I hear ya, but when I look through plays on the film review threads Daboll is getting guys open (at least now with the younger infusion of WR talent) IMO they are primarily missing on those offensive shots for 3-4 reasons - 1. The o-line cannot hold up in pass-pro (particularly from center to RT) to allow our QB's to get through their progressions, 2. Josh is still learning where to go with the ball based on the look the defense is giving him, and is probably a bit slow going through his progressions, 3. Josh trusts his legs more than his pocket and will just tuck and run if he sees a soft edge when he may have a better downfield option, 4. The afore mentioned side of the o-line also struggles getting any push and opening holes in the run game. A lot of good things could happen if the fix the line. Josh hits more passes, defenses are less inclined to play man and load the box, we get more push and more success running the ball. Basically, they will put more points on the board. I am trying to understand how changing an OC fixes the above when I think there is more evidence of rookie QB's being ruined because they are forced to adapt to a revolving door of OC's and changing playbooks.

Taron Johnson playing very good ball.

Yep. Tore mine wrestling my son. Two state heavy weight championships under his belt yet the old man still thought he could take him. He went with me to the ortho surgeon and when he told the doctor he was pinning me I interrupted and said, "trying - to pin me". Plenty of rehab, and still hurts some days.. We both knew he schooled me - sucks getting older. -

Makes sense if it is a labrum tear - will need some time to heal. He's young, he'll be fine. If that happened to me, I would be in rehab for a few years:) -

I saw him shed a block on a Fournette run but the angle he had to take required that he lead with that right shoulder and he shied away from making the tackle. Fournette is a load to take down and I was wondering if his previous shoulder injury was an issue because in another series he slipped the block and was able to square up and there was less hesitation. Kid is tough as nails, but I wish we had the depth to let him heal. Hopefully he can make a full recovery in the offseason - I wonder how he will look without the injury...thinking pretty awesome. -
Tre White is the Best Player On the Bills Now
WideNine replied to Domdab99's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sad, but I remember some years where I thought our punter was the best player. Live long enough you realize that the glass could always be half emptier -
He better take a good angle because in a foot race my money is on Josh.

Shotgun - zone read option, but always run to the left. That way Josh can limit his reads to one half of the field and only the competent left side of the line has to perform. Anyone who is a slow-blinker lines up on the right. And yes, I am just yanking everyone's chain. Having spent a few years with Bama, I think Daboll knows how to dumb-down offensive plays to the talent he has if needed, but the goal should be that the offense can execute what they need to execute as part of their game plan to move the chains and score, take advantage of defensive mismatches, alignment gaps, and soft spots in the zones. That being said I don't think he has overly complicated schemes - the Bills have found some gems with just FA castoffs or undrafted players but sometimes you just need better talent. I think you can find that jet sweep play we scored with in just about every high school playbook. Just bigger, faster, and more talented players executing it.

Thanks and much appreciated - I guess they are not going to tell every team how they attack a good running game, but was getting tired of hearing over and over about adjustments made at the half and not knowing what they were. I really should just give the NFL more money and get the game pass. I get annoyed with the way the NFL and NHL break all these things up into different packages, but I really like analyzing the games afterwards. Perhaps it was just me, but I thought McDermott seemed a bit annoyed (in his initial post-game press conf) that it took till half-time for Leslie to make the adjustments. Maybe reading too much into it, but I remember that he yanked duties from him earlier in the year.

Dunno how I feel about this...Colton was not great, but a known commodity. They signed Matt Darr who's gross stats are marginally better than Colton's, but he did not make the Dolphin squad and has been out of it for a while. You have to assume he has a bit more hang time and is a stop-gap measure till they get Bojorquez back. Not many games left and they may just be looking for a spark for ST.

