Look at what you're saying here - it was a big win for the D that they held KC to a chip shot FG AFTER the Bills had tied the game in the 4th quarter. I'll tell you what a "win" for the D would have been, force a KC punt to give the Bills the ball back with the score tied. That you would even consider holding the Chiefs to a FG instead of a TD a "win" is just proof of how low you have set the bar for the Bills D. And as far as Allen's big moment, well there is nothing Allen can do if those around him don't also rise to the occasion: * First off, the coaches decided not to have the Bills most dangerous offensive skill player (not named Allen) on the field for that last drive. * Second, the Bills dropped the pass that would have converted the 1st down and likely seen Allen lead the Bills to a remarkable last possession win. So if the one person who has stepped up on offense is not on the field and a TE can't make a 4th down catch that most NFL receivers make is Allen's fault then we'll just have to agree to disagree here.

Allen has shown the ability to get better each and every year he's been in the NFL. This season his remarkable reduction in TO's was the reason the Bills exceeded expectations. In the last 2 playoff losses to the Chiefs the Bills had the ball inside 3 minutes trailing the Chiefs by a FG. Last season the Bills missed a relatively easy FG and this season they dropped a pass that would have converted a 4th down. Sorry but this is not saying "it's everything else" it's pointing out the simple fact that outside of Allen no one appears to step up in these close playoff losses. Sure, Allen can play even better but is that a reasonable expectation? In the last two playoff losses to the Chiefs the failure of anyone else to really step up has cost the Bills those games. Clearly the #1 factor has been the poor play of the defense in both games. The #2 factor IMO has been the failure of the coaches and other players not named Allen to step up and make an outsized impact.

That is NOT a critical error by a QB. Critical errors resulting from what you describe as Allen's shortcomings on that play would have been: * Taking a sack * Throwing an INT * Throwing to a receiver well behind the line to gain. * Throwing a pass that was not catchable. Instead Allen threw a very catchable pass beyond the line to gain. Calling that a "critical Allen mistake" is ridiculous on its face. Allen was bad on his first drive. On his second drive he was solid leading the Bills to a FG. He was outstanding on that last drive before of the half to make it a one score game. But in no reasonable way could you call Allen's first drive "devastatingly awful". That is pure hyperbole. Nothing devastating happened on that first drive. You know like a pick 6 or lost fumble in the Bills Red Zone. The O went three and out and then punted the Chiefs to their own 10 yard line. Hardly a devastating outcome.

