If the Bills defense is healthy, they're 6-1 right now
Beck Water replied to Simon's topic in The Stadium Wall
So starting out missing Tre, and ending up missing Von? -
He's got a sprained shoulder. A sprain in his non-throwing shoulder caused his completion % to dip for 4 games in 2020. There's every reason to think it's impacting him and will for the next 3-4 weeks. In 2020, Daboll had a game or two where he strongly limited passing attempts, and we just ran ran ran. Maybe we need that, instead of 41 pass attempts to 24 rushes.

Wellllll.......I am the one who suggested that Singletary and McKenzie should be equipped with the sort of tall orange fiberglass poles you find affixed to Syracuse fire hydrants in winter. Yes, sometimes Josh does throw to tightly covered players he trusts, while ignoring open ones he trusts less. I wouldn't want to say that Josh "doesn't see" open receivers, but I think it's pretty inarguable that Josh will pass up open receivers who are short of the sticks in favor of taking a deep shot, sometimes to a pretty well covered receiver downfield. Sometimes, because that tendency is on film, to a well covered receiver with a DB in position to jump the route and pick him. He's aggressive, and he has that "arm arrogance". Sometimes it pays off, and sometimes it doesn't. It's also a fact that Josh will tend to respond to pressure by extending the play with his legs, instead of getting the ball out quickly to an underneath option with so much green in front of him they could plant a christmas tree farm. It's a blessing and a curse. Yes, Josh was 7th in the league in passing yards and Y/A last season, which is top. Is that good enough? Mahomes was #1. Josh was also #3 in INT last season. Is that good enough? Maybe if we want to win a championship, especially with a depleted defense, we need Josh to "level up". Which he has inarguably demonstrated HE CAN DO. I'm having trouble finding that "top 3 in production" stat for last year and this - can you help me?

Then maybe Josh Allen needs to stop trying to be "low positive" and start trying to be whatever he was in 2020, 2021 etc.

Beck Water replied to Simon's topic in The Stadium Wall
How was their defense worse than decimated last season? You're right of course. I think a lot of us look at the offense though, because if the offense were playing better (fewer dumb-ass turnovers, someone besides Diggs stepping up) we would also be 6-1 -
Josh was on the Pat McAfee show. Pat asked him "big film watcher?" Josh said "yeah" Then he said "I try not to overwatch film" and explained that teams tend to play the Bills differently than what they put on film, so he finds it better to react to what he sees during the game. https://www.twobillsdrive.com/community/topic/249008-nattering-nabobs-of-negativism/page/8/#comment-8520432 I think I had a post where I actually transcribed what Josh said but it is a bear for me to find stuff by searching here. Frankly, whatever Josh is doing in the way of prep, I think he needs a "reality check" and it needs to change. @HoofHearted did a good job breaking down the first half passing plays last week and showing that there were open guys and guys who should have been the first read, that Josh wasn't taking. In his OBD segment last Friday, Greg Cosell similarly pointed out a couple of plays where he thought the read should have been different and there was a play for the taking (same observations that Hoof had made here BTW) I don't always agree with Joe Marino when I've listened to him, but I see the same thing again vs Pats - Josh had options he's not taking, some of which are, in fact, the "correct" option in a given situation (vs a Blitz, for example). In the 2021 season WC game against the Patriots, Bill Belicheck wagered that Josh would be unable to make the correct decision time after time, that he would get impatient and try to force balls in vs. taking the short, safe throw. Josh responded with a "Game of Games" where he did everything right, and as a result, the Bills scored a TD on every offensive drive. That Josh isn't playing QB for the Bills right now. And for the Bills to have a chance, someone needs to hunt that guy down and find him and bring him back. I don't know if it's a difference in QB coaching or who is talking to Josh between series or game prep or what.

Why is everyone focused on the Offense here?
Beck Water replied to PatsFanNH's topic in The Stadium Wall
Good questions 1) We expect more from the offense, because Allen, Diggs, Cook, Kincaid etc. It seemed Beane had finally addressed the iOL in the draft and FA. So it's very concerning that they should be totally impotent for the first half of 3 successive games 2) the defense came into the year with questionmarks for most of us, between starting an inexperienced MLB, aging secondary, and changing DC. So I think we came into the year believing that for the Bills to succeed this season, they offense had to bring its "A" game 3) the defense has now been ravaged by injuries at all 3 levels - Tre White, Matt Milano, both out for the season; Daquan Jones, out for an indefinite period of time; now Ed Oliver out. 4) complimentary football - when one unit is hampered, the other unit has to "step it up" in order to keep winning. that's not happening 5) a lot of people have questions (if not definite conclusions) about how good and how competent as an OC Dorsey really is -
They had an interception, a long drive where we came away with a kiss from Ken's sister (FG), and a 3-and-out ----- while the opponent had a FG, a TD, and a 3 and out. I'd call that starting pretty slow, myself. I don't know what people expect McDermott to say to the press, though. Do they expect him to say "look, Josh Allen has been starting games with his head up his ass, the OL starts out playing like they're allergic to physical contact, and our receivers should be called "fumblefingers 2, fumblefingers 3, Kincaid, and Diggs"? McDermott has ideas what's wrong, he's just not going to air them in the press.

