That’s what eventually wore Kaepernik down. It was plain to see that DCs were coaching their guys to hit him on every option play. If he was your key, you smacked him, regardless whether he kept the ball or not. That said, it’s hard to hit what you can’t catch and Jackson is just so elusive. But it’s only a matter of time before somebody gets that clean shot.

It’s going to happen eventually. The NFL has done a good job of getting unnecessary roughness out of the game, but if they tell defenses they can’t hit QBs even when they threaten a run there’s going to be a problem.

plus, there’s always a Burfict in the league

Sounds like a recipe for a lot of free 15 yds and 1st down "roughing" calls against your team.  Pitching the ball counts as a pass by NFL rules.

You're absolutely correct that an injury could derail it, but pocket passing QB get injured, too.

I think the sustainability issue is more around will defenses solve it and figure out a way to shut it down?  Because I think that happened in SF and in B'lo.

“When the passer goes outside the pocket area and either continues moving with the ball (without attempting to advance the ball as a runner) or throws while on the run, he loses the protection of the one-step rule provided for in (a) above, and the protection against a low hit provided for in (e) above, but he remains covered by all the other special protections afforded to a passer in the pocket (b, c, d, and f), as well as the regular unnecessary roughness rules”.

I couldn’t find the section that refers to pitches. Perhaps my interpretation is skewed by watching college ball, but in an option play the QB counts as a runner attempting to advance the ball. He’s fair game, particularly if running the ball close to the LOS.

I think that's selling Lamar Jackson way short, GoBills.  He is both a better passer and a better runner than TT.

But if your point is that Greg Roman has dusted off one of the best systems for a dual threat QB, plugged LJax into it and tweaked it to fit, you're right.

That system has had sustainability issues in the past. An injury could completely derail it. I’m reserving final thoughts until Jackson shows he can dominate a decent defense without running or somehow manages not to get hurt for years.... If I’m an opposing D coach I’m preaching option rules to my DEs.... Hit the QB every play, even if he pitches the ball.

I am siding with you on that though. Pessimistic but hoping it’s too early to tell. Great point that great players usually show it as rookies. That seems to ring true when you look around the league. WR may seem to be the only positional exceptional where it’s often year 2 or 3.

It offen takes offensive linemen and DTs 2 years to develop. DTs generally start flashing at the end of their rookie year. My take is Oliver hasn’t been bad, but every smaller DT not named Aaron Donald has taken 2-3 years to develop.... That includes Geno Atkins and John Randle. They need to master hand fighting technique.

Ford is a little more concerning, but he seems to be slowly improving. He’ll probably improve after an off-season in an NFL conditioning program. 19 bench reps at 6’ 3” is reason to believe he’s a bit behind in upper body strength which may contribute to technique issues. Plus, whether he’s truly a guard or a tackle remains to be seen. If he ends up being a damn good guard I’ll be happy with the pick.

How about instead of running Gore at the goal line on the same play 4 times in a row, run a play action pass to a TE that slips a block?  By definition, that was insanity.

How about when you have 2nd and goal, you don’t get cute with a WR jet run that loses 10 yards?  That’s a play for the middle of the field when you don’t have all 11 defenders within a few yards.

If you run the jet sweep there they should have tried it with Knox.... At least he can bowl over a safety and get back to the LOS.

I remember the 8-0 snow game where Moorman had a snap go flying over his head and he kicked it out the back of the end zone for a safety.  First 8-0 game in the NFL since something like 1927.

I remember the 6-3 game where Derek Anderson won the game for the Browns by completing 2 passes all afternoon for all of 23 yards.  Bleacher Report called that the "worst game ever" https://bleacherreport.com/articles/270428-worst-game-ever-buffalo-vs-cleveland-review

Weird stuff happens against the Browns.  I'm already losing sleep over it.

Maybe we’ll get to see OBJ and Baker get into a fight

Holy hyperbole.  Am I allowed to use someone that didn't set the NFL world on fire in his first year but then became great after?  Like Geno Atkins?

I’ll add Mike Daniels to that as well. Most of the successful “short” DTs take a season or two to really figure out how to play. Aaron Donald is certainly the exception rather than the rule.... Oliver is currently on pace to match John Randles rookie numbers. It’s gonna take some time for this kid to figure out hand fighting, block shedding and leverage at the NFL level.

Gore looked his age yesterday. That didn't help on those interior runs.

There are no easy answers to the 3rd quarter lulls, so I'll blame it on playcalling and execution.

If we're whining about playcalling, where are the explosive Allen runs? He hasn't broke a 20+ yarder all season.

There's no use calling his number if he'll get you 4 yards and a cloud of dust.

Calling the occasional run is worthwhile to keep the RPOs believable. Same with the jet sweeps. Now, calling so many of these is an issue.

    A couple interesting notes:

Allen has now played 8 3rd quarters this season. He has 291 passing yards in those 8 quarters. Some folks around here are clamoring for a 300 yard game, well that's 2 games worth of time and still not 300 yards!

We've passed the ball 146 times in the first half and only 97 times in the second half. Maybe some data to back up the taking our foot off the gas arguments? If you include Allen's rush attempts he's had 200 attempts for 1094 yards in the first half and 125 attempts for 688 yards in the second half. 75 fewer attempts in the second half seems like a lot...

I’d be curious to see the pass to run ratios for each quarter and the defensive averages by quarter.

As for 300 yard games... I’m not overly concerned about that. I’d much rather see Allen consistently put up 225-250 yards with a 2:1 TD/INT ratio, especially if he’s adding another 35-50 yards on the ground and the occasional rushing TD. I’m pretty sure a fair amount of folks here will find a way to belittle a 300 yard game even if it on loves Allen beating Mahomes in a shootout. ?

Yea, it's been a season long issue, so they don't get the benefit of the doubt for the last two wind games.

Weird things happen in 3rd quarters too.... it's just all stuck in second gear.  We had a great drive to start the half and then sputter, turn over on downs, in FG range.  Then we have a 50/50 ball... obvious PI... not called... punt.

Bottom Line, they just need to be better.  We can't play 3 quarters of football every week and expect to continue this run.

It’s a concern that weird things happen in the 3rd every game. I’m not sure what’s off, but there’s enough of a track record to start guessing.

3rd quarters are clearly an issue.  Nobody can debate that.  It is worth pointing out that the past 2 games in a row, we've been going into heavy winds in the 3rd quarters.  Not an excuse, but perhaps something worth noting.

Wind may have contributed. IMO the problem comes from Daboll being slow to adapt his playcalling to exploit new weaknesses in the opposing teams halftime scheme adjustments. He’s not recognizing it. It seems like he doesn’t adapt until he gets feedback from players and some photos... It’s an issue, and I don’t think it improves till Allen is able to correctly change plays at the line.

The Denver game is my “Billy’s loss”. Baltimore is playing us after a stretch of Texans, Rams, and 49ers. I expect them to get beat up a bit, particularly against SF. I think we have a good chance to win a close one at home. Cowboys have a similar situation playing two NFCN teams and the Pats right before us. I think this team comes out amped up for their only nationally televised game (minus a bills/pats flex possibility).
