No, but I think it's what this guy drives. -
That article actually seemed pretty fair to the Sabres. The two teams are similar in many ways, but Carolina has the better power play, better health (we're missing Connolly and Kalinin), and home field advantage. If I was an unbiased hockey observer, I'd pick Carolina as well. But I'm not, and so I pick the Sabres in 6!!!!!!!!!!

Hey now, that "little helmet" was once the biggest in pro football . -
Agreed. Count me in as one of the Flutie "fanatics," though I never saw him as some sort of heir apparent to Jim Kelly - more like a Dave Krieg type that could keep the Bills respectable and competitive until the OL was rebuilt and a real QB brought in (still waiting on both of these...). The Flutie detractors are just angry because their hero, RJ, embarrassed their reputations here on football matters by proving to be a giant, pathetic bust. Flutie set this franchise's development back? Give me a break. Flutie generated new fans at a time when the Bills' future in Buffalo was tenuous. RJ is the QB who set this franchise back several years. And the attacks on Flutie's character make his haters even more pathetic. For one thing, the complaints of him being a "locker-room cancer" are pretty much just rumors or anecdotal bullstevestrojan. I've noticed that some of the very same Flutie haters on this board also scoff at Vikings' RB Mewelde Moore's comments about JP. But assuming that Flutie is every bit of the things his critics say - arrogant, selfish, ultra-competitive - over half of the NFL has guys like him. We just don't hear about them as much because the QB is usually the most vocal player to the media. Again, to highlight some of TSW's hypocritical nature, some of the Flutie haters can now be seen defending similar Bills divas like McGahee and Moulds. Last but not least are the tired, sophomoric, and very unfunny height jokes. The Flutie haters can't resist 'em. They'll sometimes even explain Flutie's character by drudging up the "Napoleon Complex" psychobabble, without providing an explanation for a tall man with similar character traits . Short jokes are TSW's male equivalence to their fat women jokes, and are rooted in the supreme, "Flutie-like" arrogance of the vast TSW fanbase - comprised mostly of socially awkward teenagers and cynical yuppie burnouts. End of rant. See ya.

KH delivers his 2006 roster predictions.
Typical TBD Guy replied to Typical TBD Guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, I anticipate a lot of people having a problem with that one. Maybe it's a bold prediction, but then again maybe it's not. Neither Holcomb nor JP impressed me last year. Holcomb straight up doesn't have the arm strength to properly utilize the speed of Evans, Davis, Parrish, and Price (if he makes the roster). And while I haven't yet given up on JP, I believe Levauron when they say that the best man in preseason wins the job. And I think Nall has enough confidence and veteran experience to overcome JP for at least the preseason. -

