WR trade candidates, who do you want?
Einstein's Dog replied to Einstein's Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall
Of course they will. The Bills do not have a WR1 on the roster for 2024, or for that matter for 2025. The Bills have draft capital - extra 2nd and 4th, money coming in - Tre $10M, and kept the spot open - didn't draft 2 and didn't hit FA hard. All signs point to picking up a good WR. -

DHop should be the least expensive of the options. He was a FA a year ago. Giving Tenn a 3rd or 4th should cover it. But the problem with several of the veteran options is the top WR spot would need to be addressed again quickly. They would be more rentals at this point for maybe two years. Whereas with a Metcalf or Aiyuk you would not expect to have this hole again for at least 3 years out. And if you get a Metcalf/Aiyuk type you would not be pining for the flake Diontae Johnson or underperforming J Jeudy. -

Common misconception. The Bills get $10M Tre money June 1st, also potential Josh restructure money. If you look at the salary aspects, none of those seem bad, it is the future money where the expense will be, and the Bills have room in the future. -
WR trade candidates, who do you want?

To me the WHO is someone who is expected to be at least as good as Diggs in 2024. That is the bar that Beane needs to hit to try for year over year improvement. And yes, a trade for a top tier WR pulls the whole actions together - the letting Diggs go, only drafting one WR in a loaded draft, no major FA pickups. It all comes together with this one move. -

McLaurin could be put in the Darkhorse category, salary $15M, age 29. While meeting the level of 2024 Diggs quality it is hard to see Washington giving away their top WR, leaving them with just Dotson and the new 4th rounder Luke. Would be a tough spot for their rookie QB. -
A good number of our fans (including myself) are expecting a post June 1st trade for a WR. This WR should be of at least the quality of the expected 2024 Diggs. Listed below are who I feel are the top contenders: 1. DK Metcalf - rumored to be on the market, salary $13M, age 27. Big, fast, would be great addition. 2. B Aiyuk - previously rumored to be on the market and would make sense because SF has a lot of high priced WRs and drafted one in Round 1. Salary $14M, age 26. Downside is looking for big payday. 3. D Hopkins - Tenn has glut of WRs. Salary around $13M (maybe less based on how the $8M salary + $4M roster bonus is distributed). age 32. 4. D Adams - Raiders are going to stink and have no QB, Adams contract is such that this looks like his last year w $44M next year. Salary $17M, age 32. Dark Horse candidates 5. DJ Moore - former Carolina pick, salary $16M, age 27 6. C Kupp - salary $15M, age 31 7. C Godwin - salary $20M, age 28 The combination of draft capital and salary needed to be given for each listed WR makes is hard to figure out which way to go. Lets hope Beane makes one happen.

Who is Burden? I'm with you, get the trade for the top WR. I think the main choices are Aiyuk, DK Metcalf. D Adams, DHop.
-
You know what makes me feel better about the draft? Imaging it was done with the intent to trade for an impact WR after 6/1. Then just drafting 1 WR makes sense, even in a deep WR draft. Because If you got two you're just crowding up the Shakir/Samuel/Coleman mix. As for the RB in the 4th, I have no problems with that. Get one that you like there because you may have use for him this season. And if he pans out you can just let J Cook play out his contract and try to get a comp pick.
-
You are an elementary capologist. The flexibility of salary manipulations is vast. Once the $10M is in Beane can go to work easily. For instance look at DHop's 2023 salary, $1.8M, yet we all know he is getting about $13M a year. With the Tre $10M + Josh restructure the Bills can do it. If they don't address the top tier WR this year, guess what is projected to be the top concern in 2025 - that's right a top tier WR. Who is currently the most expensive playmaker that Josh has, Knox at his reduced salary or C Samuel at his paltry $8M? Ridiculous. So many people like yourself seem to have bought in that this team doesn't need a quality top tier WR. The Bills already have enough of a pool of decent WRs they don't need some middle of the road manageable veteran. They need to add a top level addition - the FA crop does not satisfy that need (nor did another rookie).
-
We want a WR that projects to be better than Diggs in 2024- DHop qualifies. Did you watch Tenn at all last year? We have young talent- Shakir/Coleman and Kincaid, what we need is a proven 1000+ veteran WR.
-
Yes, you can call it taking away playing time or call it breaking in a rookie. And the time you want your rookie to have his least amount of playing time is the beginning of the season. That's when a big learning curve takes place. Secondly, the Bills WR room is paper thin. Not having 4 decent WR's is grounds to have someone sue Beane, just criminally bad. And if you wait you run the risk of Tenn having a WR injury and no longer wanting to deal. A trade should be done prior to the season. The DHop possibility was already mentioned and the odds increased with this move. But Beane is doing his due diligence. What's it take to get DHop vs DK Metcalf vs D Adams. One of them before the season begins - lets not worry about stunting the development of our secondary WRs.
-
I don't think your take on the cap hit to us is correct. The cap hit for Tenn does not transfer over- just like our cap hit for Diggs wasn't Houston's problem. The salary goes in a trade which looks nice for DHop <10M.
-
I think when Tenn got Ridley the writing was on the wall for DHop. The new coach got a top WR he wants. And now Tenn has Ridley, DHop, Boyd and the first round pick T Burks. That's too much investment in the WR room.
-
We get $10M from the Tre move. And with a Josh restructure could get the rest. Plus by trading for him you can do some cap games if you extend him a year. Seems very doable in my mind.
-
I want him before then, get DHop after June 1st. Hoping it's all preplanned. Tenn just got rid of some salary if they move DHop for Boyd. And we could throw Tenn a 4th, extend DHop's a year to make it 2 years
-
If you didn't listen to Beane and instead looked at the actions, all signs point to a trade. Got rid of top WR and second outside WR and only drafted one (a very reasonable G Davis replacement- upgrade even IMO) Accumulated draft capital for 2025 - extra second and extra fourth Didn't hit the FA WR market hard. Have money coming in after June 1st for Tre. Didn't max out Josh restructure. So for a person like me who doesn't put much stock in what Beane says, the trade market offers a lot more than these FA rejects. D Adams, DK Metcalf, Dhop, DJ Moore, K Allen, C Godwin, D Samuel, B Aiyuk- all excite me more than that FA garbage.
-
Have you been following the Bills? The regime gave young Josh a surefire good WR in Diggs. Then last year gave him the top/first TE in the draft. This year they gave him a WR with their first pick. Do you really believe Josh didn't know about the Diggs situation? It seems a large portion of that move was done for the benefit of Josh. And finally, I don't think the regime is done with personnel this year. They'll probably add another good WR for him. There is no scenario with Josh leaving anytime soon.
-
For Chicago I thought it might be overkill at the WR position. The move for DJ Moore was in combination with other moves. K Allen was before they selected Rome. They might want to fast track Rome to grow with the rookie QB. Rome is in a worse situation than K Coleman at the moment and was drafted much higher.
-
It's ridiculous to rule out a trade. Lets not buy into Beane's smokescreens. Look at the situation, a pathetic WR room, plenty of draft capital and money being available after June 1st. The Bills didn't pick up 2 rookie WRs in the draft, and didn't take any of the better FA WRs-did you ever wonder why?. It was always the plan to trade for one. Trade options are a far better discussion. D Metcalf is rumored available - part of trading draft capital will be for getting Metcalf's relatively cheap salary , $16M. DHop would seem another option, $13M and could extend him another year and play all kinds of cap games. Shouldn't take as much draft capital to get him because Tenn picked him up on the open market. B Aiyuk/D Samuel would probably be at the upper end- but solid possibilities. DJ Moore/K Allen - Chicago has too many WRs that would hamper the opportunity of a top 10 pick (Rome). This is the quality of WRs we should be discussing. Any one of those additions totally reshapes the Bills WR room.

