What RI Bills Fan said - I'd like to see our starting O score a TD (or 2). Some points from our starting D would be a nice bonus, otherwise a takeaway (or 2). Better play from our special teams - especially return coverage. Other than all that, no injuries... GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!!

As much as I like Chan and believe in his offensive game planning and play-calling talents, I still wish we'd bring in Leach in some capacity - OC, QBs coach, quality control, or maybe just 'guy in charge of providing entertaining quotes / belittling the opposition' (Latest scuttlebutt has Leach as a leading candidate to replace Howard Schnellenberger at FAU, who's retiring after this season, but personally I see The Pirate landing at UCLA next season.) I agree that Chan will mix things up on offense this season, keeping the games both competitive and exciting. A 'gadget play' thrown in here and there is always entertaining, especially when you catch your opponent flat-footed and red-faced - and the occasional trick play keeps the other guys 'on their toes' can even sometimes relieve the pressure from a [perceived or real] deficient O-line. JMO. GO BILLSSS!!!!

Just Caught The First Half
The Senator replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Great talking points, Bill - Love Fitz, but still say we shoulda drafted Mallett and developed him for 2-3 seasons... Mallett Shines in Patriots Preseason Opener (IMO, his size and arm strength make him one of the most unique QB prospects we could have nabbed - our W-L record will be too good to even think about Luck or Jones in 2012. Now we'll have to wait for Chad Kelly in 2016 ) Regardless of Bears OL, Bills D got HUGE in just one off-season. Linemen AND LBs are noticeably bigger, as are d-backs. I don't see those guys getting pushed back or being last against the run this season. The Merriman acquisition is HUGE. Dareus will be the best of the 2011 draft crop. Buddy needs to bring in some veteran help for O-line depth. Max Starks and Brian Waters are both available and worth a look. Like it or not (I actually do), I expect we'll see a lot of gadget plays from both Brad Smith and Josh Nesbitt. GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!! -
There are actually folks that thought Brohm should start??? Now Levi Brown, OTOH... "He is the most popular guy in town, beloved and flawless, a magic pill who could solve everything if only the coach would just come to his senses..." (Link - The Life of the Backup Quarterback) .

I keep thinking - or hoping, what with Gailey's KC-connection and Doug Wahley's Steelers ties - that Waters and Starks are logical candidates and that they'll be showing up at OBD soon. (Can't hurt to see what kind of shape they're in, and what's left 'in the tank'.) Latest is that Cowboys may be interested in Waters, a 5X Pro Bowl guard. Don't know what's going on with Starks - supposedly way overweight, but a 6' 8" 370 lb. OT with 7 years experience protecting Roethlisberger sounds like a guy we should at least give an audition.

50 years ago today, the Berlin Wall goes up
The Senator replied to Just Jack's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Went up under Kennedy's nose and - though it came down on Bush 41's watch - met it's demise (as did the rest of the Soviet Union) in one Ronald Reagan. Interesting opinion column by George Will this morning - JFK’s blundering on Berlin -

College Football - Do You Follow a Team? A Conference?
The Senator replied to ajzepp's topic in College Football
You can't beat the excitement or the passion of college football, IMO, and I try to follow most major programs - mainly to keep abreast of the top NFL prospects. Mostly, though, I follow the Big 12 (now Big 12 minus 2 and possibly on the verge of implosion if A&M and Missou bolt to the SEC) and the Texas Tech Red Raiders - even though they gave my guy Leach the bum's rush for not coddling spoiled little Adam James and kowtowing to his lying little league dad and habitual Big 12 program wrecker Craig - mainly because I can't get this play out of my mind, or the bewildered look on poor Colt McCoy's face immediately afterwards... Wreck 'em, Tech!!!! Guns Up!!!!! -
Did you grow up in Bflo in the 60s-70s?
The Senator replied to WWVaBeach's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I met Dave Thomas (né David Thomas Boreanaz) a few years ago at a Bishop Fallon HS HOF banquet held at Salvatore's - super nice guy who also worked as a TV weatherman by the name Dave Roberts in Philadelphia. His son David played 'Angel' in Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series and now stars in the TV crime drama series Bones. -

The spread offense will never work in the NFL - I know this because I read it many times right here on TSW. (The 'spread' is even more unusable in the pros if the QB lines up in the shotgun, according to the experts.) PS: the Hitler video - hilarious!

