best Office Flip Out ever caught on tape
mcjeff215 replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in Off the Wall Archives
That's the truth. Working in an office environment can really suck the soul out of someone if it's not "healthy." It's amazing some of the dumb crap that people argue and bicker about in an office setting. I have a problem putting up with that crap too. When I get sick of it, I usually go on a crusade to get whatever the problem is fixed as opposed to kicking in monitors, though. -
best Office Flip Out ever caught on tape
mcjeff215 replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I had a guy get on my desk once and start kicking my papers off because I was taking "too long" to get something done. I told him that if he didn't get down I was going to climb up and 'knock his ass down.' I can believe it. I let it slide as it was a start-up environment and he was probably half joking. I buy this, honestly. -
Did anyone see the CBS Sunday Morning Special

I was going to post something about him a few weeks ago, but I really think someone might have already: Check these out: And his band before Journey got him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPK3-33ouhw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf-2Rk_uIPU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDhOYktUhyQ -
OT--I was a witness to a MAJOR domestic incident yesterday
mcjeff215 replied to Corp000085's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Perhaps that whole situation will serve as a catalyst for him to clean it up. He seriously should seek out some help, though. Kicking anything is easier when you've got help and the advice of someone that's been through it. That holds true for smoking, alcohol, harder drugs, and even habitual problems such as gambling. I'd mention that to him, just as a buddy in passing. -
OT--I was a witness to a MAJOR domestic incident yesterday
mcjeff215 replied to Corp000085's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Who called 911 after his son smashed him? It seems odd that the police didn't want to talk to the original caller? Especially when the caller said domestic dispute but the dad said fall. That sounds like a textbook case of "cover up the family violence." Perhaps the police didn't handle that one so well? Didn't anyone say 'dad just got the beat down' to the 911 operator initially? It's a tough situation, honestly. Clearly it's the last thing you want to be involved in due to a) family troubles are none of your business and b) it's a risk to you. On the other hand, how are you going to feel if next time Junior beats him to death with a Louisville? I would have probably done close to the same thing. I would have called, reported, and then stayed the hell out of the way. If they were to explicitly ask me what happened, I'd tell the story truthfully. I honestly would have probably told them what happened in detail on the phone. I've not seen anything like this, though I've seen guys punch their women in the mouth while working downtown on more than one occasion. It's amazing the type of stuff one sees from a 2nd floor smoking deck. Passers by don't even realize it. -
Video of LIVE ALIEN to be shown in Denver tomorrow
mcjeff215 replied to /dev/null's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Yeah, but that's the accepted 'what they look like' face. There are probably thousands of masks out there. As far as the grainy part goes? Your standard video camera has a 'in the dark' mode that looks very similar to that. My Sony looks almost just like that when I put it in low-light mode. That said, do I believe it? Nah. It's not that I think we're alone on our little rock here, it's that they're milking the monetary angle. If he really had some evidence, I'd think he'd be more 'bout getting it out than creating hype. -
Flyover Pictures of uncontacted tribe

Yup, you too can live to the ripe old age of 26. On an unrelated note, why the hell does every site have to use flash these days? They're pictures. I shouldn't need flash plugin to view pictures. I'd pay for a web-based utility that stripped the flash content out and presented it using static HTML. -
Now that's HOT! Tell me more, does she have her talk show haircut or her militant lesbian haircut?

The Top 50 causes of death, according to the
mcjeff215 replied to erynthered's topic in Off the Wall Archives
We had a couple guys at work ready to donate money for the cause at one time... they were pretty pissed off when we told them it was just water (computer guys -- lots of them wear their IQ on their sleeve). -
Yup, thanks guys! Beautiful weather it is... now I'm nice and sunburned! I had a friend drive up 6 hours to hang out today, couldn't have had a better day.

Aren't prescription and medication errors the most common mistakes made by doctors? What about a situation where a patient is on a blood thinner (or aspirin?) and then dies of a GI bleed? Does that count as a 'legal drug death?' -
How's your Spanish?

I'm in Cobb and it's a fairly nice place to live. Since you're going to teach in Douglasville, I'd highly recommend living over that way. The drive at 7:00AM would probably take you an hour and 10 minutes if you're in Cobb. There is a bar here (that Dank mentioned). I've yet to head down that way, but damn it, I intend to this year.

