Wish they would just sign Klein at lb
Einstein's Dog replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall
The proper statement is bpa at premium position of need. I understand you would like the scope of needs reduced (although I don't know how much Klein affects that). So we aren't going to take a great kicker (not premium position), or QB (no need), or RB (not premium position). So even with Klein on board the FO will not select your man, B Robinson. He's an RB - our FA RB Singletary went for $3M while our FA LB went for over $15M- you do the math. -
Will DeAndre Hopkins be available this offseason?
Einstein's Dog replied to NeverOutNick's topic in The Stadium Wall
There are multiple ways to win a Superbowl. And there are multiple ways to improve a team. For a lot of us we would like to see another quality WR. Brady was a high value QB and he had M Evans/C Godwin/A Brown and Gronk. Stafford had C Kupp and R Woods. And the amount spent on J Allen/Diggs and good WR to be named later will not be $80M (even if that WR is DHop). -
McDermott "officially" calling D plays
Einstein's Dog replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Seems like you're splitting hairs there. When outside of the playoff losses was the "calling of the defense" inadequate? People take for granted Frazier's developing and executing the blueprint for Baltimore's demise. If it wasn't for the ugly looking playoff loss defenses, I think Frazier would still be here. I like the idea of McDermott taking over because I would like to see a more aggressive approach. -

The Defense has not been inadequate for 5 years. It was a top 5 defense. It has been the small sample size of playoff losses that did Frazier in. That and a passive look that is unappealing to fans. -

You need to give at least a decent offer because AZ is under no obligation to move DHop out. If the Bills can get DHop for a 3rd and restructure his contract, that would be a huge get IMO. Remember when we traded a 1st for Diggs? -

My hope too, they are showing the recognition of the need for another offensive playmaker (kind of like last years search for pass rusher). So, if not D Hop, then keep looking. There's OBJ, J Jeudy, trading Oliver and 27 for Chicago #9. Keep trying. I hope they can get D Hop, he's my top choice. -

I thought most of us were thinking/hoping we would be in on a stud pass rusher last year. And it happened. This year the majority of the intelligent posters have been hoping for OL help and another stud playmaker on offense (while realizing that to accomplish this there would need to be a movement of resources from the defense to the offense). Getting to far into the weeds is a fools errand. But so far so good on the overall plan. And a D Hop move insanely good. -
The reason you take away a lot of Allens short yardage carries is because you now have someone who is better at it (Harris>Allen>Singletary). The short yardage carries are unnecessary wear and tear on a franchise QB. And now with the lessened amount of times that Allen actually takes it himself, the greater the odds those will be successful because the defense will be keying on Harris.
-
I would say "so far so good" but maybe not finished. A rookie backup big back is a possibility. This would back up Harris and be a possible succession plan. Could be a 4th or 5th rounders - R Johnson types.
-
Personally I think you are getting a little too player specific. It could make you dislike Beane's moves when he is trying to accomplish much the same things as you are advocating. If the FO goes for another OL, some type of WR play -either a vet (OBJ) or high draft pick, I'll be on board. I'm good with whatever they decide on LB -the big move I was hoping for was for them to let Edmunds go.
-
I'm in agreement with you until the undrafted free agent part. We still need another - it's a 17 game regular season- injuries are more part of the norm more now than ever. Something like a 4th rounder on someone like that R Johnson would fit like a glove. This is a Superbowl contending team. The Harris move was big in my book. And getting a better player than lets say Zeke at the potential cost of the third rounder is something the FO should do.
-
But look at the moves the FO has done - upgrade the OL, improve the WR room depth-wise at least, and improve the RB room (especially short yardage). All incremental improvements on the offensive side of the ball while letting the defense take a step down talent-wise with Edmunds leaving. The FO has done the exact thing many of us have wanted. May not be in as big of a way, or the exact personnel, but clearly the O has been the focus. And of course, it's not over. If the FO comes up with a D Hop or OBJ (or my sleeper M Evans) they would have hit a home run.
-
I view the Harris move as more upgrading a role than changing offensive identity. Harris is here to excel in short yardage and pass protection. Harris is an upgrade there. The FO is keeping true to its philosophy of a young, cheaper RB room. This looks to increase the role of the newer RB, Cook, jettison the expired RB Singletary. And they may get a backup/developmental big back like R Johnson in the 4th for the future to replace Harris in a year or two. The offensive identity of the Bills will remain Josh-centric (as it should).
-
I think Hunt interest was before they added Cook + Hines. Now Hunt is too similar of an RB, kind of redundant. It makes sense that the FO says the RB they want to add would be a bigger back that can handle short yardage duty, and be good in pass pro. That's why a lot of people think Zeke is a possible match - a vet on a short term cheap contract along with a 4th for someone like R Johnson. Or the FO could go big for the big back - get a D Henry or D Cook and have them be the RB1 w Cook still a contributor but in a lesser role.