Did Dorien Williams get benched yesterday?
Beck Water replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall
They used 4, but it was effectively 3 because Settle couldn't get anything done. This isn't news, with DaQuan Jones out in the Bengals playoff game Settle played like half the snaps and it was Fugly. 60% against NWE with DaQuan AND Ed Oliver (who they plugged in at 1T vs Giants just to have someone who can play there) out. And it was Fuglier. I actually had good hopes for Settle when we signed him and hoped he was hampered by his calf injury last season but ick, apparently not. Eh. First off Early Season (1st 5 games) we had Milano. When Williams came in for him, he looked bad. Williams looked ok against the Giants. If there's one thing Bill Belicheck does know how to do, it's to scheme up to fool rookies and young players and take advantage of them, Dorian Williams included. They also run a quick-release passing game with a good bit of YAC for the most part, not sure about Sunday. More than half of passing yards YAC. -
I am. Here's why. Word was (I think @HappyDays had it) that Knox had a torn ligament and a broken bone in his wrist/hand he's been playing with the last 2 1/2 weeks. I've had a torn ligament in my thumb, "gamekeeper's thumb". I had surgery, involving suturing it and putting in a pin. I believe they have better strategies with early mobilzation available now. But it's something like 4-6 week recovery. So we've had Knox out there failing to catch 50% of his targets the two previous weeks and 66% yesterday, when he could have just gotten the freakin' surgery and been on the road to recovery. Can we please put this "McDermott is ultra super wimpy and conservative with injuries" narrative to rest?
-
correct. I have no idea that McDermott is ridiculously cautious regarding injuries. If Milano playing when he couldn’t lift his arm to tackle and Ford playing when he couldn’t lift his arm to block is “ridiculously cautious”, what would aggressive look like, Monty Python’s Black Knight? Fans come up with all kinds of narratives, like “McDermott just refuses to play rookies of superior ability”

Eh. From his rookie year, Gabe Davis was on the field 2nd most to Diggs and more than Beasley. But no way was Gabe Davis the #2 WR in 2020. Beasley was the #2 in targets, receptions, and yards, and it wasn't close. Gabe was out there to block downfield, and it wasn't close. In 2021, Manny Sands had 2nd most snaps to Diggs and slightly edged Beasley out in yards per game (though Beasley had more targets and more receptions per game) I don't think it's anything like so simple as "whoever is on the field more is the #2"

First off, the teams don't put together game plans on Monday morning. The position coaches stay up all night analyzing film and GPS data from Sunday's game. They grade the players and do "corrections" with the players in a light practice on Monday. These days with ipads, players may review their own film on the flight home or go home and watch it Sunday night. Then the players have Tuesday off, while the assistants and coaches work as hard as they can to put together a game plan from data and film that the assistants assigned to advance scouting have assembled on the next opponent, with whatever their most recent game plan added in. Josh Allen said Daboll used to send out the game plan Tuesday afternoon which was considered early and helpful; more usual would be Weds morning, when position groups review it in meetings and then the team walks through it in practice.

Week 7 Bills @ Patriots - on to Foxborough!
Beck Water replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
Rex? Rex Ryan? Is that you? -
Von Miller played 27 snaps against the Giants. 35%. He played 20 snaps against the Jaguars, 23%. Recalculating...... I hope management does not share your understanding that we should "sit some vets against lower tier teams" because that's the way to get your butt whipped and not make the playoffs. The margin between winning and losing in the NFL is usually fairly small. Show up and go hard or go home. Any Given Sunday.

Usually IMO when someone says "member of the NFL team" they're talking 53 man roster not practice squad. Though of course PS members are part of the team. So this could be seen as semantics, but the practical difference is: -members of the Giants 53 man roster can not be signed by other teams -members of the Giants practice squad can sign with another team to their 53 man roster at any time, no release needed The point is, if Beasley requested his release because another team wanted him, it's their practice squad they want him for, because if it was for their 53 man roster, Beasley need not request release. He can just get his things and go.

Have we had this yet? Officially out There's also this Has anyone heard an injury update on Damien Harris? Does not sound great to put him on IR for a neck strain. Though it's 4 games, so....
