1/18 Texans @ Chiefs divisional playoff thread
FireChans replied to Steptide's topic in The Stadium Wall
If I had to do a "blame pie" Stroud gets the majority imo. He had next to zero pocket presence or urgency after that great 3rd Q drive. Every drive, he was patting the ball waiting and waiting. Now maybe Spags had everyone locked up down field all game, but I doubt it. And the coaches should have adjusted to help him out when he was getting killed drive after drive. -
So the offensive collapse in Houston is McD’s collapse, yes?

Two things can be very true. The Chiefs can be beneficiaries of bad calls close to the tops of the league, particularly in high exposure or high leverage games. Fans that hate the Chiefs hyperfixate on those calls because they hate the Chiefs. The Pats used to get a bunch of garbage calls with Brady and co too. It’s the way the league operates. Reputation influences the refs like everyone else. It’s why Sauce Gardener getting a rep of being a shut down corner led to refs sticking their flags in their pockets early and often. It’s why Jerry Hughes would get flagged for celebrating with his team mates or whatever BS they could drum up. It’s why Josh and Mahomes get flags when they get looked at funny. I don’t blame the Chiefs for trying to get calls. I hate them for it because they are a rival team but I don’t blame them. And I love when Josh does it because it does affect the game. If the Bills get out of this weekend, the Chiefs game next week will be pretty fairly called imo, because we have a team with a closer perception to KC than any other in the league. The Texans don’t. -
Aren’t you a big “the HC gets all the credit and blame because it’s all his responsibility?” guy? If so, McD collapsed because the offense was terrible in the second half, the moment was too big for Josh and co, they were playing wild and out of control and puked all over themselves after a first half shut out in a game that they should have probably won. I know it’s fun to say “it was Josh and offenses” fault, not McD’s!” when it’s convenient, but it’s not really honest work imo.

That’s true but there’s a corollary. A toolsy guy like Rousseau may take a couple years to hit his stride, but if he does, you have no problem giving him a massive deal. It’s the limited ceiling, good or solid but not great, guys that you let walk or risk overpaying dramatically for their impact. To me, I would much rather bet on the upside over the floor. I think stars win games in the NFL. There’s a place for drafting role players too, and once you get to the late rounds it’s a complete crapshoot anyway. It’s not about age like it is for running backs though. It’s partly about ceiling. Every QB needy team in the NFL doesn’t want the next Dak or Goff or Cousins. They want the next Josh or Mahomes type guy. I think that’s not a bad desire to have, but it’s not realistic. Those guys come around every 10 years. There’s still a true line of QB’s that are worth paying.

Seriously. i mean Bo Nix wasn’t just undraftable at Auburn. He wasn’t “invite to camp” worthy imo. Part of it is marrying his skillset in a system like Payton’s. He’s being maximized to a degree and his ceiling is probably not that high. I don’t think he is going to be HoF bound. But if you told me back in 2019 he would lead an NFL team to 10 games and a WC appearance as a rookie, I wouldn’t have believed you for a second.
-
to your point, imo, Jayden and Nic had zero chance in the NFL if they were 2 or 3 year guys in college. i said this pre draft and I’ll say it again. Their success is a complete referendum on how wrong the league views and develops QBs.
-
Dude yes. I drafted him in a deep sleeper league like 3 years ago just waiting for him to take over as a #2 in Washington. He has finally put something together. I don't have a clue what his market will be. I wouldn't touch him for Curtis Samuel money.

I would prefer a coach who doesn’t completely ***** up an easy end of game situation over one who does and has to take the blame. Personally.

It’s because Josh Allen is so good, Mahomes rises to the occasion. some folks actually believe this.

What? They had to get a stop and score a Td regardless. -
Personally, this Ravens matchup is my "McDermott Game."

What? we had a better chance on hitting first round QB’s? what? are you under the impression we had a better chance of finding a Josh Allen level QB than we do finding an HC that could win a Super Bowl with a Josh Allen level QB? -

FireChans replied to Rigotz's topic in The Stadium Wall
No there’s not. There was no guarantee we would find a QB better than Tyrod. We still tried. -

You are correct. Allen is doing everything he can do. We should obviously not get rid of him. how else can we improve the team’s success? -

I think he's saying the coach, GM and QB can't be all among the best in the league when we have played in 1 AFCCG in a blowout loss in the last 5 seasons. -

Mutiny? Coaches get fired all the time in the NFL. Players get cut. It's a business. BB can choose to retain Brady/Kromer/Babich or let them go if he wants. Brady is gonna be gone sooner rather than later its looking like regardless. Babich is a rookie DC. You are putting a lot on these secondary coaches. How many OC's and DC's and OL coaches have we had to have our season end in the divisional round lol -

I don't think comparing BB's record without Brady to McD's coaching record with Josh is very fair lol. For example, McD's has a losing record without Josh. McD has zero SB appearances without Josh. The plan to hire BB would not be to "start over." It would be the exact opposite. It would be a short-term move to try get a ring while Josh is still in his physical prime. -

Belichick. If we are going into this playoff gauntlet of Ravens then likely Chiefs then likely Eagles/Lions, who would you rather have coaching? -
I’ve read how it works 5 years running. You are still basing all of your work off wAV. And wAV is a JAG/end of the roster fluff machine. As evidenced by the JAG/end of the roster fluff machine. Your stat that is the crux of your argument ranks a Boogie Basham bust sucky player as an infinitely better contributor than someone who doesn’t make the team or see the field. Which we know is not true. There are a trillion Boogie-tier guys in the NFL or on the couch. Our drafts probably look better with your methodology because Hamlin has started 2 years due to injury and the safety room sucking. He still sucks. Gonna have a better wAV though.

I would argue the 16th or 18th highest paid DT and the 26th highest paid defensive lineman being ranked 135th in the NFL in sacks and 169th in TFL's is perhaps slightly overpaid @GunnerBill
-
Spotrac is being weird https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/player/_/year/2024/position/dt/sort/contract_average This has Ed at 16 in 2024. This has Ed at 12 in 2023.
-
That's because he signed 2 years ago.... He was the 6th highest paid DT in AAV in 2023. He is the the 9th highest paid DT in AAV in 2024. He will be the 16th highest paid DT in AAV in 2025. That's like saying Josh Allen is underpaid because Kirk Cousins hit FA last offseason and Josh signed his extension 3 years ago. That's not how it works. Ed got top 6 money when he was extension eligible. He has not been top 6 money worthy. Point blank. Period. Gunner thinks Singles is a total JAG too lmao. You lost the race before you could even tie your shoes.
-
Drafts lose value as the years go on. The reason why 2024 has "contributors" and 2021 does not is because its currently 2024. In 2019, you could have said "this was such a great draft, we got 4 starters and 3 backups/contributors! Only one guy didn't make the team!" Looking at 2019 now, we have only 2 guys still on the team, and both are overpaid. Singletary was a JAG RB. Ford was a disaster shipped off at the first opportunity. Ed is good but not quite good enough. And Dawson Knox was such a starter that despite being paid a top 10 TE contract at the time of signing, the team turned around and traded up in the first round to send him to the bench. We are gonna have "contributors" from each new draft every year. The old "contributors" will be cut, traded or not re-signed and largely out of the league. That's the reality of the league economy.
-
It's a tremendous weak spot. Benford's wAV is 12. Spector, Boogie Basham and Elam combined wAV is 15. Any methodology that has the contributions of those 3 players as superior to Christian Benford's contribution is largely meaningless tbh.
