It’s a lot of hypocrisy. If this has happened last year, then that’s one thing. But this happened a decade when Gruden was in a completely different situation and our world was a much different place.

Everything that I’ve read said this was not the case. Terry had a fondness for Doug and never held the Rex hire against him. If anything, the hire was Terry’s and Russ Brandon who famously told him not to let Rex leave the building. Even with the embarrassing presser, I feel that Terry wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. I can guarantee you that the press conference was what made McDermott want a new PR person though. The question that we’ll probably never know is whether there was a plan to fire Whaley after the draft back in January when McDermott was hired or if it was a decision Terry arrived at later once McDermott took over and slowly started gaining influence. Whaley (along with Jim Monos) will contend that he felt blind sighted by the firing in May and at the time, had no idea it was coming. Though it’s possible he’s either covering to make himself better or he simply was too naive to see it coming

Yeah so this is not true at all. Russ was around through McDermott’s first year and into 2018 through May. I believe he was in the draft room when the Bills took Allen. That’s over one season. The Bills had a GM and HC for years before McDermott and Russ still found a way to involve himself in football decisions. McDermott made sure this didn’t happen. As far as Whaley being a dead man walking, that wasn’t the case in January 2017. He allowed Doug to run the job search and he was involved in some football decisions at first. Terry liked Doug personally, I think he was hoping things would work out with Whaley and McDermott, but it became clear that he needed to go Not firing the GM was not “Billsy incompetence.” It was standard across the league for decades, though not all team subscribe to this procedure any more. If you are going to fire your GM, you usually wait until after the end of their “season” which is the draft. The reason being is, if you fire them before, you risk them leaking all the scouting info to other teams. Also scouting beings nearly a year before the actual draft (sometimes longer). A few months really isn’t a lot of time for a new GM to put together a new staff and scout players The reason being is,

- Removed Russ Brandon from all football matters. When McDermott was hired Brandon was “promoted” to president of PSE overseeing the business side of the Bills and Sabres. But the move prevented him from getting involved in football decisions as he previously had in the past. - Removed Doug Whaley and Jim Monos and staff. Average at best as talent evaluators. Had no clue how to build a roster or long term vision. Also had no play at QB. These two needed to go. - Removed Scott Berchtold. PR person for 30 year or so and rumored to be the one of the famous “leaks” at OBD. Also he made move with several other coaching positions. I believe the trainer and strength and conditioning coach. Not only did he remove the underperforming co-workers from the positions, he filled the jobs with competent replacements who had the same vision as he did. Basically he gave himself a completely fresh start which is what Rex, Marrone and Gailey never did before him. Yep this was the rumor. Sean came to the interview with a giant binder outlining not only what he would do on the field but also with the culture of the organization. This is something that Rex and Marrone never did. Purely football guys. I believe that’s how he initially landed the job and his attention to detail and planning gained him a lot of trust quickly

This all depends who you believe. According to Whaley and Monos, Terry loved Mahomes and wanted to take him. They liked him too but McDermott claimed he didn’t want to send a message that the team was rebuilding with a rookie QB. So with the new coach wanting to punt and GM’s not being overly vocal, Terry kept him mouth shut. Monos, more so that Whaley, claimed he saw physical promise in Mahomes but there still were some question makes about how he’d transition into the NFL. The reality of the situation IMO was that Whaley and his staff were on his way out and this had been the plan for months, if not back in January when McDermott was hired. I think Terry was speaking to consultants like Bill Polian who advised him to wait to fire the scouting staff until after the draft to risk intel getting leaked to other teams. A franchise QB is a huge decision. I don’t think McDermott trusted the advice from Whaley/Monos and certainly not Terry. He also wasn’t confident enough to pick on his own. So he waited until he could get Beane and his scouts to advise him. It’s hard to fault his logic

This post is selling McDermott short. At worst, you can say he’s a “good” coach. Making the playoffs with the 2017 roster was pretty impressive on its own. Second, McDermott was a huge part of Josh’s success from his selection to hiring a new OC/QB coach to develop him. Third - I think McDermott has shown the ability to adapt which should be a given but isn’t always the coach for a HC. The only criticism that I think is fair about McDermott is whether he’s among the very best in the NFL by coaching a team into and winning the Super Bowl

The smartest thing McDermott did was get rid of the dysfunction at One Bills Drive when he first took over. Unlike Rex and Doug Marrone before him, I think he was smart enough to know that the issues at OBD went beyond what happened on the field. Not sure how an unproven rookie HC got that much power, probably the naivety of the Pegulas, but they definitely lucked out. Very Good coach…now he needs to prove he’s a great coach!

A beat reporter covering the Bengals, tweeted out this picture of Brian Callahan revealing that the Bengals set is hip press conference in the hallway using a cheap looking push cart. One one hand, it’s not a huge deal but on the other this is a team that’s worth $2.3 billion and in the NFL perception is everything. So I think this was a stumble by Cincy’s PR team and it makes the team look like a poverty franchise. Still it did generate some funny responses The responses have been hilarious:

To me this kind of intel seems like some or bing overvalued among fans/media. How often do you see a team sign a player who was a former member of their upcoming opponent only to release them a week later? I don’t really feel like this is that big of an advantage.

There were a lot of people in the Buffalo media who watched the Texans game against Carolina and came away with the conclusion that Davis Mills wasn’t that bad of a QB, and that Houston wasn’t the dumpster fire of a team that many people believe. Joe Buscaglia, who I regard as one of the best on the Buffalo Beat was one of them. I also hear beat reporters from Houston saying that Culley would “take the reigns off” Mills against the Bills. Houston went from being regarded as a scrappy underdog team to a train wreck. Houston isn’t as bad as they played last Sunday, the Buffalo media has no idea how to scout opponents, or the Houston beat reporters are big homers

If you listened to the coverage before the Texans game, all of the Houston reporters were talking up Mills as being a smart QB and that Houston overall was not a bad football team. Once the Bills absolutely owned them, everyone said how bad of a team they are. I think the manner in which the Bills beat this team says a lot about the strength of the team.

Man, it’s crazy how the NFL works - the playoff game versus Houston seemingly was the turning point of his career. If he played well, it probably would be enough to catch onto a 53 roster - maybe even with the Bills. Instead he plays a very average game with a few drops and never catches on with an NFL roster again. I always liked Duke and hope he’d have this crazy redemption story.