I know I am killing the love fest, but just trying to keep it real. Milano is not very strong against the run, and that is not to take away from how many other plays and turnovers he does make. He is so effective at blitzing and getting to the QB as well as his coverage skills it is a hard decision to ever take him off the field. Feel free to look up his stats for the game (Milano 3 tackles) 1 after Fournette gained 7 yards, 1 where he pushed Hyde out of bounds, and a stop on Bortles for no gain when he tried to scramble. The fact that Poyer our safety led the team with 9 paints a picture of just how many runs were getting to the 2nd level. I don't think that suddenly Milano became a better run stopper in the second half and it is "OK" for a young player like him who is having plenty of success in other areas to have more to his game for coaches to work on. What I did see from the gamebook (besides all the ridiculous penalties I had tried to forget) was that the Bills had inserted Jordan Phillips a 6' 6" 340 lb DT on the line in the 2nd half who I usually only notice in goal line situations and he is in on a lot of stops. I should just buy game pass to see if the "adjustments" the Bills made were more than just personnel or if there was a package/alignment changes too because they did seem to help - I think. Jacksonville also inexplicably started going three and out calling pass after pass and to me it seemed Hackett hit the panic button a bit early and abandoned their running game after only a few stops...going all in on passing against this Bills "D" is not a good idea.

I think once you show up to a funeral home, demand the head of your father, try to fight with the employees, tell everyone there that you have guns and will use them - and then the cops arrive (small wonder) and find indeed someone thought it was a good idea to sell Richie a crap ton of guns and a silencer to boot... which they confiscate (where is the NRA when you need them to protect a crazy guy's rights?) well you have kind of left the Rubicon of insult-trading reprisal far behind. Just my opinion.

Milano has a nose for the ball, and is one heck of an athlete when asked to drop into coverage. The only struggles I have seen is when teams run right at him - his 6'0 223 lb frame does not exactly shed blockers. He plays a lot more like an extra safety on the field - if he can knife into the backfield and happens to hit the right gap he can trip or wrap up the legs of a RB. If being blocked it isn't even a contest, maybe why the Bills go with their 3 safeties, and 2 linebackers (Lorenzo and Edmunds) and Milano is not part of their goal line package. In most ways Milano is the perfect LB for a team that faces NE and the way they spread the ball around, but I can't say that he isn't a liability against a ground and pound run offense like the Jags were showing early with Fournette. Perhaps like Edmunds he just has to get more experience recognizing run early enough so he can hit the right gap unblocked...they're both young and still have room to grow.

Does Danny Crossman Survive This Year?
WideNine replied to Phil The Thrill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Colton is fairly reliable as a punter, but that other dude on IR Corey Bojorquez could boom them. Ray Ray was a liability on returns, and the unit was a disaster early in the year. It is tough to coach Special Teams as you get so much roster turn over year to year...not sure if I throw the baby out with the bath water as Crossman had a respectable unit last year. They have certainly been better since that Houston game, but the old article below kind of explains that struggle getting new guys to buy into playing ST. https://billswire.usatoday.com/2018/10/19/buffalo-bills-captains-call-players-meeting-special-teams-lorenzo-alexander-stephen-hauschka -
This. Big Ben did not have elite speed as a QB, it was just the fact that he could wade through guys trying to wrap him up and easily break through arm tackles. Like watching wolves try to take down a bull moose. That, and even with defenders hanging all over him, he could still deliver the ball. It is Josh's ability to break arm tackles and deliver the ball with guys on him that gives me flashbacks, but he has a long way to go still and if OBD can keep him upright it could actually be fun to watch a Bills QB again.

Jags Fire Hackett and Have Benched Bortles for Kessler
WideNine replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have not seen too many successful draw plays the past many years, and even less for 10 yards, but I read that there were short passes that went incomplete before they got into the 3rd and 10 situations. Also loads of speculation that Tannehill's shoulder is not 100%. I believe Gase did not trust his arm so he was hoping to catch the Colts D on an overaggressive pass rush with the draw and.... obviously not so much. You are right though, Gase has been under the microscope lately for his play calling not sure if I lay that last game at his feet - they needed a few stops from their defense to hold their lead and the defense crapped the bed. I do think that it was odd that he stopped running the ball when they were having success with that. He said it was because the Colts were sending run blitzes. My philosophy is you run the ball till the other team proves they can stop you regardless. -

WideNine replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I honestly think Gase is a decent HC, but Tannehill I have never thought of as a franchise-type QB. He has moments of solid to really good play, then will do some things that are drive killers...just inconsistent. He has also been injured quite a bit. If they got rid of Gase they would probably suck for another decade, but if that is what the fans want then Todd Bowles and Doug Marrone might be available soon. -