The official Get 'R Done Thread (OL)
The Senator replied to Billsnutt's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm a bit surprised at that myself - recent articles seem to indicate he wants to finish his career in Dallas... Needing OL Help, Cowboys Sniffing Around Former Local Star Brian Waters Am also a bit puzzled why our AGM Doug Whaley hasn't used his Steelers connections and brought in OT Max Starks for a look. As for Ugoh, just say no.... Indianapolis Colts Top 10 Draft Busts And Successes In Franchise History: Tony Ugoh . -
Interesting comment - I thought Wang was held in high regard at VT... Wang attended Virginia Tech and was awarded 2009 All-ACC Second Team for his performance at left tackle for the Hokies. He was given the nickname, "Godzilla" due to his aggressive playing style, size, and Asian heritage. Scouting reports seem to confirm that he's a 'project' but not without potential... The other Gailey connection that could make Levi Brown 'odd-man out' is Joshua Nesbitt... As Taylor Bennett's backup, Nesbitt was brought in for rushing during his freshman season under coach Chan Gailey. In 2008, Nesbitt earned the starting quarterback job under new Tech coach Paul Johnson for his option offense. The 2009 season saw Nesbitt rush for 1037 yards and 18 touchdowns. Nesbitt also had 1701 yards through the air with 10 touchdowns. He led the Yellow Jackets to an ACC Championship Game and a BCS bowl game. The Jackets finished the season with an 11-3 record following the 2010 FedEx Orange Bowl loss to Iowa. Nesbitt was honored as the 2009 ACC first team quarterback. (Turn down the rap soundtrack on this video if you are bothered by 'urban poetry' - couple of 'f-bombs' buried in there near the end!)

Anyone think Brady & Sanchez got a little nervous
The Senator replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Brady* has always been a whining crybaby of a NancyBoy - as anyone who remembers this play from October 2006 will attest... Trailing 7-3 in the first quarter, Buffalo's defense stopped New England's offense on a third-and-10 play. Lining up at the Bills' 21-yard line, Pats quarterback Tom Brady saw no open receivers and elected to concede a sack, sliding on the ground. Buffalo defensive end Chris Kelsay was penalized for unnecessary roughness for delivering a late hit on Brady, who had given himself up by falling to the turf on third down at the Bills 24. So Brady* "had already given himself* up" when he* saw Chris Kelsay bearing down on him*. Chris Freakin' Kelsay!!!! (Basically, if you don't remember it, Marcia* just took a seat on the turf and waited for the ref to blow the whistle.) And there's this remark by her* own teammate... Maybe Rodney Harrison said it best, "Tom Brady*, if you're listening, take off the skirt and put on some slacks." (Link - Roughing The Passer Rule Needs To Change: Why Tom Brady Needs to Stop Complaints) Now what's Marcia* gonna think when she* sees Kyle Williams, Marcel Dareus, and 'Lights Out' Merriman coming at her* full bore? I think she'll* be stocking up on these... -
Cut Wang? Because we're so deep at OT already??? (Link - Sporting News - Buffalo Bills training camp: Demetrius Bell injury exposes depth issues) After going undrafted in 2004, Jason Peters was signed, then cut, then re-signed to the Bills practice squad - and didn't crack the starting lineup until 2006, his 3rd season. The Bills will - and should - give Wang his sophomore season to see how he develops. In the meantime, maybe our Steelers-connected Ass't GM Doug Whaley could give former Pittsburgh OT Max Starks a call. Starks has played both the RT and LT positions, protecting Roethlisberger for the last 7 years and, overweight or not, I can't imagine Starks being any worse than the trio of Eric Pears/Jason Watkins/Cordaro Howard. .

This happens every season...
The Senator replied to Quinn Early's Ghost's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Excellent points, Dr. D - the Bills F.O. did go all out to sign Tyson Clabo, but I don't think he wanted to leave the Falcons or cause any further disruption in the lives of his brother's 2 young children that Clabo and his wife just recently adopted... Link - Football field or family life, Falcons' Clabo protects those around him (Good for Clabo - to say that what he and his new wife are doing is admirable would be quite an understatement, IMO.) Given Buddy's "draft 'em and develop 'em yerself" philosophy, maybe Chan & Buddy think Hairston will come around quickly, or are hoping UDFA Rich Lapham's knee will magically heal before the season starts? Personally, I am wondering why Nix and our Steelers-connected Ass't GM Doug Whaley don't go after Max Starks, whom the Steelers cut in a cap-room move. I know he's coming off neck surgery and supposedly he's overweight (he's 6'8" and I think he plays at around 370) but he's done a decent job protecting Roethlisberger over the years and, at 29 years old, might still have a little something left 'in the tank'. Plus, he can play both OT positions, and has, which would give the Bills some much-needed depth. At least bring him in for a look, and maybe put him on PUP 'til he's back in game shape? An in-shape Max Starks would be an upgrade to what we have now, I think... Git 'er done, Buddy! You tell 'em, AJ! Here's something to be positive about... Bears quarterbacks were sacked nine times, and the starting offense mustered only 10 yards — when Jay Cutler was flushed out of the pocket and scrambled for a first down. (Link - Bears’ offensive line fails to impress in 10-3 win over Bills) That was, after all, the Bears' offense that played in the NFC title game 8 months ago. I'm happy taking that from last night's game, and building on it as the pre-season progresses... GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!! . -