A comparison of NFL O-Lines
Typical TBD Guy replied to C.Biscuit97's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To quote some wise TBD'er, "it's not rocket surgery" : 1. The QB: you need to have a mentally sound QB, in terms of field vision, pressure awareness, and the like....a guy who knows when to get rid of the ball and where to move within the pocket in order to buy more time...because no matter how good your OL is, it WILL eventually break down...since Kelly left, we have not had such a QB (Clodd Tollins, Robbery J, Duh Bledslow, and now Mr. "I scored a 14 on the Wonderlic because I had to pee" Losman). 2. Raw talent: generally speaking, the earlier you draft OL the better the talent (see Bill from NYC's above post). Also, the more often you draft OL the more likely you are to find talent. Simple stojan, right? Well, take a glance back at past Buffalo drafts and you'll find that since the days of Butler, we have not come even close to comprehending this simple theory (I posted a much more detailed analysis on Buffalo's OL draft history many months ago). 3. Coaching turnover: not only regarding the change in coaches, but the change in offensive systems as well. Here's where Buffalo's offense has really fallen apart since the Super Bowl days (and where Ralph Wilson certainly deserves a share of the blame for the OL's failures). In the TD-era alone, we were a West Coast offense followed by a run n' shoot-style Gilbride offense followed by a bull sh--/gadget Coach Meathead offense in the relatively short span of 5 seasons. Kinda hard for your linemen to master their blocking assignments when you have such coaching and playbook instability, eh? 4. Player turnover: when you've found a group of players that work well together, you stick with them. This particular theory hasn't been tested much in Buffalo since guys like Wolford left, because - quite frankly - we haven't found much of anything that HAS worked . But as a good rule of thumb, the longer two or more quality linemen play next to each other, the more effective they can become. So when you find quality linemen, you keep them (and keep them healthy). Sometimes you may even want to (gasp!) overpay to keep them. I hope Marv, for example, will enable The Jason Peters Project to remain at RT in Buffalo for a long time. 5. Not related, but important nevertheless: GO SABRES!!!!!! -
The safety position has been gaining in importance over the past decade. Drafting one in the top 10 and paying one big money isn't foolish anymore. Roy Williams, Ed Reed, Polamalu...all these guys are game-changers. If teams and pundits knew then what they know now about Reed and Polamalu, both would have been top 10 picks - no questions asked, no complaints. Oh, and just curious, what was Clayton's opinion of the Raiders drafting Huff?
-
Not a bad idea. We need a 4th pass-rushing DE, and I don't think any of Neill, Powell ,Word, Rice, and Hall have NFL talent. Plus, it would make room for Crowell to start, who did a pretty decent job last season.
-
Just look at the Sabres. If they can come out of nowhere like this, who knows? Uh, but then again, that may require your "abstract day" to be one when only DB's and 150 lb flankers are needed to win the game.
-
Wow, this is pretty interesting.....
Typical TBD Guy replied to Lv-Bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you look at Reed's career stats, he was very close to having 1k yd seasons for many consecutive years. If he was playing in his prime in today's NFL (where every WR's stats seem to be inflated), he'd have easily been making the 1k mark on a regular basis. Moulds would have done it if it weren't for injuries and bad QB's. Evans is a GREAT candidate now to end this streak. His YPC are unreal, and this will only be his 3rd year! -
Actually, most teams only keep 9 linemen. 5 starters, 4 reserves, with 2 of the reserves being active for games and 2 inactive. I won't do the whole roster, but here's my opinion on the OL: Starters: LT: Gandy LG: Reyes C: Fowler RG: Villarial RT: Peters backup G/C: Preston, Geisinger backup LT: McFarland backup RT: Butler practice squad: Merz, Pennington cuts: Gibson, Anderson, Thomas, Morgan, Jerman
-
Way back before the Super Bowl years, Ralph WAS cheap. So the reputation in the eyes of some remains, fairly or not.
-
As of now, this is our best starting offensive line. I have severe doubts that Aaron Gibson will make the roster, and guys like Preston, Geisinger, McFarland, Bennie ( ), Jerman, and the 2 new guys are - in this stage of their careers - backups at best. Your thoughts? Here's mine: begins with a D and ends with a D, with two O's sandwiched in between and a ME added in to reflect that this is my own opinion . But having said that, I knew Marv was left with too many roster holes and kind of figured that this year they'd focus on D. Hopefully the plan next year will be to land some day 1 OL talent plus a free agent star or 2. If not, time to rally the mob, fire up the burning tires, sharpen those pitchfork ends, and google Marv's home address...

Round 4 (#105) Selection: S Ko Simpson
Typical TBD Guy replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hate to be an equal bearer of bad news, but the defense wasn't all that good either last year. Stop looking at this offseason as a quick fix. More likely, this is part 1 of a 2-part rebuilding project. And it was simply the D's turn to get some young talent. Look at who we drafted on D in the past 2 years: 2004: Tim Anderson 2005: Eric King That's all . Plus, remember that we haven't drafted a defensive player in the first round since 2001. And since that year, this is all we've drafted on D in the first 2 rounds: 2002: Ryan Denney 2003: Chris Kelsay Now contrast that with the O: 2002: Labia Williams 2002: Josh Reed 2003: Willis McGahee 2004: Lee Evans 2004: JP Losman 2005: Roscoe Parrish I'm with you that the offense isn't good, and that it needs to be addressed. But I anticipate next offseason as being the time to do so. And in all honesty, some improvements have already been made. But I think that way because I happen to like Andre Davis, Fowler, and Reyes (at LG). I guess we'll see how that plays out in the preseason. -
If we still had DonaHO....
Typical TBD Guy replied to ndirish1978's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Count me in as among the people who think TD screwed up practically everything. I refuse to give TD credit for keeping the team under the salary cap and consistently selling out RWS. Any monkey with an abbacus could add up contracts and make sure that we don't go over a limit. By now, almost every team understands the nuances of the cap. As far as generating fan interest, provide the region with a winning team and consider this problem solved. Eventually, the well of draft day gimmicks and Snyder-esque free agent moves run dry. There reaches a point where the fans expect results if the team wants more of their money. Judging by the sign confiscations in the waning home games of last season, that point was TD's 5-year mark. An NFL GM's primary task - by far - is to develop a winning football team, so my apologies if I choose to focus too heavily on this aspect of TD's job description . He inherited a team in the rebuilding process, and 5 full years later we're still in the rebuilding process. How can that be interpreted as anything but an unmitigated disaster? The core of the team that Marv now inherits is minimal: Moorman Losman McGahee Evans Peters Schobel Spikes Fletcher Clements McGee I'm defining "core" here as players with current or potential ability that cannot normally be replaced with mid-round draft picks or free agent castoffs. That's 10 guys over 5 years . But Losman and Peters could still become busts, McGahee and Clements are money-grubbing ego cases who may force their way out of here by next offseason, and Spikes may be damaged goods from that !@#$ing Achilles accident. Under this worst-case scenario, one can filter this list down to 5 guys in 5 years . And you TD Apologists don't want to talk disaster? Damn, your cup is always half-full. If the TD Era wasn't all that bad, the 70's must have been the Golden Years of Bills football. And the 90's must have been like a decade-long hit of Ecstacy. Not for me, man. The TD Era brought me nothing but let-downs. One can only watch a group of talented pussies for so long, constantly folding under the pressure vs. winning teams, before one must scream, "enough!" We've become the Patriots' bitches and the Arizona Cardinals' equals, and this all happened under Teflon's watch. -
There's nothing mystical about what they look for: 1. very thin 2. tall 3. defined cheekbones 4. good facial symmetry How often do you see a short, plump, round-faced, big-nosed supermodel? Most men really only care about #4 to a certain extent. Me personally, I also like the #1 look, but find #2 and #3 turnoffs - makes women too masculine looking....JMO.

