I may be terrible, but I am really looking at Safety.  Chase and Hurst running wide open for TDs has left an imprint on my mind.  I need a Safety in the top 50.

I've got safety high too, and I don't see why that makes you terrible?

Yes we've been blessed to have a top tandem for many years, but they are both on the wrong side of 30.  That's life in the NFL.

In my latest mock, I went with TWO Alabama safeties....

  2. Thanks for all the opinions.  I for one would lean to the FA and get a solid backup as opposed to rolling the dice on a mid round draft pick.

We have to do better than what we have though, and I disagree with the sentiment that we're toast without Allen.  That shouldn't be the goal for next season.  Take steps to take some of that pressure off of one man next season.

    I like the Trubisky idea.

  3. Just putting down my first.  I'm still not sold on WR being a must draft for the 1st-3rd.  I'm seeing a great future for Shakir, and I've not given up on Gabe Davis like some have.  With a retooled O-line, Allen will have more time on his hands as well.  Davis will bounce back I think.

I went with Corner in the first mainly because of the prospect that was sitting there.  I wouldn't hesitate on Corner in the first if it fell the right way.  I'm way more concerned with White, than I am with Davis.  I'll put it that way I guess.  I did pick a WR, allbeit in the 6th.

I also went with Linebacker higher than most.  Klein's replacement.

Tackle in the second and two picks on OG's.

Depth on the DL and one of the hardest "enforcer" type safeties in the draft (IMO...).

  4. Bumping this up peeps.....

I disagree with the OP and would like to morph this thread into an overall assessment of the CB position on the team.

Hoping to get a full opinion (no rose coloured glasses) on the entire CB squad.

    We good??

What tweaks would you make to CB.  I see this as either an FA need with a proven vet or even grab a first rounder again.....  If White turns it around, great.  If not, we have a plan.  You can never have too many good corners in the NFL.

    Yes I know....... (O-line) :)

Yes, I know he looked terrible this season in limited play.

3rd rounder in a potential Super Bowl year.

We needed OL and WR badly.

    Why did we draft him?

The Bills play a base 4-2-5 defense… 4 down linemen, two linebackers, 5 DBs including a Nickel (Taron) who acts as a linebacker at times. Was Bernard intended as insurance against a Taron or Edmunds injury? Was he intended to be used as a core special teamer and traditional OLB in 4-3 looks?

I didn’t understand this pick at the time and still don’t … unless it was always the plan to groom him to replace Edmunds… which also seems odd in a SB year.

So… what do you think was the ideal outcome Beane had in mind?

Try to keep the snarky/defeatist answers to a minimum.

I'd say special teams and depth with upside.  It didn't work out so far.

  6. I got a bad feeling about this prospect.  Just a feeling.  Every time I see an "ultra cut" athlete, I feel that they have failed to live up to the hype.  Time will tell.

But as for "need", I'd say look outside of the first for RB even if he fell to us.

I'd pick an O-lineman before this guy.

Who would you sign out of these top 51 free agents. I think for OL we could look at Mike McGlinchey. I also wouldn't mind Chauncey Gardner Johnson from the Eagles as safety. He plays the same position in the same type of defense we do so he would be a perfect replacement for poyer. He's also only 25. Who would you all be interested in?

Bring the Bills back and take a look at RT McGlinchy (SF)

  8. I'm greedy.  I want both back.

But if Hines is under contract next year, he's the guy.

Singletary MAY want to test the market, and I'd bring him back if we can be reasonably competitive in negotiations.  Lot's of talent in the draft, plus we have some good depth to step up.

Who remember Chris Givens? He was a Wake Forest product, ran a 4.41 and had 1,350 yards of production. Was drafted in the 4th round. It’s another reason why I’m hesitant to pull the trigger on AT Perry. It’s just not worth the risk and waste of draft pick. Same with the NC state and NC WRs. Just not worth it.

Gabe came from UCF. The statistics are not in his favor. It’s less than a 10% rate that a non traditional conference powerhouse team yields a NFL star WR.

Respectfully, I'll look at his time in the NFL.  He's proven that he can be dominant.  I'm not sure what happened but I hope it turns around.

That said I don't disagree with you about potential round 1 target WR, IF the right player drops.  I would not reach though.

  10. Honestly while do do think WR is a need, I still think that Gabe Davis is going to become the player he was in LAST season's playoffs....  plus Shakir is going to be a major impact player next season IMO.  With those 3, we're pretty good.  Now if a WR that's ranked high falls to us in the first, you have to take him, but I'd prefer interior O-line there.

Also, what about SAFETY?  Our starters are both on the wrong side of 30 next season.

Should we be talking about Alabama's Brian Branch or Texas AM Antonio Johnson as options?

Arguably a bigger need than WR (assuming Gates/Shakir work out the way I think they can)?

The whole Tre White situation to start the year was strange at first, but then you seen him get on the field, and you realized why he wasn't playing.  The guy was not very good this year at all.  Some will blame the injury, but how many games you going to give a guy till he is back to playing up to his very large payday?

I think White will never be what he was.  He looked old out there, even after just playing 5 or 6 games this year.  I also think his playing style limits the entire defense on the type of defense we can play.  He does not excel in press man and needs to play off guys.  I personally think this team needs to play more press man.  Tough to transition to that when your "number 1" CB and 16 million dollar man can't play it at a top level.

Problem with White is, you can't get out of his contract.  His dead cap is higher than if he is on the team.

The only option I really see, is if Taron Johnson takes over for Poyer at safety.  Tre moves to nickel corner where he will be less exposed on an island, and you bring in another press man outside CB to pair with Elam.  Elam's strength is press man and it was really head scratching you drafted him and then played him in a zone.