Which Vandals/Bad Religion? is Albatross the 'Vote with a Bullet' album? It may be easier for you to just pickup an adapter for your record player and rip the files yourself, honestly. A friend of mine did that with a ton of old Punk albums.

Ha =) I do this type of stuff: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&saf...amp;btnG=Search Generally system level stuff, large site scalability. I usually use the term 'Internet Infrastructure' to describe it. In terms of sites? I've used things like Django and some Struts (though I really dislike Java). Lots of Unix account provisioning, LDAP, blah blah blah...

I'm whizz-bang get it done when it comes to technical work, but I'm about as artistic as a rock when it comes to website creation. For my fellow techies.... my websites look good in lynx.

Yup, great show! Gotta wonder how 'screwed' they've been getting on the tour, though. Wonder if they really wind up playing shows for free like that?

I just checked to see if Pennywise was going to be in the Atlanta area anytime soon, hoping I'd pick tickets up and go. They're going to freaking be here *tomorrow* and we've company coming into town. Damn it. COC is great... toss in the Vandals, some DK (though I've never been that much of a fan)... and anything Mike Ness has been involved in.

The earlier stuff was, though as the decade progressed, people learned that flannel and angst made money. Though I don't know if it fits as "alternative", I've always loved Pennywise, NOFX, Face to Face, Pitchshifter... I guess that fits more into the punk bin, though. I felt the need to post here too as I'm a 90's kid.

Hell yes! Now, I'll make it a point to hit La Nova.

Two Buffalo men drown here in Florida
mcjeff215 replied to erynthered's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I quit 4 years ago now. I used to down almost two packs of those things every day. Took me two attempts. On the first, I stopped for about 6 months. I was driving home at night and passed a 7-11 or some such store. They had a sign out that read 'Marlboro lights 2.25 a pack.' I thought to myself, "wow, what a great price! I should buy some!" Well, that was that. I tried again about a year later. Just stopped. Cold turkey. Haven't smoked in four years now. I still get the odd cravings, though. Usually it's while drinking a beer or while sitting on the back porch drinking a cup of coffee. The hardest part about stopping was the mental piece. While at work, I'd always say to myself "I'm going to finish this piece of code, and then I'll go grab a smoke." It was almost like a reward system. When I made the decision to go cold turkey, I still did the same thing in my head.... but no reward! I still hung out with smokers. I didn't want to hide from them all and then fall off the bandwagon once I got a whiff of it. I used that damn gum the first time. That didn't work at all. While I'd only smoke one or two a day, I still kept my blood full of nicotine. The second I spit the gum out, I'd want nicotine from somewhere.... doesn't so much matter where! -

Another spring... another impending lay off...
mcjeff215 replied to SDS's topic in Off the Wall Archives
This reminds me... if you *do* heads towards the programmer realm, your interview process can be all over the place. I've had interviews where I've actually had to write software on an overhead in front of the group and I've had interviews where they've said 'if you say you know it, then you do.' I'm actually quite good at interviews (I do 'em every now and then to stay fresh). That HR android is an issue. Throwing in the correct buzzwords helps (as long as you can back it up with solid knowledge). -

It depends on what you mean by "that bad?" From an employment market point of view, it's so-so right now. It seems like there is a lot of hiring going on, but it's geared towards more senior guys that have been in the industry for 10 years or so. I get calls all of the time, but the more junior folks I work with have to settle for a lower salary and 'clean up work.' Still a lot of offshore outsourcing going on. You're not screwed with regards to the BS in CS and the array of certifications. Most places care more about experience than they do about your degree or your vendor approved rubber stamp. The exception (unfortunately) seems to be in the government contracting sector, which I'm sure is huge up where you are. So, while you can probably get into the field, expect to make a much lower salary while you earn that coveted IT experience. Also, expect that first IT related job to have more of a private sector "startup" atmosphere. -
One of the times my wife and I were there, we met a girl that grew up in Buff. She was more than happy to talk about it once she noticed my Sabres shirt. I think it was 2nd or 3rd floor, L&D triage.
