I think a Tyrod type vet QB is probably a plan B or C for the Pats, I could see Phillip Rivers being a more likely fall back option if he wants a plug and play vet. I think the path that makes sense for the Pats is to try and trade for an established QB. Matt Ryan, Dak, Matt Stafford and Derek Carr could all be available via trade and I think had for a reasonable price. All of those QB's would represent above average QB play on contracts that (with the exception of Dak) would be not killer considering the position's value. That issue would of course be that they would have to give up a premium draft pick or picks and dig into a lot of your cap space. It will be interesting to see how they go about this.

I would hope that they go in this direction, because it would be (old) Billsy all the way.

Honestly, about halfway into this season I thought that he would be fired, and someone here (I forget who) asked me what that would accomplish.  The cupboard seems pretty bare over there, so in that light I didn't have an answer.

Why are they doing it when they are?  I dunno, but I do know that we've seen it here before, in particular with a coach doing an audition towards the end of the season, so I don't want to be overly snarky about it.

I have a good buddy who is a legit Pats fan. From Boston, he went to Cuse and actually loves WNY and all the crazy Bills mafia sh*t.

He tells me there’s a sizable contingent of Pats “fans” that want Belichick fired.

Yes, and I've also heard that many others weren't keen to have a person of Newton's "stature" under center this season.

what's the worst case scenario?  the bills lose in the first round.  we're all disappointed and life goes on.

now...with that out of the way, just enjoy it.  this has been fun.  12 wins a for a big boy team, and the bills are finally that.  even if this year doesn't go exactly as wanted, look forward to the future knowing the bills have a good qb and a competent staff.  this team should be competitive for years to come.

If the Bills lose in the first round I will be shocked, like absolutely and completely shocked.  I watch the Bills this season and it's like watching a real football team for a change.  It's refreshing and more than welcomed by this Bills' fan.

Just part of what it is to be a fan.  You continually worry and create worst case scenarios.

I've seen teef on the boards for years.  teef is a cakewalk person, and nothing less.

The 2014-15 Panthers won the NFC South with a 7-8-1 record. Those Panthers and the 2010 Seahawks you mentioned both won their first round playoff game after qualifying for the playoffs with a losing record.

Interestingly enough the only other times a team made it to the playoffs with a losing record was 1982. Both the Browns and Lions qualified with 4-5 records in a shortened season (I'm not sure if they should really count or not).

If Wasington loses and NYG win we'll have a 6-10 division winner which would be the worst win % ever to make the playoffs.

Oh yeah!  I forgot about that Panthers squad.  So true!

And I pretty much discounted everything that happened before the current divisional realignment.

Yeah, but aren't you happy you were wrong????    I didn't make any record prediction.    Without any preseason games, I had no clue what this team would be like.   I certainly never thought they'd be this good, and they were playing a gauntlet of league powers: Rams, Seahawks, 49ers, Chiefs, Steelers, Titans.   I'm sure happy that I underestimated them.

I was going to start a Festivus: Where I was Wrong About the 2020 Bills (and airing of grievances) thread... at the end of the season.  Loving where things are right now and didn't want to jinx it by starting a thread now.

    Oh, so you're a baby then.  🙂

Seriously, please relax.  They're good.  Like really, really good.  And they've been constantly improving since 2017.

It can change just like that? Hmm, I'm skeptical, but good for you I guess. I'm not there yet, need to see a championship first.

Ah, just saw this.  Do you really watch the Bills?  Like, at all?  Have you seen the team since 2000?  If a team went 9-7 it would be like a Moral Victory Super Bowl.  If a team went 8-8 or 7-9, it would be like a deep run.

I, for one, am stoked that this team will have been in the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years.  STOKED.  The squads between 2000-2016 could not do that *****.  At all.  The team would lose to Steelers' backups.  The team would have Kyle Orton under center.  The team drafted EJ Manuel.  And on and on and on...

There was a reason Carolina let him walk. The massive punishment he took with the Panthers mediocre oline and several dirty hits he took combined with his inability to sense the blitz just eroded his skills overall.  I am surprised that Belichick brought him in. Belichick has usually been a good evaluator of free agent help and has no problem evaluating talent more highly than character. In Newtons case he now rates poorly in each. Much better to go with a young QB and waste your time with Newton, he is done!

And that's what I've been saying in thread.  The Bills dickered around, starting in 2000 (and more specifically in 2001) with Rob Johnson and ended up with Bledsoe (holy crap!) and a flaming trash heap leading to, well, basically now, where it's more-than-solid, at the position.  Belichick basically phoned it in this year.  I don't care if Stidham is bad.  Newton is taking steps backwards, and how can you evaluate talent that way?  We have experience in that regard, sadly.

I know at the end of the day these rankings don't mean much, but how did we drop on ESPN after going on the road and laying a smackdown?

Was it because our opponent was a non playoff team and the Packers beat the Titans?

Yeah, I was thinking that exactly.  NE is trash this year, true, but seriously... good play is good play.  It's not like we beat them 13-6 or something.

I think Billy B wants to at least be a competitive 9+ win team without Brady and make the playoffs a few times and win the division without Brady just to show that even with a so/so QB he can still get to 9+ wins because he is such a great coach.

So Billy B has no QB and wants/needs to have a competitive 9+ win team.  For that purpose he could get Tyrod, perhaps, and maybe some wishy washy WRs (along with an augmented D [due to COVID holdouts] and some draft picks).

He's too old for trying to restock, dude.  I swear to you that at some point the guy will look at the numbers and just walk away.  My hope is at the end of this season, but we'll see.  Belichick is at the "I'm going to throw a phone on a national broadcast" phase of his career, and I would be absolutely astounded if he has a couple more sub-par seasons where his biography plays out -- with the conclusion that he retired with clubs that went 6-10, 7-9, and 9-7.  Because we all know that the dialog will be how he parted with Brady and Gronk and that he couldn't win after that.

It's entirely possible that the entire NE FO will perk up and that 2 years from now they'll be contenders again, but I keep going back to the MCM in 1999 and its fallout on the Bills.

They should just cut Barkley for getting Beasley injured. Let's see what Fromm or Webb can do. I'm sure they can't do any worse than Matt 'the Barf' Barkely.

I'm confused as at some point I'd been lead to belief that Barkley should be STARTING for this team (until Allen can *cough cough* learn, of course).