I disagree: * They may game plan against what the Bills do on offense with a shifty, fast RB like Cook but they do not game plan against Cook the player in the way they do against CMC, Barcley & Henry. * Prime Diggs was borderline elite in 2020 & 2021. Not so much the last 3 seasons. * A "safety combo" by definition is NOT an elite player. Sure Hyde/Poyner were a strength of the Bills D and opponents had to take the pair into consideration when gamer planning. But, neither was the type of elite player that could routinely change the course of a game.
-
How was it a critical QB error when he made the throw to the guy who was open for the 1st down?
-
It wasn't a critical error. He didn't recognize Spags sneaky blitz but was still able to get the pass off and put it on the hands of his TE at the KC 35.
-
Yep and it's a hard pill to swallow. Allen stands alone as a game changer that opponents prioritize their game plan against. Dawkins is close. Teams probably move their best pass rusher around to avoid him. Cook is a very good RB but he's not elite. Do you think any team has their primary defensive game plan aimed at him in the way teams focus on CMC, King Henry & Barclay? The answer is no. The Bills have a lot of good & very good players. And the young ones could move into the elite ranks over the next couple of years. But at their core the Bills are a one man show. Think about KC. When you play the Chiefs you must stop Mahomes, Kelsey and Jones. The difference between having three elite players on the team versus one is more then the 3 points we typically lose to KC by. That's a testimony to just how good Allen is and how much of an opponents game plane he takes up. Bass was very impressive from 50+ yards. If he keeps that up and has is consistent with his extra points and under 50 yard FG's he has a real chance to move into the elite ranks of kickers.
-
Why? He played a very good game and was not the reason the Bills lost. In fact Allen's play likely kept the Bills in the game and in position for a walk off win. Any other QB and the Bills probably lose that game by 2 scores. The need for some posters to criticize Allen whenever he doesn't play a perfect game is insane and I'm suspicious of their motivation. The Bills Super Bowl window is open only as long as Allen continues to play at the level he's playing. If over the next 5 years Allen doesn't get any better he will not be the reason the Bills don't win a Super Bowl. The NFL is not the NBA where an elite generational talent can will his team to a championship. Football is the ultimate team game involving dozens of players. If only one of those players is consistently great in the playoffs, and I would argue that only Allen has met this criteria, the Bills will not a win a championship. The fact that the Bill's have gotten as far as they have is amazing and probably the limit of where a single player can take them.
-
And Mahomes had a bad fumble likely costing the Chiefs a TD so what's your point? NO player is perfect for an entire game. When any reasonable person looks at this last Bills/Chiefs game Allen's play is way down the list of things that needed to be better in order for the Bills to win.
-
This is full on passive aggressive nonsense - first you praise Allen then throw him under the bus with a ridiculous attack. So I have to ask you - are you really a Bills fan or just a troll here to stir up trouble? I just can't believe any Bills fan would post the above as it displays a total ignorance about Allen & the Bills. Hell, it displays a total ignorance about football in general and quarterbacking in particular. I think even a casual look at Johnson and Allen's playoff stats would disprove your point convincingly. It doesn't "border on deranged" it is DERANGED.
-
Allen has been one of the few if not ONLY Buffalo Bill who has proven to be reliable and perform at an elevated level in the playoffs. If those around Allen, both coaches & players, had been as reliably great during the playoffs as Allen has then the Bills would have a minimum of 2 Super Bowl championships and likely be heading for their 3rd. I won't criticize Allen until I see other players/coaches on this team rising to the occasion in the playoffs to the same degree and with the same consistency as Allen has. Period, end of discussion.

There's no reason for me to think that those Bills AFL championship teams could have beat the NFL champion Packers or Browns. The fact is that in the 1st SB season, which was the Bills 3rd straight AFL championship appearance, the Chiefs who beat the Bills 31 - 7 IN BUFFALO lost to the Packers 35 - 10. Now I know football game results are not necessarily transitive but that result makes it hard to believe those Bills teams were on the same level as the NFL champs.
-
I am old enough and while I was a kid in the mid 60's so my memory is a bit hazy I vividly remember when the AFL reached parity with the NFL at the top and that wasn't until 1968. The Bills had a great AFL team in those days but it was inferior to the best NFL teams. My comp would be in soccer the MLS compared to the British Premier league. Winning an MLS title is a big deal and the top MLS players are very good but they are not close to being as good as the Premier league. And as others have said, IMO Lamonca was the better QB on the Bills at that time which he showed in later years at Oakland.

Lost in the sauce: Outstanding Performances vs KC
CincyBillsFan replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall
Extending Cook should be Bean's #1 off season priority. -
Professional football lost something primal with the merger. The hatred between the two leagues was real and had me as a Bills fan rooting big time for the Jets & Chiefs in the 1968 & 1969 Super Bowl games. But I also realized in hindsight that it wasn't until the late 60's that the best AFL teams were a match for the best NFL teams. Those Kemp championship Bills teams would have been at best middle of the road NFL teams in 1964 & 1965. For full disclosure, I was a Lamonica fan over Kemp.
-
No. Kemp is an all time legacy Bills player. But the AFL in 1964 & 1965 was the minor leagues compared to the NFL. When the AFL started getting better and approaching the NFL in quality Kemp and the Bills fell off the face of the planet. The Chiefs beat the Bils 31 - 7 in the 1966 season champiosnhip game (in Buffalo) before being squashed by the Packers 35 - 10 in the 1st Super Bowl. Allen's 5 straight division titles is a far greater accomplishment then Kemp's back to back AFL championships. And let's not even talk about Kelly's 4 straight Super Bowl appearances. Those early year AFL championships were pinky rings.

