One second…. When the Oline actually gave Allen that extra time he often managed to find Sanders and Diggs. They had no real answers for that pass rush though, and there seem to be issues with talent, communication, consistency, coaching, and playcalling.

Well, he would have been our best offensive lineman yesterday.

Oh, the coaching is definitely not a benefit. Thing is, I’m not sure that Beane is assembling an Oline that has similar scheme ability; ie Morse’s strengths don’t jive with Ford, etc. There’s no actual Oline identity, especially in the run game which is a huge problem.

I’m wondering how much of that inconsistency in due to Covid and how much is poor communication. Line calls generally come from the inside out, and with shoddy guard play tackles often find themselves on an island or picking up a rusher to their inside.

Keep in mind that Dawkins extension is also $7-8 million a year less than what the best LTs are getting. Dawkins hasn’t been as good this year, but if it’s Covid related he should rebound next season. The bigger issue is that the lack of talent at guard which Beane hasn’t done anything to correct. Of course there are likely some other underlying issues as well that involve Oline coaching, run play design, etc.

I think the guard market is going to get bumped in the next two years. First by Scherff who’s a FA this year. Then Nelson and Elgton Jenkins who are both in line for new contracts. Jenkins is a but if an oddity though as he can also play tackle and center at a probowl level. The trend to mobile QBs will likely play a role in this as well as they’re more capable of big plays avoiding edge pressure than pressure up the middle.

I’d add guard to that list. The top guards are going to be pushing $20MM/y now.

This pretty much echoes my view on the matter. As much as OBJ’s a malcontent right now many former teammates have stated he’s one of the hardest workers in the locker room. Beane will place a call to his agent and do a heat check. We should also keep in mind that Sanders’ contract is up at the end of the season, so being able to choose between him and OBJ next year might be appealing to Beane…. Plus…. There is comp pick potential with big name WRs if they can ball out a bit down the stretch.

Without Knox this is definitely a spread offense. I actually wish we had another TE that was a Lee Smith level blocker. That would make it impossible for DCs to just game plan on a spread without the possibility of getting slammed by a 22 formation and a QB sweep.

The Rams depth issue showed up last year in the playoffs when they got sent home in GB…. Not that replacing Donald is really an easy proposition, but having multiple guys on the D line to cover for one going down helps. The same issue could pop up again with a Ramsey or Donald injury even though the Miller trade will insure they have two pass rushers.
