadet's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually, Marchibroda was a former HC of the Baltimore Colts before he came to Buffalo. He was a known quantity to the Irsay's. I think they knew he was a solid coach, and not a "genius". Lets not forget that Polian had no big NFL resume when he was hired in Buffalo. He is an excellent GM, one of the NFL's best ever. He builds his teams through the draft and he also has some good fortune and good timing too (Kelly and Manning). -
Whaley: The Pittsburgh Model and no Big-Name FAs
Bob in STL replied to Thurman#1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When the Bills hired crusty old Buddy Nix as their GM many in the media complained that they did not interview the best and brightest up and coming executives. Whaley was named on that list. It is comforting to have him on board right now. I fully expect he will take the reins as GM some day. -
That was a great game. Fergy playing on a bad ankle was heroic. I do think it was Fouts to Ron Smith, who was pretty much an unknown, for the bomb. Our safety, Bill Simpson, fell down on the play. Curiously, Simpson was a former Ram and a great player for Chuck Knox. He may have been waived and was contemplating retirement but came to Buffalo to help Knox. We had lost two excellent young safties that year to injuries. One was Jeff Nixon and the other was Rod Kush. I don't think Kush ever really recovered. That team was one of the best Bills team ever. Knox brought in some excellent veterans like Rossevelt Leaks, Lou Piccone, Isiah Robertson, Sherman White, and Conrad Dobler. On top of that we had many young stars like Fergy, Joe Cribbs, Jerry Butler Fred Smerlas, Jim Haslet and Shane Nelson. We had excellent corners in Mario Clark and Charles Romes. We also had Will Grant, Reggie McKenzie, Roland Hooks, Lucius Sanford, Steve Freeman, Frank Lewis, and Ken Jones. This team was good enough to win the Super Bowl. No doubt in my mind they would have beat the Eagles or whoever the NFC had. That year they won the home opener against Miami (I was there) and the goal posts came down. They won 5 straight including wins against Oakland and then on the road against San Diego. They also beat Cincinati, Pittsburgh, LA Rams, and San Francisco. The Bengals snd 49ers were one year away from their Super Bowl showdown. Our Bills where as good or better than any of them that year. I really think this team was fantastic and loaded with characters that were fun to watch.

Bills franchise question?
Bob in STL replied to clearwater cadet's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agee in principle that the line eroded but so did the top talent like Kelly, Thurman and Reed. Crafts was a bad player and the Bills were arrogant to think he could step in to replace Ballard. Fina was a solid tackle but is a whipping boy on TSW. Ziegler was a good prospect and the Bills gave up on him to soon. He started at center for a much better Giants team after he left Buffalo. Ostroski was a solid backup gaurd and center that was forced to play due to injuries to Glenn Parker and others. Don't forget that we drafted Reuben Brown and he was an excellent lineman. The neglect of both trenches has been almost bizzare but I think the biggest problem has been too much change. Chan is our 5th coach in 10 years. How many GM's have we had in that time? Butler, Donohoe, Levy, Jauron/Brandon, and now Nix. This is a recipe for disater. You want to win? Hire the best people and give them a chance to succeed. Ralph should know this. -
Good call. He was a poor player on a very good team and his poor play was so blatantly obvious.

Unfortunately we have had much worse QBs than Hobert and Johnson. Does Joe Dufek ring a bell? How about Mathison, or Marangi, or Hamden? Hobert had some good years for the Saints but was unprepared to play in his one attempt for Buffalo. He was dumb enough to say so and that got him cut. Mike Williams was a RT, not a LT, and he was not even close to the worst we had all time. If you watched any games last season you would have seen several players that were worse. Willis McGahee should not be on the list. James Patton was a very promising player until injuries wiped him out. These worst ever lists are kind of crazy. A lot depends on the era, what point in their career tha they played for the Bills and who they played with.

Are you saying that in total 5 centers, 6 guards and 10 tackles made the Pro bowl in 2009?

It is called giving something back to the community or a cause that you care about. They typically will use their name to form a hopefully long lasting fund for something good and in need. They supply their time, their name, and yes usually a lot of cash too. Are you suggesting he simply give all his money away instead?

