You can have mixed coverages, which typically might be man coverage underneath and zones over the top. Or you can flip your corners to make sure the CB you want is on the WR you want him covering (i.e. Tre White chasing Davante Adams to the other side of the field at times). But trying to run an effective zone while pulling one of your guys to man somebody up is probably going to compromise your defense in a way that makes it not worth it. Just too many people to cover on too many parts of the field to do it efficiently, imo.

I just watched the Bills 3 RBs and 2 TEs combine for a grand total of about 30yrds receiving (or about 6 yrds per player) because they're busy spending half the game playing RT. It's a problem just about every week, regardless of whether they win.

The suggestion that he's shown improvement is not in any way a "fact".

It continues to be the same problem that has been plaguing them for three years, and that problem is Spencer Brown. I give them credit for the solid job they have done hiding him so far, but the fact that they continue to have to go out of their way to protect him every week is absolutely handicapping what should be a much more efficient offense. When you have to commit skill players to blocking roles that often, it's like they're playing 10 on 11 out there. If you wonder why Kincaid and Knox aren't having big impacts check and see how long it takes them to actually get into their routes when they have to spend extra time protecting Spencer Brown before they can leave the LOS. If you wonder where Damien Harris and Latavius Murray are, look how often they are being asked to cover Spencer Brown. Hell, the Bills are actually using Murray on the LOS just to engage DE's while Brown is still getting set up in pass pro. I really like Spencer Brown and am glad he is on the roster. You tell him to bury the guy in front of him on a 34 dive, and that's what he'll usually do. But he simply does not have the feet to be a complete OT in the modern NFL and is never going to. The necessity for the Bills to take skill players and put them on their heels to protect Brown instead of using them to attack defenses is making it impossible for them to maximize their offensive talent. And as long as they insist on putting a Tackle out there who can't play Tackle in this league, it's going to continue to be a problem all year. I'm not a GM and have no idea what the in-season solution could be, or if there is even one available. The time to address the issue was the offseason and they didn't do enough solve the problem. I'm not saying it is going to sink their season down the road, but it is certainly going to make things much harder then they needed to be on offense for the rest of this year.

Actually there is an argument to be made that the DL in particular has been less aggressive, with Epenesa doing a better job keeping contain as opposed to blindly attacking, McDermott running more zone dawgs than Frasier and dropping DLinemen into coverage more often, Jordan Phillips playing a less reckless, more controlled game, etc. But thanks anyways for the smarmy insult; it really helped support the argument you put forth with zero evidence or examples.

The last time we saw Frazier's defense it was missing Hyde/DJones/Benford/JPhillips, had Poyer/Oliver/TWhite out there wrapped in duct tape and has also since added LFloyd and Bernard. What they're putting out there now is a massive upgrade in skill over what we last saw out there under Frazier. I won't argue against your point that they are now running similar schemes a bit more downhill, but imo that adjustment pales in comparison to the upgrade in healthy players on the field.

At the risk of having tomatoes thrown at me, it wouldn't have to be very big.

Fwiw, I'm not seeing much difference at all in what McDermott is running vs what Frazier was running for McDermott. If trends continue we'll see a fair amount more blitzing this weekend as the Bills have tended to really break out multiple blitz packages specifically against the Dolphins over the last several years. From my perspective, the most glaring difference by far between McDermott's defense and Frazier's is that the Bills personnel is currently healthy.

That kid was a good ballplayer who got entirely too much undeserved crap from this fanbase. Hope he has an excellent and rewarding career wherever he may travel.

I wasn't referring as much to his velocity (which, you're right, is great) but more to how fast his release is. From the time he decides where it's going, to the time it actually leaves his hand is an eyeblink. I thought he walked into a sack on that Shakir throw and it ended up coming out so fast that I didn't even see him uncork it.

I'd think he was upset because it was a 4TD lead with 3 minutes left and the game was over. At that point everybody is just trying to get off the field healthy and Rapp going kamikaze on a meaningless play late in a decided game was unnecessarily dangerous.

I get it and kind of agree. But there's 225 and then there's 225, and they don't always look the same Fwiw, when the Bills paid Milano, my only concern was about his durability. That concern appears to have been unfounded and I hope it is this time as well.
