The plausibility of NE getting the ball back with time to run multiple plays was much higher than the probability of your 250lb QB getting hurt right there.
We're flirting with elimination scenarios and it is no time to dick around and call a scared game.

Just making sure everybody is on the same page with the QB change and there are going to be no unexpected disasters with snap counts, exchanges, personnel, formations, etc.
There was zero downside and nothing dumb about it.
NE is an extremely well-coached defense but they're a little green.
I'd like to see Brady push the pacing some (as would Allen, I bet) and not fall into the Dorsey trap of being too deliberative between snaps.
