Part 2- Another disaster by McDs defense in the playoffs
JohnNord replied to RoscoeParrish's topic in The Stadium Wall
Right - A lot of people who are critical about the defense are really overlooking the overall talent. The defense is what it is - there probably aren’t any players among the Top 10 at their defensive position. Still despite this, they’ve put together two good defensive performances against two of the NFL’s top coaches. Baltimore was a terrible matchup on paper - probably the worst in the AFC for Buffalo. Yet they stood their ground, largely due to coaching and of course execution. The defense is far from a shut down group. They have flaws which are going to be exploited, you just hope they can steal a few possessions for the offense. -
While it’s true there is no set duration of time, theres a lot of positive signs. He was reported to be fine in the locker room after the game. Also I remember last season Taron Johnson (who did have a concussion history) entered the concussion protocol on Monday 1/15 and was cleared by Sunday 1/21. so all in all, I’d be surprised if Benford isn’t starting on Sunday but we’ll see.

Levy was 0-4 in Super Bowls, McDermott cannot go 0-4 vs KC

True… though our good buddy Aaron Rodgers in 0-4 vs. San Fran -
Rob Ryan hired by USC as Defensive Assistant

They want a jovial big man to crack jokes, drink beer, and talk about what a legend his old man was and the the hell he and his twin brother raised in high school -
It’s the identical situation as McDermott… maybe a little worse considering Baltimore was the #1 seed last season. The only difference is that Harbaugh won a championship 13 years ago.
-
Probably not… He was also chilling in the locker room celebrating. I feel that the Bills fan base overreacts to injury reports. We’ll see what happens this week but I’m guessing he’s limited in practice on Wednesday

Interesting take from Simms. He thinks Lamar could have thrown the ball better

You aren’t kidding. I can’t listen to Jeremy and Joe. I think Jeremy was fine as Howard Simon’s co-host but I don’t like the current show. I think callers are a big problem. I’m not sure if they can’t get people to call in or whether they just aren’t able to find someone that makes a good point. This morning with Sal, he took a call from someone who said it was rare that the Bills won despite the yardage discrepancy (it happened in the 3 other divisional games), some older guy called in and said “Bills need to be better in the red zone” (they were 3/4 yesterday). Then a caller said he was traveling to Hong Kong for Lunar New Year and would be watching the game at 7 :00 AM. Sal probably would have been better off not taking calls - I just wonder if Jeremy & Joe did the same thing.

Joe Brady, Josh Allen, and the playcalling
JohnNord replied to Low Positive's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think there were a couple of other play calls as well. Baltimore seemed to have Josh tricked by simulated pressures. -
Joe Brady, Josh Allen, and the playcalling

The TE screen to Knox was 100% a Josh Allen audible and not a very good choice -
What play was he picked on?

I feel like we match up better against KC…BUT…Baltimore also matched up better against us. I feel that their fan base was relying on the first meeting too much. Once the playoffs start, it’s a new season. So I do feel better about the Bills chances but we also can’t think the game will unfold the way it this season. It’s gonna be another tight one and I hope Buffalo gets the bounces

What concerns me is the possibly of Bills WR’s not getting open downfield. I’m waiting to hear what Joe Marino says
-
I would bet anything they roll with Kareem Jackson and the last time he took the field vs. LAR he didn’t look so hot. Hope he doesn’t have to take the field
-
Yeah I like all of the guys and felt bad for Mark Andrews. It was always going to be a “choke artist” game for whatever QB/coach lost. I feel bad that Lamar and Harbaugh now have to endure an entire offseason of that.
-
The second half was not Brady’s finest moment as a play caller. I really do wonder what happened on the backend, because it was clear Baltimore was clogging the box to stop the run. It could have been that Cooper/Hollins/Coleman just weren’t getting open deep?
-
I’m higher on Lamar and think he really has made some good strides as a passer this season - especially as a runner which gives him a really unique dynamic. But I’m with you. He was MVP last season by default given Baltimore’s record and #1 seed. This season he flat out didn’t deserve it over Josh and while he played a very good second half of football, his first half is part of the reason why Baltimore was playing from behind. The whole “playoff choker” title really isn’t it fair but it was always going to happen to the team that lost this game.
-
The defense didn’t really “collapse.” They gave up 19 points in the second half, 11 of which were set up by short fields thanks to Josh. Houston’s offense was good that season so while surrendering 2 TD’s and a FG isn’t stellar, 19 points isn’t really that extreme. Especially when Houston won the overtime toss and the defense got the ball back. If that was their margin for error, then maybe that was part of the problem.

I’ve you are going to criticize McDermott, it’s not really fair to use 2019. The Bills were the road underdog and lower seed playing on the road. Bills fans don’t want to face the reality that Josh greatly contributed to that loss. He took a sack that knocked them out of FG range and fumbled at midfield that led to a Texans TD. He was not the only issue and to his credit he led them to a tie FG, but that sequence is how the game flipped. Also if you remember, Frazier called the perfect blitz on 3rd down and Milano and Taron had Watson dead to rights. It was a fluke he escaped. So a loss is a loss, but to say they “collapsed” is not being intellectually honest.

Erik Turner on Cover 1 talks to a lot of players off record and what he says largely matches Dunne’s report. From what I can recall, he heard the plan was a squib which somehow never made it to Bass. As far as Farwell, this might have been the final nail in the coffin. I remember reading that he either wasn’t happy in Buffalo or they weren’t happy with him, and both parties were likely headed toward a divorce after 2021. Where you can hold McDermott and Frazier responsible if of the defense on the final series.

They’ve been bad for most of the season after sustaining so many injuries. The offense and game script really helped them out a lot.

Goff didn’t look the same once he had the head injury. It really makes you wonder whether that hit has any impact on his performance
