    Kaiir Elam.

One of Ja'Marcus Ingram, Ta'Cory Couch, or Keni-H Lovely (how are these real names?) could outplay him.

Or, more likely, a cut from another team takes his roster spot.

I'm hoping this doesn't happen. Elam showing he was worth his 1st round price tag would be HUGE for this team. Absolutely enormous. But you said "surprise cut", so...

For every 100 or more guys this regime has appropriately parted ways with there will always be Wyatt Teller. I fear cutting Elam could be the next version of Teller.  He flashes talent at times.  Hopefully last year was more about the foot injury and he can really push Benford for the starting job.

That would certainly be a big surprise. Cutting Edwards would be terrible in any situation-  3M guaranteed. If he wasn’t part of our plan, Beane would likely get a draft pick.

Yeah I guess I equate those two(cut/trade) in a question like this. You are correct he could probably get a 7th for him or a capable backup RB in the very very rare player for player trade.

I'm old but not old enough to remember him playing.  But when I was a Browns fan, I read up on Browns history.

With Otto Graham as their on-field captain, the Browns dominated the old All-American Football Conference (AAFC) in the late 1940s and won the championship all four years of the AAFC's tenure.  Cleveland's run included the 1948 championship game when the Browns destroyed an earlier version of the Buffalo Bills by a score of 49-7.

Their critics complained that the Browns were the best team in an inferior league and would crumble against NFL competition.

Well, about that... the Browns joined the NFL in 1950, won the championship that year, and Graham was named the league's MVP.   The Browns earned the right to play in the NFL Championship game 6 consecutive years after joining the NFL, winning 3 of them.

They've had a bit of success in the 1960's with Jim Brown, in the 70's with the Kardiac Kids, in the 80's with Bernie... but have mostly been irrelevant since Otto's days.

    Irrelevant is an interesting term.

Jim Brown is on the very short list of best player of all time.

Ozzie Newsome is on the list of best TEs of all time. Probably still top 5 in talent. He would be a superstar in this era.

Can't tell the story of the NFL in the 80's without The Drive and The Fumble.

Relevant yes. Winning not so much.

  4. Remember this would be a surprise..

    David Edwards

If Van Pran proves capable to play center, them McGovern stays at LG. I like Anderson to be the backup inside as he can also play Center. Collins is the utility knife that can play extra OT in heavy sets and can back up both OT and OG spots.

Agree re Bass and Miller. Probably won't but neither would be a total shock to me.

Disagree on Gilliam. They will keep Morris anyway. And Gilliam is three players in one. From a special teams perspective it isn't one or the other in Gilliam or Hollins. They play totally separate positions.

You are likely correct. Every year I want to get rid of Gilliam and it doesn't happen. He did force a fumble on kick off last year.

I'd still favor not keeping a FB and using that roster spot on an extra OL or LB.

Mine has to be Joe Namath. Drafted by the Jets and signed for $400K an unheard of amount at the time. Articles in national magazines about his fur coats, shag rugs and his notorious partying. But what really did it was his a beating the Colts in Superbowl III when no one gave the Jets a chance at winning thus lifting the AFL to equals of the NFL

Can't write a history of the NFL without mentioning that game and Namath in particular. He played well with no turnovers and 17 of 28 passing. He was named MVP and is the only Superbowl MVP to not score or throw a TD.

But it was the NY Jets defense picking off Earl Morrall three times that won the game

  7. I think the two biggest surprises that could happen are Bass and Miller. I don't think either will be cut but I would not be shocked either if they were.

I am pretty much assuming Milano will be on PUP to start the season

Cuts that should happen but won't are one of the following Gilliam and Hollins. I'd cut Gilliam and give Hollins a good look at WR#6. If you get rid of Gilliam you keep Morris as TE#3 and you can carry an extra OL like Collins for jumbo sets.

I would add that Diggs while continuing to insist on targets was under performing in the playoffs annually, (9 playoff games with 2 tds), and had noticeably underperformed the last half of his last season in Buffalo, Diggs was generally great during the regular season, not so much in the playoffs,

    Can't argue the stats.

Diggs was one of my favorites.

That said we don't know the gameplan nor how the defense played him. You think Davis gets 4 TD receptions against KC if they were designing a defense to take him away. Belichick took away Reed in SuperBowl XXV.  I think any defense can take away a #1 WR if they want. Hell even McD can control Hill when he wants.

Elite TE not the same story. Kincaid and Knox can be unstoppable this year if Brady lets them.

  9. His INTs will be down from 18 to 13

His INT rate will be a far more respectable 2.25%

His YPA will fall to below 7 while his comp % increaes to a career high 70% with a greater emphasis on short easy throws.

He will still struggle with deep fly pattern accuracy. He's just never been that great throwing a deep ball with arc. At this point I don't see it ever getting better. Just have to live with some missed deep throws from time to time. Good thing is he usually misses too far and avoids INTs on these throws.

Id be stunned if Miller leads the team on sacks. Honestly stunned. I still don't think it completely put of the question that he realises he can't go in camp and retires before the season. That is how little faith I have in his remaining ability to play.

I get where you are coming from. But he was playing at a high level prior to the ACL. It's a longer recovery for older players but he has had another 6 months to rehab and no brace now.