Isaac Seumalo, G, **Update - Signed by Steelers
Einstein's Dog replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
This could be and our FO wanted to make sure to get an OL at the $6-8M range. C McGovern agreed and Seumalo wanted more at the time. -

Pretty ridiculous statements right there. The Steelers have a better offensive identity than the Bills? Maybe if this were the 1970s. You are living in the past if you think the Steelers are building a good team. They look like heavy favorites to be the last in their division - congrats to them. And wasn't this the organization that did the first round pick on the RB (that got less ypc than Singletary). The Bills don't and shouldn't aspire to be the crusty Steelers. -
The reason many people would like to trade Oliver is to move resources from the Defense to the Offense. Oliver is over $10M and that money would go a long way in getting an elite player on offense. To the OP, I think it would be more realistic to think of one move, not multiple. And to rate those moves. Sure D Hop would look great but he is picks and a huge salary. J Jeudy would cost less monetarily but comes at a big draft pick and looming cost a year out. OBJ comes with a midrange cost and lots of injury/recovery risk. D Henry comes at mid-range draft cost and mid-range to high cost - but is also an RB. I'd like to see the FO do an off the radar move of a draft pick for M Evans. Not as expensive as D Hop, more proven experience than Jeudy, healthier than OBJ, and not an RB like D Henry.
-
The FO has been drafting BPA at premium position of need. They have not gone with an RB in the first. QB, CB, WR, OT - all expensive positions. People blast the FO routinely for the DL but those are expensive pieces to a roster. Epenesa, Boogie, and Groot replaced $8M-10M T Murphys/Addisons/Butler types. Dijon might be able to be used instead of a $3M vet like Fournette or Zeke. To the OP, you need to include DL. It is a never ending project and if a stud makes it down it has to be considered. A home grown Von or A Donald is the next best thing to a franchise QB (and we might have one in Groot but you can always use more). This DL guy could replace Oliver (a $10M hit)

Singletary—inarguably above average statistically: discuss
Einstein's Dog replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
Singletary is not an upgrade at the position. He would be rolling back the same at a higher price -he won't be coming back on the rookie deal. I think the plan has been to increase Cooks time. And the overall RB room would improve if could get another who would excel at what Cook/Hines don't do well. A large back that can get the short yardage and is good in pass pro. The R Johnson type in the 4th kind of thing. That accompanied with a short term bargain vet like Fournette or Zeke and the plan stays on point. But the glut of FA RBs and the dropping of the price may be giving the FO thoughts of revising this plan. A veteran stud may now be more reasonable - D Henry or D Cook. And this would give the FO at least one notable improvement for year over year. -

Einstein's Dog replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
True the grass isn't always greener but it doesn't mean the FO shouldn't try. And it seems to me part of the FO plan was to not extend RBs. Use the rookie salary up and discard. Was a great strategy before, but now with the veteran RB glut it may not be necessary to have to go with another rookie. Also I think the FO wants a larger, good short yardage, and good pass protecting RB. This would be a great complement to Cook/Hines. That is not what Singletary provides. Someone like that R Johnson could be drafted around the 4th to go with a cheap vet for a year. And there lingers the D Henry possibility. This is where the FO needs to be flexible and re-route their plans if need be. D Henry is the exception to the rule. Henry is a physical beast that belongs in the elite talent category of player. And don't give me ypc, Singletary is not in the same league as Henry -
Beane still looking to add big bodied RB to roster
Einstein's Dog replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's not *ss backwards if the plan is to add a high quality difference making playmaker. Yes, hopefully the first choice is a D Hopkins/J Jeudy/M Evans. But if the price isn't right a pivot to D Henry works for me. -

Einstein's Dog replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think it comes out to like around $10M because the signing bonus doesn't transfer over. And that's before the Bills/Beane do their tricks of 2 year deal w signing bonus stuff. D Henry isn't an ordinary RB. He is the physical peak RB performer, top 3 in the league, defensive coordinator nightmare. D Henry elevates the offense. He is a playmaker that needs to be game planned for.