Top 5 QB and Top 5 WR salary cannot coexist on a SB team
Einstein's Dog replied to Big Blitz's topic in The Stadium Wall
And as far as it pertains to the Bills, trading for a good WR wouldn’t necessarily mean the WR is top 5 in salary. Metcalf is $16M and DHop is at $1M. -
You don't construct teams headed by the likes of J Goff or B Purdy the same way if you have a Josh "Freakin" Allen! Josh is arguably one of the best ever at firing 25-30 yard downfield lasers. And the boundary WRs that are penciled in for 2024 for this extreme talent are 1 rookie? Are you kidding me? I don't believe it actually, but a lot of you do and are seemingly fine with it. I can only hope that the lack of uproar over the pathetic WR group doesn't affect the FO and they decide they can get away with rolling this mess out.
-
I was more confident until I started to consider the T Pegula economics. Without Kim he may be more willing to go with a relatively inexpensive rebuild year. And for the FO, McB's get a non-pressure low expectation year. But yeah, why the fans would be on board is baffling. Get Josh a good WR group!
-
I agree, to keep his placement as a top GM in my mind, this all comes together with a trade for a top tier WR. If a trade doesn't happen this is by far Beane's worst off-season in his tenure. True, lots of people think the current state is fine. I'm not one of them. The youth movement was hopefully the reset. Having one expensive playmaker (outside of the QB) is entirely reasonable - currently we only have $8M C Samuel, it's an inexpensive offense. The longshots still make sense because you want to improve the back end of the roster too. And you need a lot of camp bodies anyway.
-
Why would you think Beane has a poor feel for quality? The past 4 years he has made rational moves to try and get incrementally better. The entire off-season can all make sense with really just the one move - a trade for a top tier WR. Then only taking one WR in a loaded WR draft makes sense. Letting Diggs go can be justified and makes sense (cancer in the locker room, bad leader). Not picking up a semi-decent washed vet -like OBJ or M Thomas makes sense (would inhibit new rookie and Shakir/C Samuel). The WR room would look better than last years. Year over year the WR room looks better with this one addition. Beane has stated he never wanted to waste a year of Josh. This one move is by far the biggest move to keep the Bills in the upper status that they have been in the last few years. The Bills will have some money to use (Tre and Josh restructure) and draft capital (extra 2+4) next year. If the Bills don't do a trade for a really good WR the problem will still exist for next years off-season, why would a rational GM wait? Beane has been an extremely rational and sensible GM. For the reasons above, I have been expecting Beane to make a trade for a good WR.

Realistic "Transition Year" Expectations
Einstein's Dog replied to Wizard's topic in The Stadium Wall
If they don't address the top concern, WR, then when a 2025 analysis is done it seems that will still be a concern.