I have little faith in anyone else on the roster getting to 10 sacks so I'm still sticking with my prediction Miller leads the team in sacks.

He can’t be allowed to blow games anymore. He’s just a kicker who has a crisis of confidence. It’s incumbent on Beane to get competition for training camp with the idea of getting rid of him. You assemble a roster with guys bleeding internally to get a roster spot and this critical position has a guy that ended our season, missing a chip shot. He was undependable during the season and sucked in the playoffs. Get a kicker from Canada, the UFL or a great college kicker. Start again with a young guy who doesn’t have the baggage of disappointing his team.

Beane is in a tight spot with this one. That contract will be difficult to eat.

Bills played several tight games last year and you have to figure with all the new offensive pieces they will take time to gel. That means a few more FG attempts and maybe less going for it on fourth down in the red zone

Bills can't take all year to see if Bass figures it out. I'm not sure they can even survive September if he is struggling.

It's easily Von for me. I hope I am wrong because I think he is done. My expectations for his season are so low. If the over/under on sacks from him was 4.5 I'd still take the under.

I hope I'm wrong on Taylor Rapp and Keon Coleman to lesser extents too. But the potential differential benefit of being wrong on Von is greater.

You could be right but my guess is in the end Miller will lead the team in sacks. Now he could do that still with only 5 sacks which would be sad. I think he starts fast but age kicks in and he wears down by season end just like Floyd did. He probably gets to 10 sacks if he can get a couple late in the year and the Bills are still playing meaningful games in December.

  13. Allen with Reid would be far better than Mahommes with McDermott.  My guess Allen with Reid turns the ball over less, runs less, but still scores at the same rate as he always has.

Herbert with Harbaugh will be in this conversation by year end though

They don’t. What they are is a more important stat for quarterbacks. It’s the quarterback’s job to pass the ball not run the ball. Be a field general and distribute the ball. It’s probably why qb’s get paid the most money. To pass not run.

It's the QBs job to not throw INTs. Score by run or pass makes no difference.  YPA and int% are the two most critical stats for a QB.

Taylor Rapp, I see him as a maddening liability and a flag waiting to happen, wanted him to go elsewhere.

Agree. Really hoping he is a backup

Bishop should start or they wasted a second round pick when there were bigger needs at WR and DL

Last year I would have said Gabe Davis. This year, I hope I'm wrong about Spencer Brown. He's had some good stretches here and there, but on balance he's been a liability (or injured) since he arrived. The pessimist in me says he'll play well, sign a big extension, get injured, and be the same uneven player when he gets back. I really want to be wrong.

    I miss House Ballard.

Brown was very good last year. Kudos to Beane for sticking with him. I think he's going to have a solid year and I hope they can extend him at a reasonable cost. If not they will need to let him walk.  If they can extend him and Dawkins still is playing at a high level that means they can draft edge x 2 next year with two of their first 3 picks.

    Dawson Knox.

There was a question before last season: which player will have a breakout season in 2023?

    I said Knox.

    I was wrong.

That contract has turned into a liability.

One of my favorite players on the team.  Even I lost faith in him after the drop that could have sealed the Giants game.   He did have a wrist injury but was not much of a factor after coming back. Really hope he comes back strong with a 40-50 catch season.

One player I hope all the rest of you are wrong about is Tyler Bass. I still think he will get back to form, but it sure feels like a lot of folks here have already given up on him.

Good choice.  He made some big kicks. I went back and watched the NY Giants game. He had two chances from ling range to put the game away and missed wide right both times.  A bit of foreshadowing.  He has the leg. Hope he starts to be more consistent.

  18. For me I'm going to go with A.J. Epenesa.

I've been down on him since he was drafted. Last year however he finally seemed to have the body size you want in a modern 4-3 DE. He made more plays last year than he did the first 3 combined.

If he can go from 4-6 sacks to 8-10 that would go a long way to taking pressure off Miller and Rousseau.

Coleman: I hate to say it but the expectations on him are going to be huge.  It's not really his fault, it's just the situation he's been thrust into.  If he doesn't flash brightly at camp, the sky is going to start falling.

Center: This is quietly a big worry of mine. Interior pressure is the best way to throw Allen (and almost any QB) off his game. If we don't have a rock solid center from day 1 it could really mess things up offensively.

I somewhat understand where you are coming from listing center.

My counter to that concern, is that Morse was never more than solidly above average. He was never great. He was never really bad either. I think you can easily replace above average with McGovern, Anderson, or the Georgia kid.

As for o-line I think Torrence is going to be a star, but many players have sophomore slumps. Just hope it is not him.

McDermott wins one sooner than LaFleur does.

Wake me up when McDermott loses to a replacement level QB like Jimmy G in the playoffs

He was losing to the 3rd string Dolphins QB at home in the third quarter. The defense blew a 17-0 lead and gave up 24 pts to a decimated Dolphins offense. A Josh fumble accounted for the other 7 points allowed.

Glass half full his defense held them to multiple FGs on short fields and got two INTs.  One by in the dog-house Elam. Glass half empty his defense gave up 5 scoring drives and let a terrible QB almost win that game.