Ya let him play out the contract and then let him walk if he does not improve.

We need better depth at CB and I hope that he turns it around.

    1. Don't panic.

    2. Let Frazier go and find someone who can work with McD defense but makes it a little more aggressive.

    3. Start using rookies more.

    4. Stop giving guaranteed money to players who may not make roster (like Howard, Mancz, Duke Johnson or Marquel Lee)

    5. Stop paying ST specialists and stop paying 5th DE and 4th DT more than vet min, no matter what.

    As for the team:

Keep everyone from this group who stays for vet min with NO guaranteed money: Matakevich, Crowder, Quessenberry, Martin, Van Roten, Hart, Boettger, Marlowe, Klein, hell even Saffold if he takes it. Then let these guys go if they don't make final 53.

Make offers to all RFAs - Dodson, Jackson, Lewis

    Let T.Jones, Kumerow, Sweeney go.

Keep Edmunds for 13M aav if possible, otherwise try to tag him and trade him.

Keep Singletary for 3,5M aav on 3/4 year deal, I think he takes it

Let Poyer go unless he stays for less than 4M

Keep Phillips and/or Lawson for no more than 2M each

Trade Oliver if you can get mid 2nd for him and draft his replacement, otherwise let him play on 5th year

Trade Davis if you can get 2nd for him and draft his replacement, otherwise let him play on final year of his rookie contract

Let Hines go unless he agrees to serious pay cut.

Find the best OL FA possible and pay him.

Maybe extend Jones for one more year.

Get best backup QB available for no more than 2M (yeah take a little bigger risk on this one)

If there is any reason to believe that Bernard might be any good think about playing 3LBs and trade T.Johnson (save quite a lot).

Draft WR and OL in rounds 1 and 2

Draft OL and defense (S or LB, whatever meets need/quality) in rounds 3 and 4

Or swing a trade for good WR for 1st or 2nd - in that case for sure trade Oliver to create cap space.

Great post.  I appreciate the details and thought.

Don't panic is a given.  This is a playoff team :).  I'd be moreso concerned if the Bills went 8-8 and missed the playoffs.  This is a talented roster overall.

I agree with a lot of this with a few extra points.

Good list of vet mins with the caveat that they have to make the team....  especially those O-linemen.  I'd add that I think Matakevich has been a bit better than a vet minimum bill.

A note on Poyer:  Next contract has to have some injury clauses or games played.  Worried about his age and ability to come back from the day to day "DINGS" that football brings.  Will he stay healthy and continue to play at a high level?

Your list starting with Jones.  I'm no cap specialist but I'd keep the whole group you listed except Phillips if possible.

I also think we need a better backup QB for insurance.  Go free agency.

As for the draft, my current rounds 1-3 positional targets as starters or top end backups are:

    OG

    OC

    S

    DL

    WR

Other draft needs for better depth:

    LB

    DL

    WR

    S

    OL

  13. Allen, Diggs, Miller.  Top tier.

Despite the poor showing in the playoffs, the defense was very good.  Excellent really more often than not.

    Great reasons for optimism.

I think that Shakir is going to be one of the better WR's on this team for a long time as well.  Flashes of brilliance in a rookie year, and I think he will take a major step forward next season.

Not sure what happened to Gabe Davis, but he's also GOT to rebound next season (in a contract year as someone mentioned above).

Management has been vocal about the issue with the "trenches", so a heavy investment in draft and $ capital could give Allen more time (i.e. less mistakes), and and better clock control (with a boost to the run game).

Yesterday was a real eye-opener - but we've seen it ever since Miller went down.  The Bengals were missing 3 out of 5 starting O-linemen, and our pass rush was still anemic.

They were saying in the post-game how outside of Miller, we don't have 1 guy in the top 40.

And we've also seen that many SB champs have this as a strength.  Think of the Bucs line from 2 years ago, or the Rams last year.  Multiple players who are good or great at getting to the passer.

How do the Bills fix this?  It feels like they have made every investment they can make - high draft picks, getting the best pass rusher in FA.  It's a glaring weakness.

Losing Miller hurt.  May not be able to afford top FA pass rusher, so I'd look to the draft.

Thoughts on who you'd like back?

The big decisions are Tremaine Edmunds and Jordan Poyer IMO.

If we possibly can resign them, I want to.   Work your magic, Beane

The RFAs are all slam-dunks I think.  Tyrel Dodson, Dane Jackson, and Cam Lewis all worth a qualifying offer as RFA.

Bunch of guys where "it depends" on what they want.

Guys I'd like to see back if their contracts are affordable include Tyler Matekavich (ST captain, especially if we move on from Taiwan Jones), Sam Martin (did well as punter), Case Keenum, and AJ Klein.  Jordan Philips played well when healthy, but he appeared to impair his own health stupidly trying to extend the plays.  He was overpaid for his overall contributions IMO.  Shaq Lawson, I thought, played about his best football and would be worth trying to bring back - it'd depend upon what he wants.

Rather than bring Saffold back, I would rather see Ike Boettger re-signed to a minimum deal if possible and look for an upgrade on OL in the draft and FA

It's also time to look for a change, or at least strong competition, at RT.

I think it's time to move on from Taiwan Jones, Jake Kumerow, Tommy Sweeney, most of the OL guys, Jaquan Johnson, and Dean Marlowe.  Need upgrades there.

    I'd let a number go...

    All the UFA O-linemen

    QB Keenum

DL Phillips (depends on his ask though)

WR Kumerow and Crowder (why not keep Beasley of he still wants a shot)

    TE Sweeney

    AJ Klein

    S Marlowe

I'm afraid to talk about Edmunds on this board but that's a contract I'll be interested in watching play out...