It's kind of funny, but losing to our Bills is treated like the ultimate NFL disgrace. When the Vikings lost to the Bills at first all the media was saying "the sky is falling, how could they lose to the lowly Bills?". Lucky for the Viking coaching staff and their top-dollar QB the narrative morphed to a more pragmatic narrative that the Vikings play at least one uncharacteristic game a year where they lose to a "bad" team. Then came the fallout from the Jets losing to us in spectacular fashion and all the "dead man walking" comments regarding Todd Bowles. Now the heads roll after the Jags lose to us - I wonder how many more front office shake-ups our "bad" team can cause over the rest of the season... -
I mostly agree with you that their play as a whole needs to be elevated, or simply an infusion of talent. What I like about Teller that I would like to see from the rest of the o-line is his tenacity to block all the way to the whistle - and then some:) Too many of our o-linemen are either whiffing completely on their blocks, or unable to hold them for more than a second and a half. I don't like to see o-linemen on their feet looking back at their QB under a pile of other jerseys.

Best Cornerback in the Game!
WideNine replied to Halloween Land's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Guess I am a bit old-school too Bob, I like players to be enthusiastic but worry about players that cannot get enough attention - usually goes too far. My hope is that White keeps it fun, but gains the maturity to know when to reign it in a bit before it hurts the team in a crucial situation. Also, I have always liked that kind of classy "act like you have been there before" attitude when you score or defend a pass. Kind of tells the world this isn't your first rodeo and "yes I will defend every pass thrown my way" nothing special to this no-fly zone. We have a lot of youth on this team, McDermott will certainly have his hands full trying to find the balance of enthusiasm and fun, but not letting it devolve into a circus of needy, attention-*****. -
Not sure why so many posters here seem to be downplaying Josh's arm, but you noted the exact thing I was thinking. Josh had no way to step up and no way to even use a full range of throwing motion on that pass as he was being mobbed and steamrolled by what seemed to be most of the Jag's d-line. I have no idea how he was able to get that pass off, not to mention on target and so far down the field. Having that kind of strength and accuracy behind basically a flick-of-the-wrist throw is a rare ability and I just hope they find a better way to protect this kid next year. Would be such a huge waste if they don't.

Kelvin played hard yesterday. Not sure if he will, but I hope when he (eventually) leaves this team he comes away understanding a bit more about accountability through the experience. I have found that Bills fans forgive a lot if a player is working his tail off trying to improve and help the team, even if the talent just is not there. Look at all the apologist for Peterman - I mean his performances were so epic-bad that news outlets were setting the way-back machine to try to find QBs in leather helmets that had worse showings, but he was a guy who was trying his hardest. On the other hand Bills fans will roast mercilessly players who cannot "man-up" and be accountable for taking care of their own business.

Teller actually gets "push" when he plays with technique, and that is what we need from our center and guard positions - our RT position just has to be able to take away that outside speed rush and clip after clip I watch it is not getting done. I read some of the comments that reference Parcell's thoughts on the Guard position - not sure if I agree about it being the easiest to fill, perhaps the easiest to hide poor play, but the truth will out. A solid guard will power your run game by moving bodies (backwards hopefully), he will hold his own in pass-pro and pick up the odd blitz up the middle, he also shores up the tackle and center spots if uncovered and they need support. Guards are also (generally - as I know there are a few exceptions) the only linemen that are asked to pull. Good guards are like the glue for your line. Obviously, the center handles the ball every snap so he has a huge responsibility in the exchange, but the next biggest asset is the ability to anchor and not get pushed back into the pocket in pass-pro and to use leverage when called upon to create the right running seams - often the center calls out the protections. We all know what we need from the tackle position - usually your best pass-pro lineman is on the left protecting the blind side, but the right tackle is expected to be able to move people and needs to be pretty good in pass-pro too. Many defensive coordinators now-a-days will line up their best pass rusher on the right side from time to time to get that pressure in the face of the QB. Teller can be that Guard we need on the left, I am still not sold on our Center (although I think he is a passable depth player) and I have not been impressed at all with our right side - although I think those guys are working their tails off.... I just don't know if the natural talent and strength are there. I feel bad saying that, but sometimes the talent is either there or not.