Yet another mock draft to feast your eyes on
Typical TBD Guy replied to C.Biscuit97's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bunkley would be a terrible pick. I don't think he was a safe bet to make the first round - let alone top 10 - before his workouts. Plus, he has an alarming injury history. Oh yeah, and he was caught for shoplifting a couple years ago . Broderick Flowers? Nah-ah. No way. -
Bills tidbit in today's ESPN Insider
Typical TBD Guy replied to Lurker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Too funny . Gotta love these guys! I think Marv's top 8 draft board is similar to this: 1. Bush 2. Fergy 3. Hawk 4. Super Mario 5. Leinart 6. Huff 7. Ngata 8. Davis As you can see, I don't believe Bunkley even makes Marv's top 8 board. But Young (who I suspect isn't on Marv's board either) and Davis are expected to be picked ahead of the Bills, leaving Huff and Ngata at #8. So in my best estimates, Huff is our man. Huff makes sense, too. Has all the skills to be a Pro Bowl free safety, smart guy, great leader, GREAT production throughout college, VERY fast which is important to our cover 2, ballhawk, can play emergency CB, no injury or character baggage, and this could be a subtle but key point - plays the same position our coach played in the NFL. His only conceivable negatives: went to the same college as Vagina Williams, and does not play OL or DL. But then again, looking back, we would have been better off if we picked Roy Williams over Vagina. Let's not make a similar mistake! -
If we still had DonaHO....
Typical TBD Guy replied to ndirish1978's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's amazing to me how some can still look back and reminisce about the TD Era. The Son of Satan truly had this message board fan base under his spell... Yes, TD may have been an excellent micromanager who could have squeezed that Moulds 5th for a 4th or even 3rd out of Texas, but on the macro level he would have squandered that pick on a talented skill player with zero character and who is afraid of the Buffalo cold weather. History will judge TD harshly, probably a notch below Stew Barber. We were the fourth worst NFL franchise during the past 5 seasons, despite playing in the salary cap era at a time when Ralph was more than willing to spend money on players. A big reason for this failure to win is because TD never had a coherent, consistent vision for success beyond the simple goal of "winning." One year we were a West Coast offense with a 46-Defense, in another we were a Power Running offense with a Zone Blitz D... I don't know how history will judge Marv Levy as a GM, but so far at least he's consistently stuck to his guns about the type of players he wants: young, speedy, hard-working, high-character, guys with a major chip on their shoulder. -
Ah yes, Williams the worst #4 in a decade.
Typical TBD Guy replied to Dibs's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
McKinnie was the right pick for the Bills. He may not be living up to his lofty pre-draft hype in Minnesota, but at least he's still starting at LEFT TACKLE there and playing pretty consistently if not quite Pro Bowl-level. Drafting an overweight right tackle and expecting him to make a smooth transition to the left side was a microcosm of TD's draft-day arrogance. A lot of Bills fans at the time would have preferred McKinnie or Roy Williams...turns out they were right.
