I had thought this was their plan since ditching Diggs. But now with the news of the financing and succession plans, I am worried.
-
But getting OBJ would have shut the door on getting someone better. My sights are higher than OBJ. It's the same way I felt about drafting 2 rookies high. The post June 1st addition should be real quality. The lowest I would like to see is DHop. Metcalf/Aiyuk/DSamuel/Godwin/and DJ Moore all work.
-
I hope this is the fallback position A trade for a WR on a higher tier should be the first attempt. Some I would hope Beane is considering: DK Metcalf rumors. Reasonable $13M salary and we have draft capital B Aiyuk - wants money though Deebo - probably available but expensive DHop - $13M salary and would probably not take as much draft capital wise. DJ Moore - reasonable salary and Chicago has too many WRs\ C Godwin - Tampa might want to move one. A quality WR addition brings the Bills out of the rebuild category. And Beane has claimed he would never want to rebuild while Josh is here.

Deion Jones signed to 1-year deal per Schefter
Einstein's Dog replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall
Might not be too late. Chicago bought K Allen and just drafted Rome. Moore has a reasonable $16M salary and we have some draft capital. -
I think the strong theme Beane/Brady are going for is catch percentage. Players with better hands. And I think K Coleman fits that mold. The future looks bright. But the present 2023 season needs improvement, IMO, in the WR room IMO. Just one more good WR that lines up outside. I love that you bring up DHop because he is on my wish list. We could send enticing draft capital and find enough cash to handle the $13M salary and play cap games to extend another year. DHop could be a great mentor to K Coleman.

Getting another good WR is not an indictment on Shakir. It is a need for the overall talent level of the WR room and dramatically adds to the offensive potential of the Bills. Getting a good WR would give the Bills 4 playable WRs, Shakir/Samuel/Coleman/and new addition, with hopefully 2 that can play the boundary.

Realistic "Transition Year" Expectations
Einstein's Dog replied to Wizard's topic in The Stadium Wall
Transition could have meant moving on from the aging veterans to the younger set. But it appears management is purposefully pushing it into the area of rebuild, especially in the WR room. This may just be trying to set expectations low or it could be a trial balloon to see how the fan base will take to it. Right now I do not like it. One because of the rebuild look. Secondly because the personnel is conducive to a dink and dunk offense. I am still hoping for a move for an established WR, then I can think the Bills are contenders. -
It is discouraging to hear Beane outright deny the trade idea. This is far more than his prior vague lawyer talk designed to keep expectations low.
-
Now you're stretching it. Samuel isn't even an outside WR. I can get behind Coleman over G Davis and take the uncertainty of a rookie vs what we had from Davis. If Diggs was not going to be a cancer and actually try, he has to be rated above Samuel. I like Samuel over Sherfield/Harty though. I don't think they are done, the big missing piece is the remaining WR. I think once that is brought in we can evaluate better. As it stands this is by far Beane's worst off-season. The Bills have one of the strongest armed QBs ever and have surrounded him with good dink and dunk personnel - c'mon Beane.
-
I've been believing/hoping the veteran trade was the plan all along - and was rooting against our taking Franklin late because it would have ended the hope. My low end of expectations would be the OBJ/M Thomas FA route. Slightly above, but something I would have be fine with, is DHop. I think Beane may have bigger plans (although he is uncharacteristically saying the exact opposite). Give it a few months and he can claim he couldn't pass it up. He now has draft capital in the extra 2nd and 4th next year. They would have access to the June 1st Tre money and say Josh has helped out with a restructure. I don't think it could get them up to J Jeff but still a good WR - possibly an Aiyuk/Deebo/C Godwin/DJ Moore/D Metcalf range.
-
The talent we have is decent. And it would work for almost any QB. But therein lies the problem, Josh Allen is not any QB! Give the man two legitimate outside WRs! Stop trying to have Josh outdo Brock Purdy and Mac Jones/Zach Wilson with the dink and dunk. Brady made do with what he had last year. He adjusted the offense to hide G Davis who singlehandedly got Dorsey fired. Brady was also given permission to unleash Josh's running- which was a decision made during desperate times. But in order to properly judge J Brady's abilities he should be supplied with a full arsenal of weapons. This should include one top tier veteran WR (sorry C Samuel). Then the offense should be dynamic, and if it then isn't Brady should be held accountable.
-
Good to see someone on board. While Beane may not want to spend draft capital and big money, he will have access to both. The Bills now have an extra 2 and 4th and will have Tre money and a possible Josh restructure to fund one. A good WR is the critical add this off-season. I want better than OBJ
-
The only top quality player the Bills need is good WR. Then to me, this isn't a rebuild it is a transitional contender. But yes, if Beane does not get another good WR then I agree Beane's off-season grade is a failure. And it doesn't matter if it works out, which it could, because Beane's job is to get the talent in here - he is not responsible for the on field My hope has been Beane is on schedule with his plan- he has always planned on trading for a WR and not getting two in this draft makes perfect sense.

