How long to close the competitive gap?
NoHuddleKelly12 replied to Ga boy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I’m not so sure the fans on this board anyway would be ok with only incremental progress—most comments for the thread that asked this very question expect significant steps forward this coming season: -

Thanks Hap, great post! Showing why both sides have merit in this discussion. This is even in the running for "of the day" consideration--I'll let you know how it turns out! -
Yeah man! I got your Christmas package too, so thoughtful! We wish.

O Line and Special Teams Coaches Hiring Wait

^^^^^This. Post of the day @Augie ? Definitely I am more intrigued by our hiring prospects of those coaches still in the playoffs versus the also-ran squads, so I’m good still with the timing. -

Maybe I was reading too much Sully analysis of MW’s lack of mental fortitude back in those days? And you’re right, I’d forgotten his first couple years he put up very solid #s, but how he left with awful effort his last few here, discount against the value of his overall historically high K, and the fact that he didn’t help get us over the drought hump, all combine to make him as forgettable as anybody else we’ve left behind in previous drought regimes, fair or not that may be. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/after-further-review-heres-the-proof-that-mario-williams-quit-on-the-bills/amp/ Nah Augie, you hold that line! Was not a bad example, imho. -

Mario Williams deserves his entire own thread in this discussion, but I’d be curious what the consensus is concerning his production versus contract value over time. I don’t recall being impressed, sorry ? -

I’m guessing untenable long term cap squeezes, a la Doug Whaley management style? -

A lot of valid points teef. However, I really don’t understand what it means to “move on from the Super Bowl days.” As a Bills fan I’ll always be proud of that era and its players. How is that a negative? Again, I’m not saying use the same playbook. I am saying I expect my franchise to show me they are trying to get back to our earlier glory and then some. That should be the standard. -

I do. You don’t think young Hoodie would’ve been able to adjust his D accordingly? Thanks for the admission. I’ve never met him or his family, so you have me at a disadvantage sir! And then you can safely leave Jim out of this discussion, right? ? -

Sure it’s a different era. But his takes are informed by an actual knowledge base that most posters here would lack. I’d like to think however, that most people who appreciate our alums are also sophisticated enough to understand the difference between a current FO employee and someone just offering up an opinion, even if that someone happens to be an NFL vet. I don’t read anything more into Reed’s take than that he has a certain level of frustration and he happened to air it publicly this time. He’s human like anyone else who maybe should’ve taken a breath before pressing “send.” No need to bash him for it personally however. He’s earned at least that much respect from all of us here, no? -

McD has gone out of his way several times to include 90’s alums in practice speeches, has had dinners with them to pick their brains, and all around has praised them umpteen times for what they’ve done for the Bills. That’s been reciprocated by many of the albums as well about the current coaching staff. What’s the problem here exactly? -

Since when does appreciating the past equate to “living” in it? Sure I’d love to have my teen years back from the 90’s too, but I’m doing just fine in my 40’s now, thank you very much. Tradition, appreciation and expecting a certain level of competency based on previously hit high water marks? What’s wrong with that? -

Yes, we agree. However, it is what it is, and what it is is still mighty special in my book, regardless of the last game. No one can take that away from us. How we got to each of those SB’s was awesome each time. -

Nothing much surprises me anymore on social media, including TBD. But yes, a new low. -

Many would argue that getting off the mat each time to come back is no small feat in and of itself. Not even the GOAT has ever won 4 straight AFC crowns, or even 3 for that matter. That’s a tough spine that basically all of our teams since that generation could only hope to emulate and never even came close. Once this franchise gives us more than the 90’s, I’ll be the first to change my avatar, promise! I love JA, go back to my posts gushing about the kid, and am solidly on team McD bro, no one can say otherwise. But to just throw away our past that we can justifiably take pride in? Never.