Fan boy! Strip away your passive BS Here's what you accused, yes accused, Allen of: * Firing Dorsey, drafting Keon… all those things don’t happen without Allen’s OK (and perhaps even his pushing). So Allen fired Dorsey, got it. * He’s very loyal but maybe also a little comfortable in that role, and in his day-to-day. There is a fine line between being loyal and comfortable though… it is a potential path into Rodgers or Peyton territory. From the Bills end, I do absolutely get it, he is the franchise. You need to do whatever it takes to keep him happy, particularly while he’s still this good. So Allen is a diva who is to comfortable, got it. * Diggs was not unhappy because he wasn’t getting the ball… he was unhappy because he wanted to win, and he disagreed that having the QB ‘run’ the organization was the best way to win. I just don’t think he liked where this was going. but Diggs had a fundamental problem with how the Bills operated, and he wasn’t going to get through to Allen on what he thought the Bills should do, so he was out. So Allen runs the Bills and doesn't want to win as much as Diggs did, got it. I’m not saying Allen runs the defense or makes all the signings or anything like that. Yea because saying "Allen runs the defense and makes all the signings" is bat feces crazy. I’m just saying he’s extremely powerful now in the organization. Like, he’s the most powerful QB right now in any organization (more powerful than his closest peers: Mahomes, Burrow or Lamar). So Allen is the most powerful QB right now. More powerful then Mahomes, Burrow & Lamar. So why hasn't he surrounded himself with offensive studs? You do know that Burrows publicly argued for the Bengals to draft Chase in the 1st round. What that will mean in the long term I don’t know… But I'm sure you will tell us and it won't reflect well on Allen. it may keep them from ever winning a Super Bowl with him (in fact if they don’t I would argue it was the biggest reason why they didn’t, I would agree with Diggs). So you think Allen is keeping us from winning a Super Bowl. And if we don't win a Super Bowl the biggest reason will be Allen, got it. But right now, I do think it’s hard to argue against the Bills’ approach, because what choice do the Bills have? This approach hopefully keeps Allen from being disgruntled, and it keeps the head coach in a job. What the hell? I don’t think Allen is outwardly power-hungry or anything like that, so you think Allen is only inwardly power hungry? in fact, I don’t think this necessarily comes from a bad place beyond him not wanting to disrupt a life he currently enjoys. He wants to be the consummate leader, and often will shoulder too much of the load. In fact, my gut is he was satisfied with the defensive performance against Kansas City, and feels like he probably should have scored at the end of the game to win the game (I wouldn’t agree with him… the defense was bad). My hope is given that McDermott has been able to swallow his pride to this degree at this point, he may even be willing to significantly alter his defensive philosophy and priorities in player acquisition to better suit what the team needs when they play top level competition in the playoffs. I think that’s the Bills’ best chance going forward. This last paragraph is pure creative writing trolling. No Bills can could write it, or read it, with a straight face
-
Rather then Allen running the Bills organization and telling Bean who to draft in the 1st & 2nd rounds his Coleman comment sounds like someone trying to make the new guy feel good about joining the Bills. Especially as there was some negative stuff being said about the Coleman pick. Past, Present and Future drafts have ALL been about the scouting department and not about Allen running the draft.
-
I've seen some pretty wild anti-Allen takes on 2BD but this one is the weirdest and wildest one yet. What proof do you have for any of the stuff you just vomited out here? This is a fake psycho babble analysis of Allen that defies basic logic and common sense. This rambling rant could be used as the poster child for a passive aggressive attack on another person. This best sums up this post: "what you've just wrote is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul"
-
IF he's right? Do you actually believe a word in that passive aggressive hit piece on Allen? The jury is still out on both Coleman & Kincaid. A lot of very knowledgeable football folks thought both picks were great.
-
Remember the NE/Bills playoff game a couple of years ago? Allen would do the same to the current Bills D.