Maybe Chan is the right coach
Bob in STL replied to Bufcomments's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It sure seems that way indeed. In fifty years of Bills football we have had 3 really good football coaches on this team. Saban, Knox and Levy. You can throw in Wade Phillips too but I for one am not a big fan of Wade as a HC. Buter Ramsey might not have bneen too bad considering the players he had from 60-62. Now look at the bad ones .. John Rauch, Jope Collier, Harvey Johnson, Jim Ringo, Kay Stephenson, Hank Boullough, Greggggo Williams, Mike Mularkey, and Dick Jauron. At least Collier, Williams and Mularkey are accomplished coordinators in the NFL. Ringo was a good OL position coach anf that is it. Jauron a good secondary coach and that is it. Rauch was crap at Oakland and here. Stephaneson and hammer'in Hank should never have been given an NFL coaching job. Johnson was a thrown in after other coaches were fired in mid season. Oveall a pretty sad crew. -
Torbor could be one of the better pick ups in the off season and will help this team at inside or outside LB. He sends a signal to Maybin to up his game. No one is going to give Maybin a starting position. We already heard rumblings from Nix that Maybin was not the kind of player he would have picked. Your list of first round duds has some errors. Patulski at least played and started. Harmon was a good player but did not fit on our team. Gant never lived up to his pick but he had a few good season. Miller was good back but short lived. Hunter, Bell and Losman at least played but were not good picks. Lets not forget Mike Williams at #5. Actually the least production from a first round pick would go to this crew: Booker Moore, Phil Dokes, John McCargo, Eric Flowers and Tom Cousineau. All first rounders that gave us nothing. I sure hope Maybin does not join this illustrious group.

I thought that "bump" meant agreement or concurrence with the last comments.

Chan is a good coach and well respected in the NFL. He is an excellent OC too. We shall see how he does with the Bills in both roles. To be successful he will need better players that what he currently has. We still need help in the trenches, at WR, and maybe even at LB. Plus we do not know if we have a QB on the roster that can get the job done. Lots of unproven players. Not sure who will emerge as a leader on this team. This is an area that has been lacking for a long time. Too many players seem to be ok with losing. That has to stop. -
Worst NFL stadium issue you have had, anywhere

I read this twice, still couldn't make any sense out of it, then laughed anyway. -
I agree with your assessment and yet she does nothing for me. No talent at all .. she is part of todays insane pop culture that makes Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears a star. I will go back to Barbara Eden in the 60's or Farah in the 70's. That works for me.

Offensive Line Rankings
Bob in STL replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ridiculously low? It sounds about right. It is based on last years performance and the fact that we have not upgraded any postions. Butler out at RT and Green is in ... can that be looked at as an upgrade? What did we do in the draft? We picked up two late round projects. If the interior three improve, and that is likely, then that will help. Please admit we are lacking at both tackles with Bell, Green, Meredith, Chambers and Wang. -
trade package with Schobel and Lynch.
Bob in STL replied to gjv001's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sure. Every team out there is just dying to acquire a DE that wants to go to work on his terms or else retire. When you through in a RB that can't stay out of trouble and is one false move away from another suspension you really make the deal hard to beat. Why not throw in McCargo and ask for a number 1? -
Better than stripping in a fight club.

Edwards may get the QB call, Fitz may get the QB call. Summer time football news.
-
This is not a depth chart ... it is a projection of starters with some fantasy thrown in at the end. Nice to dream. LT Meredith and RT Calloway? I am very concerned about this prediction. I think it will be LT Bell and RT Green which is also pretty scary.
-
I would say 3rd best based on last years performance on the field. Sorry man but its true.
-
Comparing Lynch to Dickerson? Can I tell you that Lynch couldn't carry his jock strap?
-
What crap. Wya to dismiss a mans career with no facts. Just like the season opener against New England, right? Ask Bellichek and Brady what they think of Mr. Schobel. We just lost one of the few very good players on the roster.
-
Really? He is a very capable LT. I don't think you will find much agruement that he is a better player at this point in his career than Bell/Meredith/Wang.