This Will Be The Make Or Break Year For This Regime
Einstein's Dog replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall
This year is not continuing to do things the same way. You would have a much stronger case if the Bills didn't make the playoffs last year. That must have hurt for you. And of course, the season doesn't start for months, so maybe the roster isn't complete. -
I would like a better WR than those on the FA list so that would require a trade, probably after June 1. So while I don't mind OBJ it would be a little disappointing to me in that it would mean we probably wouldn't trade for one (kind of like I was glad we didn't pick up a second WR in the draft - same reasoning). Then Hyde in a mentoring role. A DE would be nice. And I'm surprised how dried up the FA RBs became. I thought we could use a cheap vet RB but I don't see any.
-
The question should not be what unit you have to have - because none are needed to win an SB (not even QB). The question should be what would help your particular team the most. The Bills have Josh a generational QB with one of the best 25-30 yard laser arms ever - a good WR room should be a priority. I'm still hoping a move is made. They only took one WR so it could be saving the spot. They have extra picks next year as draft capital, Tre money and possible Josh restructure. The Beane denials could be just keeping expectations low. Plus any move might not be done quickly.
-
A different way to look at WR1 is to say it's your best WR on the team. And currently the Bills WR1 is pathetic compared to the rest of the league. An offense that has Josh should have a good WR core. Josh has the best 25-30 yard laser passing in the game today (maybe ever?). Get Josh a better WR that we can call a WR1. Beane lost Diggs who was our best WR and we should get a new best. Then it is easy to think K Coleman is better than G Davis, Samuel is better than Sherfiled/Harty while Shakir and Kincaid are both better with a year of experience. Our WR room can be better than last year with the acquisition of a WR on the level of Diggs last year.
-
I guess I'll have to listen to Beane's presser. Beane is notorious for setting the bar low but you're the second one to say that Beane said no trade is coming.
-
Respectfully, what are you talking about? I was quite clear, transitioning is not the same as a rebuild. I have not heard Beane specifically saying what you are claiming. There is a thread below wondering who Beane was alluding to when he said "We worked out a guy today we are going to end up signing". I think you may be interpreting something you heard or read in your negative light - much like you did when you used the words transition with rebuild.
-
A transition is not the same as a rebuild. Look at this team with an Aiyuk on it. It has a better WR room than last year. And another rookie WR would be a waste, slotted in behind Aiyuk/Coleman/Samuel and Shakir.
-
The quote is taken out of context, the team is transitioning because it lost a lot of the veterans and new people are going to need to step up. It seems by all accounts the Bills have drafted a lot of quality high character players. And even the depth pieces are quality. I took the drafting of just one WR as a good sign. It signals to me they are keeping room for a veteran addition. No rookie could be reasonably expected to replace Diggs. Getting another rookie like Franklin in the 3rd would have signaled to me a rebuild. The Bills still have a spot for the veteran. They have 2025 draft capital to get one. They have Tre money coming in along with another possible Josh restructure for 2024 funds along with no more Diggs as a way to justify future year payments.
-
True, but I think the Bills need another good player at the WR spot. It's an area where I believe you should have talent. Now with Samuel/Shakir/ and Coleman they can use one more major contributor. And I think having 2 rookies out of those key 4 WRs would make it a rebuild year.
-
The draft did hit needs but the trade downs made it feel controlled and not panicked. And the trades down look like they knew exactly who was intended as the target and they didn't want them (Worthy at 28, Legette at 32). So the moves down look well thought out. I agree with most everyone else that the WR spot is at a huge downgrade year over year as it stands now. If K Coleman is the G Davis replacement and C Samuel is the Sherfield replacement the WR room could be upgraded. But that means getting a Diggs replacement and that is not a rookie- so it will be interesting to me to see if they go full rebuild mode by drafting Franklin or keeping the spot open to fill with a veteran.
-
The difference, to me, is you have settled to call this a "semi-transitional" year. I don't think we need to do that. In order to avoid the "semi-transitional" year we should add a veteran WR. The draft is for the future (and by the way, that is what Shakir was about). We definitely should add a WR for the future (and with an early round pick hopefully get earlier returns so they can be useful this year), And IMO start doing so on a more regular basis. For 2024 though, A WR veteran is easily >5th rounder. I give the DHop example but many others qualify. Beane can, and should, assemble a WR room that gets the Bills back to a talent level that is not considered "transitional".
